Show reptiles 🐍🐢 some love ❤️ by adopting some of the more shy, cryptic, and lesser-known species. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As the number of adopted species or our campaign “adopt a reptile” approaches 100, we see that the majority of adoptions have gone towards the more charismatic, colorful reptiles such as the Pinocchio Anole (Anolis proboscis) and the Andean Forest-Pitviper (Bothrops pulcher) 🐍, whereas the more timid, cryptic species remain without a “parent” or “guardian.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Today, you can symbolically adopt (link in BIO) some of these more “introvert” species because they also deserve some love ❤️. We are in the calm before the kiwi storm, kiwi across the country are beginning to sit on their eggs doing their best to stay safe from introduced pests and predators. Soon those eggs will be collected from the wild then where they will be incubated, hatched and raised before being released to new pest and predator free homes (like @sanctuary_mountain with this kiwi now lives). For some kiwi it will be their forever home for others it will be just until they are over 1 kg in weight and big enough and stroppy enough to fight off some of the our introduced pests. 📸care of the uber talented @tara.swanphoto #Kiwisforkiwi #Kiwi #KiwiConservation #Conservation #nocturnal #Aotearoa #Maungatautari #kōhanga #EndangeredSpecies #Aotearoa #nutsaboutbirds #birdsofinstagram #birds_adored #bird_brilliance #purenewzealand #kiwipics #birds_captures #birdshots #bestbirdshots #wildlife #nature #birdselite #birdsonearth #birdsnature - @kiwisforkiwi on Instagram

As we come into spring our rescue service is going to become busier and busier. The female flying foxes are getting to the later stages of their pregnancies and are going to start getting into trouble as they try to find enough food to feed themselves and their baby. We thought it would be a good idea to do a ‘Wildlife Friendly Gardens’ series. So over the next 6 weeks we will be doing a post on a way you can make your property safer for not only bats, but all of our native wildlife. Our first post is a 2 part post on our pets and how we can care for them more responsibly. We would like to start by saying that we love our pets, most of our rehabilitators and rescuers have pet cats and dogs. This is not an anti pet post, we just want to have a discussion. This first part is on dogs. Dog attacks are one of our most common reasons for flying fox rescue and the survival for these flying foxes is incredibly low. Now these are not mean or aggressive dogs, they are lovely family dogs doing what comes naturally to them. It’s our responsibility to ensure they don’t have the opportunity to hurt wildlife. The easiest and most effective solution is to let your dog sleep inside the house at night. This is becoming more and more common and is by far the best way to make your garden safe for nocturnal wildlife. The second way is to secure your dog in an internal yard or smaller fenced area during the night so they have less access to your garden. This is less effective but at least leaves a safe corridor for wildlife to move through your property. Dogs are lovely pets but they can be devastating for local wildlife if not kept responsibly. Additionally, dogs are one of the main reasons for koala fatalities which predominantly occur at night. So keeping your dogs in at night not only helps bats, but koalas as well! Photos by the amazing @wingspawsnclaws of Stella and Luna. Stella and Luna were grabbed by a dog and Stella was injured trying to protect her baby Luna. Thankfully this pair beat the statistics with Stella sustaining very serious but viable injuries from the dog. This mumma did such an amazing job protecting her baby that Luna came off unscathed. - @bat.conservation.rescue.qld on Instagram

“30,000 people used to come to the Duke Lemur Center every year and now theres nobody. The animals really dont care. The animals are doing just fine. Theyre doing far better than all of us, I would say. As much as we would like to say that they miss people terribly and wish they could come back, thats all for us. On March 12 or so, a radio message was sent out to everyone in the Center saying everybody must be wearing a mask. I was just about to give a tour. And I was like, ‘Alright, were gonna put on these masks.’ That was the longest tour Ive ever given in my life because I knew we were canceling the rest of the month, and then who knows what would happen. I told them, ‘I dont know the next time Im going to do this, so youre going to hear everything I possibly know about lemurs over the next two hours.’ Us educators are very much missing people, missing having that community, that connection. We switched gears really quickly and became animal technician assistants, a position thats normally filled by volunteers. So now I come in at 6:30 in the morning, get the lemur’s breakfasts put together, and then help the animal keepers throughout the day with whatever they need to do. On that first day, though, I think I shocked the technicians. We are all sitting at lunch and I said, ‘You guys, I think Im afraid of lemurs.’ I had never really been in a room with the lemurs. As an educator, I stay on my side of the fence and talk to people. The technicians looked at me and just stayed dead silent. It’s that I’m afraid the lemurs will try to get out. There are multiple doors so its not actually a concern, but it would be really embarrassing to have to radio the technicians and say that a lemur escaped. Over the last few months though, I think we’ve reached an understanding.” - Anna, Educator at the Duke Lemur Center #whowearenow2020 #lemur - @whowearenow2020 on Instagram

Did you know that bats are a European Protected Species? This is due to their historic decline and vulnerability across Europe and means they are given legal protection that covers individual bats and their roosts! . . . . BCTs Investigations Project has been running for over 15 years, focusing on supporting members of the public, bat ecologists and the police during investigations into bat crime and providing information to prosecutors where cases are taken to court. Despite the conclusion of funding, we remain committed to both Bat Crime Investigations and Conservation Wildlife Crime and continue to seek ongoing funding to support this work. . . . . Through the project, it has become clear that crime against bats most commonly involves roost destruction and disturbance, to which bats are particularly vulnerable. Follow the link in our bio to read more about BCTs Bat Crime work and to find out what you should do if you think a bat related crime is happening. . . . . 📸 (c) Hugh Clark / Bat Conservation Trust . . . . This beautiful photo of a greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) in flight was taken by Hugh Clark. - @animalsonearth__ on Instagram

Day 33: There is a HOPE…and the hope is you! Her diet was inappropriate and confined in a small cage were impacted her natural behaviour, whether physically and psychologically. At the time of her rescue in August 2020, she weighed only 1.4kg – malnourished and stunted. Little Betung grows at a slow rate. Her health check result indicates pancytopenia and low in total protein. Today, Little Betung is 6 months old and weighs 2.00kg. A variety of fruits, vegetables and protein, a supplement makes up Betungs’ daily diet. She never skips meal time! During the outing in the forest, she gets the opportunity to dig dead wood, sunbathing, climbing small trees and exercise. It is likely her rehabilitation will be a much longer process. Time will be her healer. With appropriate nutrition, medical care and the amount of Love and Care help Betung in much improved physical and psychological health. She NEEDS you to help with her medical recovery. You can donate to https://www.bsbcc.org.my/donate.html or adopt Betung at https://www.bsbcc.org.my/share-bear-adoption.html. Every contribution is hugely appreciated. ❤️ Can you help? #savesunbears #sunbear #bsbcc #rehabilitation #adoption #wongsiewte © BSBCC / Chiew Lin May - @bsbcc on Instagram

The bizarre looking aye-aye, Daubentonia madagascariensis, is the world’s largest nocturnal primate. Endemic to the island of Madagascar, this primate has a number of morphological adaptations to aid their unusual feeding habits. By tapping tree-bark with their long thin middle fingers they can locate cavities, then using their large ears they listen for the sounds of grubs burrowing beneath the bark. If a grub is heard, the aye-aye will rip open the cavity with its teeth and use their dextrous fourth finger to hook out the grub. Ranking 19th on the EDGE mammal list, and IUCN classing them as Endangered this primate is at risk from not only habitat destruction but with local superstition regarding them as an evil omen, the aye-aye is killed on sight in certain areas.
