Spent the day updating the letter fills on our “Greetings From Richmond” mural with @thenightowl. After almost a month of constant attacks by an occupying army, it seemed relevant to do our part to document OUR city, and the way it’s chosen to treat us the last few weeks. It has been nearly a month since our illustrious police force scared themselves with their own truck full of more police and tear gassed a crowd of citizens. Since then, they’ve managed to attack, arrest and maim countless citizens, still with zero accountability. The absolute least we can do is create this mural to show solidarity with all the people in the streets, night after night, fighting for a better world. Undying support for @charmschoolrva for allowing us to adjust this, it’s rare to find businesses that take a hard stand for anything these days, and these guys deserve our unending support for standing with the people, since day 1. We’re absolutely honored to document the struggle of so many people, both in our city and across the country. Keep fighting, and donate to your local mutual aid and bail funds. Our fall 2020 call for art application is now open for our Massachusetts-based artist wall on Peabody Street in el Punto neighborhood in Salem. This years call is unique as we want provoke deeper conversations with artists and provide a platform to express the constant quest for freedom that individuals and communities of color have and continue to pursue in this country. Because of the work of North Shore CDC, we understand that we have a responsibility when it comes to the art we bring into the community. It must educate the community and its visitors about social justice, instill neighborhood pride, and bring about awareness of existing socio-economic barriers. Inspired by the African American singer, songwriter and civil rights activist Nina Simone’s song, “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free,” the Punto Urban Art Museum (PUAM) calls upon all Massachusetts-based artists to partake in the paid opportunity to use their creativity, communication, and advocacy to develop an interpretation of the lyrics and ideas written by jazz legend Billy Taylor and Dick Dallas, of what it means to be free. The curation of 20 murals will be accompanied by seven (7) panels dedicated to selected verses from the song and relevant educational information both in Spanish and English. We believe that the visual combination of art and educational content will create a tangible and impactful experience for the contributing artists, the community, and outside visitors to the open air museum. Twenty creatives will be selected and each person will earn $1,000. Artists are encouraged to interpret the song, pay homage to the singer, songwriters, or the historical context of the Civil Rights Movement, or can use this opportunity to share their our journey of what it means to be free living in the United States. Art is a powerful form of communication. Dont miss this opportunity to impact the community through your art. Established in 1860 and incorporated in 1885. The complex stretched along 5th Street between Grand, Clinton, and Willow. ✏ The company was famous for their Venus Pencil. A pencil that was made in 17 different degrees, from the very softest to the very hardest degree. The company even changed their name to Venus Pen & Pencil Company in 1956. ✏ In 1963, operations in Hoboken were coming to a halt. Antiquated buildings, taxes and old machinery were all factors to the companys relocation. 600-700 union textile workers (77a) were made aware of the change and efforts were made to keep operations in Hoboken. ✏ The efforts were fruitless, and later that year the company moved out of Hoboken. Almost immediately, the complex was demolished to make room for residential towers, known as Church Towers. Muralist @tanyapixart on her recently completed mural Lions Gate It is my intention that this reference will create stylistic dialogue with other Art Deco design and architectural features in the city. The composition includes two cat-like sentinels and the suggestion of arches or doorways, water and tree or plant-like forms These ideas are stylized to meet the design parameters proposed by the client. The work’s title alludes to the alignment between the Earth and the star Sirius, that occurs in August (at the time of painting), which has been observed since the times of ancient Egypt. This cosmological positioning is honoured as a time of increased energetic activation and connection between the physical and spiritual realms. The design includes a numerological code that signifies this important time on the planet. The symbolic language of the piece references consciousness and the movement of internal energy.
