Ingredient spotlight: Retinol VS. Bakuchiol As I count down to 30 and my average sleep per night goes down because #momlife , aging is on my mind more and more often. It’s no secret that Retinol is considered one of the most popular ingredients on the market for anti-aging. Chances are, if you’ve been to the dermatologist it’s been mentioned for a host of reasons. So what’s the deal? - Retinol enhances collagen and elastin production. - Why is it considered unsafe? It’s most common adverse effects are skin irritation and sun sensitivity. On the EWG skin deep database, retinol and it’s derivatives scored 9 out of 10 on the hazard scale. It isn’t recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Due to photochemical instability, sunscreen is required while using and you need to avoid using it during the daytime. Too much retinol can be harmful. Usage should not exceed 0.1% due to it’s potential for skin sensitivity. *It was an early addition to the Beautycounter never list.* - So what can we use instead? Bakuchiol. In 2014 the International Journal of Cosmetic Science published a clinical study of retinol vs. bakuchiol. This study concluded that bakuchiol mimics and sometimes exceeds the performance benefits of retinol. - So is bakuchiol safe? Bakuchiol is rated a 1 out of 10 on the skin deep data base. It is considered safe; even for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s also non-irritating. - Last year Beautycounter released the Countertime line, which features their groundbreaking “retinatural complex”.
