I was diagnosed in Aug 2016 with Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I went through sixteen rounds of chemotherapy, had a double mastectomy and 21 lymph nodes removed from under my arm. I was stage three. I was in remission for approximately a little over a year when I was told that it had returned. I am currently in the fight again. I have completed fourteen rounds of chemotherapy, multiple surgeries and now radiation. This journey was one I thought I would never be on. Cancer happens to other people, not me right? Wrong! Not going to lie, the diagnosis scared me at first but once I got through the initial fear, I realized that I am about to enter the fight for my life. So I fight. I am winning and I will continue to beat this nasty disease. No matter what I face, I realize that God goes before me and He is paving the way to my victory. My family and my faith filled friends have kept me in this fight. My pain is not for me, but to inspire someone else to remain in the fight. In some ways I am thankful that I have had this experience because I see beauty wherever I go. I refuse to allow unnecessary drama in my life anymore. Life is precious and I no longer take it for granted. I live my life everyday with purpose in mind. The scars I have are reminders of how I have continued to kick cancer’s tail and will continue to kick cancer’s tail. I want to be the miracle – the beacon of hope for others to see so they will kick cancer’s tail. I refuse to stop living. I live my life I believe more so now than I did before. Never stop! This is what being completely vulnerable looks like for me. . . I remember the moment the doctor told me I had breast cancer I still remember his face perfectly like it just happened, it is burned into my brain. . . Breast cancer? Me? At 31? I thought he had made a mistake I prayed that he was wrong that something went wrong and it wasn’t true it couldn’t be true I am so healthy and so young. I remember one of the first thoughts I had was about my hair I was terrified to lose it I told myself I would never show my head! . . Here I am almost six month later. . . I am here battling day and night and Iv learned that it’s not true what they say, it’s not each day that is a gift it is each moment and each breath it is each hug and each smile it is the sound of your children’s little voices and giggles it is each hand held and step taken it is feeling the sun on your face and smelling the crisp fall air . Iv battles through nights that I have begged god to take away the pain and let me see another day. . Iv learned to be vulnerable Iv learned to never take any moment or person for granted Iv learned to appreciate the smallest of things. My cottage is a place that has made me especially happy these past few months. I feel that throughout my normal work week I spend so much time worrying about getting my brows and makeup perfect and ensuring that my headscarf or wig looks just right that by the time I get to the weekend I am so excited to go to the cottage where I rarely wear a wig and have even been leaving the makeup at home lately! At the cottage I feel that I am in my own world and I have the space to just be free and embrace my natural beauty! I have alopecia. Alopecia actually just means hair loss. There are lots of different types (androgenetic alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, telogen effluvium, etc). Too many to list here! I started out with alopecia areata which was patches of hair loss. This is a type where the immune system, for whatever reason, starts to see the hair follicle as a threat & starts to attack it. The immune system cells kind of swarms around the hair follicle preventing the hair from growing. I progressed on from just the patches and lost everything, my hair, my eyebrows, eyelashes, body hair. At this point it was then called alopecia (areata) universalis. Total loss of all hair everywhere. As Im currently sporting half an eyebrow and 90% of my eyelashes Im probably somewhere between alopecia universalis and alopecia (areata) totalis (which is total loss of hair from one area). . My hair loss started as two 10p size patches in May 1995 (age 11). One on each side of my head. They gradually grew over a period of about 6 months. I lost maybe 40/50% of my hair and then they started to fill in. I seem to remember having good regrowth by the January and being able to wear a pony tail again! The following May (1996) it started to fall out pretty rapidly and I lost about 80% over a two week period, the rest followed not long after. I didnt have it for a while and then it started to grow back. By the year 2000 (age 16) I had probably 95% of it back. This continued to fill in over the next few years. But then at the end of 2003 the patches started again. I lost maybe 30/40% over a few months but AGAIN (!) they started to fill in. And AGAIN, a few months later it all came out pretty rapidly over the course of a couple of weeks (age 20). Since then Ive had it try to grow back a few times but nothing more than a small patch of hair. I did have one eyebrow (just the one!) grow back for about five years which is the period of time that this photo was taken! . Shaving my hair is a very liberating experience for me. It is a way to distance myself from sexist and racist beauty standards in order to express my real self and my own beauty. I believe that we have to deconstruct the idea that femininity is about long straight hair. Instead, let’s normalize different haircuts and hair types !
