🔸Lobo gargantilla o nutria gigante (Pteronura brasiliensis) Inconfundible por su gran tamaño. Presenta irregulares y contrastantes manchas amarillentas o blancas en la garganta, que se extienden por la región ventral. Con notables vibrisas faciales y pelos que cubren el rinario. Sus ojos se movilizan fuera de las orbitas, confiriéndole aspecto inexpresivo. 🔸HÁBITAT Grandes ríos, arroyos, lagunas y esteros permanentes de regiones tropicales y subtropicales, mayormente enmarcados por selvas o bosques en galería. La prescencia de buena sombra y sustrato alto y relativamente seco parecen ser funciones importantes para el hábitat de esta especie. En Argentina originalmente se extendia por toda la cuenca del plata, exceptuando las zonas desérticas y australes. 🔸HÁBITOS Se mueven en grupos de 6-10 individuos, conformados por una pareja e hijos de una o mas generaciones. Los peces con los que se alimenta son cazados con cierta facilidad gracias a sus bigotes que le sirven para detectar a sus presas, a las membranas interdigitales que le permiten un nado veloz y a la forma aerodinámica de su cuerpo largo y achatado, así como a su cola que le sirve de remo y timón. Las hembras son las lideres que dirigen todas las actividades. Las crias a las 3 semanas de vida son colocadas en el agua, aun cuando no abrieron los ojos. El resto de los integrantes colabora con la crianza y defensa de los cachorros. La madurez sexual la alcanzan recién a los 2 años de vida, momento en el que abandonan el grupo naturalmente. 🔸CONSERVACIÓN La especie ha sufrido fuerte presión de caza comercial durante el presente siglo, en toda sudamerica. Hoy su hábitat esta siendo modificado por el avance de la frontera agrícola, lo que provoca alteraciones en los regímenes hidrológicos, en buena parte de las cuencas del Amazonas y el Orinoco. En Argentina las razones de su desaparición no están claras, parece probable que la ocupación y disturbio de los principales cursos de agua, la abundancia de perros, la sobrepesca y la caza, hayan sido los mayores influyentes. Es #viernesdeilustracion y en esta ocasión el tema es animales en peligro y escogí hablar de nutrias por que of course. Also thanks to @crayola_mx !! :D Por años a lucha por territorio, cambios en el ambiente y caza han puestos a las nutrias marinas y nutrias gigantes de rio en peligro de extinción, pero un nuevo problema ha surgido en los últimos años, la captura ilegal para el mercado de mascotas, es especial de la nutria enana asiática. Esta especie se ha vuelto popular en los últimos años gracias al Internet, lo que ha aumentado su demanda como mascota, las nutrias enanas son animales con fuertes lazos sociales y forman familias que duran toda la vida, por lo que la captura de los cachorros no solamente implica romper estos lazos pero herir a los otros miembros del grupo, si no que afectar gravemente el desarrollo de las crías, las cuales en la mayoría de las ocasiones no solamente terminan en ambientes que jamas podrán sustituir su habitad natural pero en manos de gente que sin los conocimientos o recursos para mantenerlas correctamente. Si bien este problema aun no es tan grande como el que sufren sus primos mayores, es precisamente por eso por que decidí hablar sobre el, por que aun estamos a tiempo de hacer algo antes de que el problema se vuelva mas grande. Here’s an otterly awesome story for Sea Otter Awareness Week! In 2017 our Wildlife Response team rescued a sea otter not once but twice, the first time with a hook stuck in his flipper and a second time with a hook stuck in his mouth. He was successfully treated and released back to the ocean with flipper tags so if he was ever spotted again he could be identified. Just this past week he was seen swimming in the bay here in Seward! From the looks of this photo he is staying healthy and hook free! Todays #SeaOtterAwarenessWeek spotlight is Chloe! Nicknamed The Laid Back One, Chloe is an independent otter who likes to do her own thing. At seven years old, her dark fur is starting to turn gray. Her favorite thing to do is groom herself on a pile of ice underneath the skylight inside her habitat. Sea otters have the densest fur of any animal on the planet. In just one square inch, a sea otter has 800,000 to one million hairs, more than enough to cover an entire adult dog or cat. This lush coat makes grooming a vital and an almost constant activity. The animals are very limber and their skeletons are loosely jointed, meaning they can easily reach and groom every single part of their bodies. Insta-famous otters are fueling an otter craze in Japan. Both Asian small-clawed and smooth-coated otters have experienced dramatic declines in recent years, likely due to the demand for otters as pets in the country. A snowball effect of the increasing popularity of “otter cafes” and viral otter videos on social media continues to further fuel the obsession with pet otters. But some good news might be on the horizon for smooth-coated otters. Today they were uplisted to Appendix I – the strictest of protection under CITES (pending confirmation at the end of this week). This will effectively end all international trade and hopefully give them a chance to recover. We’re still waiting on news for the Asian small-clawed otter. Indonesia, opposing this listing, has opted to meet with the Parties who proposed the listing (India, Nepal, and the Philippines) and will resume discussions tomorrow. ¿Sabés que es la lista roja de la UICN? Es un inventario mundial elaborado por científicos convocados por la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, donde se establece el estado de conservación de las distintas especies del planeta y cuales están en peligro o no de extinción. En el 2019, la UICN pudo evaluar 105.732 especies, 12.155 más que el año pasado, y el resultado fue que 28.338 especies están amenazadas. 