I want to say something about creating and having a ‘good’ relationship with being defeated. I want to say that I’ve found a magic spell that prys me from the jaws of the self critic. I want to say that there’s a place after years of writing, you can just not care about capturing something less than. There isn’t. And it’s hard. But it’s a choice. It’s my choice. I’m held accountable to my truth and what I feel is important in life, so I soak up every moment as bitter or sweet as it comes. No excuse. And everyday I end up in this bath, pulling my eyelids down and ruining the photo, I try to remember it’s all part of the process. I choose to honour the magic of song. Trying to capture some moment or way of saying something, that transcends our human experience. The way music has done that my whole life. ‘Trick of the Light’ is about portraying an idea of success but really hiding behind the walls of an illusive highlight real.
