This morning was heartbreaking... It’s been so long since we were in a regular schedule of them leaving me and I am shattered 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Our biggest COVID blessing was the time spent together, growing, playing, chatting and not a care in the world about time... I feel like this blessing was removed after a month of stress and struggle over this whole stupid school thing (it will be normal, no it won’t, no masks, masks, social distancing, no social distancing, HUB, no HUB but more changes...). It has been a weird time to be alive but with the school stuff, an incredibly difficult time to be a parent... I hate that the last month of this most beautiful time with these two was spent worried and stressed about making the ‘right’ decision (whatever that means 😫) but I’m hanging on to the hope that it will be ok for them... maybe even good. To all the parents who have been some version of myself over the past month, hang tight... this blows but our kids will have many struggles through their lives and this (if they have been lucky) is just the first. Don’t hide your tears mamas! Show them how much they mean to you but add words of love and encouragement, not fear. It’s the end of a loooong working week that spilled over into last weekend too, so to say I’m ready for this weekend is an understatement! This little boy went back to school in person today, and loved every minute of it. He has missed school more than anyone in our house, and he looked visibly relieved to march off into a classroom with a teacher. We miss our schools and friends in NYC a lot (understatement!), but feel extremely lucky to have found a warm, nurturing and safe spot for this guy here in the suburbs, with just three other sweet kiddos and the kindest teacher. BACK TO SCHOOL PART 1 OF 2 Started off with the news I was going back to school for two days before the summer holidays started. I had to repack my @allergy.lifestyle bag to suit the new school set up @anaphylaxis_campaign had written a great letter about the ability to use an epipen in schools when social distancing is in place (I suggest you give it a read if you haven’t already!). Usually I do count my school as particularly safe with regards to my allergies. I have a great and careful friend group, nuts aren’t used in the canteen and my teachers are aware. I do feel the need to up my caution due to the two meter rule, I knew via a consent form we had to fill in before going in that I had gave them permission to use the epipen should it be necessary but as usual I would do anything to prevent that happening. It’s been 184 days since we were in school. Sophia is in 4th grade with my 4th grade teacher from 18 years go and Wyatt is in 1st grade. We were all very excited to return today. It has been a busy week. We are still in temporary accommodation and we have been trying to find our bearings and get things set up. ⠀ It always takes a while when moving to a new country to get things sorted like housing, cars and now school enrollment! ⠀ ⠀ However, once everything is in place, a routine can be established and there is a lot more time to enjoy our new surroundings. ⠀ ⠀ There is little to no cases here in Northern Japan 🇯🇵 and the pandemic has not affected this region the way it has other places. 🍎✏️Today is the first day of 18th grade for me! My To-Do List: Fresh set of auto injectors, plenty of safe snacks for inbetween classes, and speak up for myself! In graduate school, my class sizes are much smaller and my class periods are much longer, so I spend a lot of the work week surrounded by my classmates’ meals. Nervous in the close quarters but hesitant to speak up as a new student, I often suffered in silence if a peer pulled out an unsafe snack. Reminding myself to take my own advice, I slowly gained the confidence throughout last school year to stand up for myself in those situations. My allergies should never compromise my education in the classroom, and glancing over my shoulder every time someone pulls out a snack isn’t teaching me clinical psychology. A benefit of the pandemic - I am safe in my ‘virtual classroom’ from any allergens. But as we return to in-person learning, we cannot forget our self advocacy skills. To all my fellow college students who no longer rely on their parents to advocate for them at school, remember that your health and safety is never an inconvenience. Montana is grappling with a COVID spike. Since the pandemic began, we have never faced numbers like this. A staggering 333 new cases were reported in Montana today. Over the past week, there have been an average of 221 new cases per day, an increase of 97 percent from the average two weeks prior. According to Stacey Anderson, lead epidemiologist at the Department of Public Health and Human Services, last week saw a 90% increase over the prior week in the number of cases among school-age children. The number of schools with COVID cases rose to 121, from 58 last week. Gallatin County has the second highest total number of cases in Montana behind Yellowstone County. Much of the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Montana comes from six counties — Deer Lodge, Flathead, Missoula, Roosevelt, Rosebud and Yellowstone. Our Tribal communities are also experiencing tragic spikes. New restrictions have been put in place by The Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council - a weekend lockdown from Friday to Monday to attempt to slow the spread of the virus. Old Bills may have taken over our feed the past couple of months, but behind the scenes, our work with the Community Emergency Response Fund hasnt skipped a beat. In late August, the Community Emergency Response Fund made a lead gift of $400,000 to @fund_for_public_education to ensure that Teton County Schools could purchase critical supplies needed to keep our students, teachers, and administrators safe this school year. The Community Emergency Response Fund is addressing community needs in coordination with local front line agencies. Since launching in mid-March, the Emergency Response Fund has granted a total of more than $2.9 million dollars to more than 40 local organizations. Relief funds are being disbursed daily to nonprofits, as the Community Foundation receives requests for assistance. 💗1st day of IN-PERSON Kinder • this sweet girl has gone through a lot of change already this school year.. starting elementary school, new classmates, new teacher, new rules, virtual learning, and now a hybrid model schooling where she will be in-person learning 2 days a week on campus. Already my Kindergartener is learning a lot.. sight words, writing, reading, addition, and adapting. • To be honest, not a day goes by that I do not question our decision to educate her in these unconventional times through our local public school system. But I am 100% certain that Aspen is strong, smart, social, confident, kind, compassionate, and if her needs + our wishes are not being met, then we can always pivot.
