PART 2 of @essexheritage Wildlife Wednesday is here! In our first picture, see the baby swallows that were born on the porch of the Bakers Island Light Lighthouse Keepers’ house this summer. While very cute, the porch was not an ideal home for the swallows. Swipe to the last picture to see the all-new neighborhood of bird houses for swallows, installed by the keepers for next seasons’ birds. In the middle two pictures, you can see the eggs and newborn chick of a Herring Gull. Herring Gulls are common members of Bakers’ Island’s #wildlife community. Glue traps are one of the cruelest methods of rodent control. These traps cause prolonged suffering as frantic animals attempt to escape. Death can take days! The sad truth....Without exception, every person who has rushed to our clinic with an animal stuck in a glue trap has expressed deep regret. Each person says that, had they known how intensely the trapped animal would suffer, no matter how despised that animal may be, they never would have used the product. You can add “wildlife search and rescue” to our resume – mama and daddy bird decided to build a nest in the eaves of our building. Two of their babies fell in between our interior and exterior walls. We had to cut a portion of our exterior wall to retrieve these precious little birdies.