873 ya están extintas, 73 también lo están en su estado salvaje y solo sobreviven en cautiverio. Por otro lado, 6127 especies están en peligro crítico, 9.754 en peligro, 12.457 en estado vulnerable y 6.435 como casi amenazadas. Entre estas especies en Argentina se encuentran: el Huillín, en grave peligro de extinción, el Cóndor Andino, la Ballena Franca Austral, con sólo 10 mil ejemplares aproximadamente en los océanos. El guanaco, que ha pérdido el 58% de sus poblaciones en la última década. El Pingüino de Magallanes y el Zorro Colorado Patagónico, que aunque todavía no están cerca de extinguirse de seguir reduciendo sus hábitats podrían estarlo. Todos ellos son importantes habitantes de Península Mitre. La naturaleza está disminuyendo a un ritmo sin precedentes en la historia humana, pero aún así pareciera que los estados todavía no reconocen la urgencia para tratar esta crisis, y menos aún son conscientes del trabajo en conjunto que deberían estar haciendo. Sólo el humano reconoce límites en la naturaleza. La protección y conservación de áreas naturales debe ser un esfuerzo internacional, para que se puedan respetar los corredores biológicos que muchas especies necesitan para su alimentación y reproducción. La respuesta para esta crisis, donde una de cada cinco especies se encuentra en peligro de extinción, está al alcance de nuestras manos: debemos cambiar la manera en que nos relacionamos con el mundo natural. A vida insiste em dar sinais de resiliência, sorte a nossa! Enquanto navegávamos pelas áreas queimadas do Parque Estadual Encontro das Águas, no Porto Jofre, encontramos uma família de ariranhas saudáveis, sem queimaduras, aproveitando o sol deitadas em um tronco nas margens do Rio São Lourenço. Ficamos alguns minutos ao lado delas, só assistindo essas cenas lindas. Após 10 minutos com essa família, deixamos elas em paz e seguimos rio acima documentando as áreas queimadas. NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. Sea otters dont need sunglasses...🕶️ If youre curious as to why, for our 3rd day of #SeaotterAwarenessWeek and 7 days of #SeaOtterSavvy, be sure to check Dr. Sarah McKay Strobels most recent blog that explores some of her sensory research focused on sea otter vision. Wondering whether sea otters have developed specialised visual adaptations to assist them in navigating to and from their underwater and surface environments, Sarah and her colleagues sought to explore more about sea otter eyes. They found that the retina is similar to other nocturnal mammals, having lots of light sensitive cells, and that sea otters have a well-developed tapetum lacidum (what creates that eyeshine at night) at the back of the eye. Combined, this indicates that sea otter eyes may be sensitive enough to see well in both bright and low light (at the surface and underwater) - making the need for sunglasses unnecessary for our furry neighbors. Its Sea Otter Awareness Week! Do you know about the incredible survival story of our endangered Californian sea otters? By the 1930s, most people believed that this subspecies of sea otter had vanished, wiped out by fur traders who coveted its rich pelt. But somehow, a raft of about 50 sea otters survived! 💪 They were tucked away along the remote Big Sur coast, sheltering in a cove at Bixby Creek. In the early 1900s, residents and prospectors began to report sightings of strange, weasel-like animals floating offshore on their backs, including off the Point Sur Lighthouse in Big Sur in 1914. Then, in the 1930s, as State Route 1 was being built, the raft of survivors was officially “discovered,” and the world realized that California, or southern, sea otters weren’t extinct. #DidYouKnow: Sea otters were abundant along the California shoreline, and their presence helped healthy kelp forests thrive. In the early 20th century, however, fur hunters pushed sea otters to the brink of extinction. Sea otter hunting was officially banned in 1911, but there was little hope of recovery at the time. Then, in 1938, people discovered a small population of sea otters off the Big Sur coast just south of Monterey. Since then, sea otters have made a modest comeback thanks to their protection, aided by the recovery and surrogacy work we have been doing at the Aquarium for the last 30 years. Already, we’re seeing encouraging otter population increases in nearby Elkhorn Slough and other coastal wetlands. Our oceans wellbeing depends on keeping it healthy and resilient in a rapidly changing world. Their eyes and ears are small, the tail is flattened, limbs are short, strong, and the front and back paws are large and webbed. T H E I S S U ES: Threats to Asian otter population are loss of wetland habitats due to construction of hydroelectric projects, conversion of wetlands for developments and agriculture, reduction in fish availability, poaching and contamination of waterways by pesticides. The pet trade is a newer threat to these adorable otters, and social media has driven the demand. Researchers believe they are being stolen from the wild in Indonesia, Thailand, and other countries in Southeast Asia to sell them as pets locally and in Japan. SOLUTIONS: The Singapore River clean-up was first established in 1987 with a goal to raise awareness of the negative effects of dumping waste into Singapores waterways. The programme continues today, to keep encouraging people to keep the waterways clean. Previously administered by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC). Current education programmes aimed at keeping the countrys waterways clean are managed by the Waterways Watch Society (WWS), a local non-profit, non-governmental organization. To protect animals from the pet trade, most Southeast Asian countries have enacted laws banning their capture, sale, possession, and transport. In 2019, CITES Conference voted to list the Asian Small-Clawed otter and the Smooth-Coated Otter on Appendix I, effectively banning international commercial trade of both species.
