All four subspecies of gorillas are endangered or critically endangered, but we can all help gorillas no matter where we live in the world. 1) Dont buy a new cell phone every time a new model comes out. Skipping generations of cell phones can help gorillas. Illegal mining of coltan ore is partly responsible for the plummeting number of eastern lowland gorillas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. If you must have a new one, make sure you at least recycle the old one to reduce demand for coltan. 2) Check for the FSC logo on timber and paper products. Timber companies encourage trade in bushmeat by cutting roads into into remote forests, providing access for commercial hunters. 3) Donate to the @savinggorillas , the largest and longest-running organization fully dedicated to gorilla conservation. And be sure to follow them on social media. 4) Learn about the threats to gorillas and share with your family and friends. The loss of her mother and the burns on her hand when she arrived at OFI told of her tragic past. 😞 Without being sure of what happened, it appears Holland was captured, and her mother killed in a fire. Since arriving to the Care Centre as an orphan, she has found a loving surrogate mother in Ibu Yeti, who cares for little Holland as if she were her own child. 💗 Precious Holland has soulful eyes and a quiet charm that wins everyone over, shes always focused on the present and living in the moment. She has an adventurous streak and finds new wonder in familiar places... Inspecting every nook and cranny, sniffing each leaf and leaving no stone unturned. An orangutan rescue team that I have had the pleasure of working with in South Aceh, Sumatra, is struggling to reach orangutans in need because its vehicle keeps breaking down. The @orangutaninformationcentre Human Orangutan Conflict Response Unit (HOCRU) works on the frontline of orangutan protection in Sumatra, evacuating orangutans from condemned forests that are being torn down by bulldozers, or orangutans that are crop raiding. Trapped in tiny patches of forest surrounded by farmlands, cut off from viable areas of habitat, orangutans may resort to raiding crops for survival. For smallholder farmers, this can seriously threaten their livelihoods, and their retaliation can be fatal. So far this team has rescued over 200 orangutans and released them to the wild in safe areas. Drill Monkey, eye contact #portrait. While tracking drill monkeys through the rainforest of West Africa, @justindavidjay and I encountered a very big group, maybe around 50 individuals. Drills are very secretive, if you are fortunate to find them in the forest they will disappear as fast as they can. So, this was a very unusual occasion. Drills can tell when you are a human “female” or a human “male”. And if you are a male, they don’t like to be looked at directly. In drill society making eye contact means some kind of challenge, specially between males. Females, on the other hand, are considered no threat. I was lucky I could watch them get along with their secret forest life and exchange some very special looks. . . Mono Drill, contacto visual #retrato.
