Somewhere in the villages of Tamil Nadu, a determined set of rural women are working to make our homes chemical-free. The farmer in Maithreyi first saw how she contaminated farm soil by using chemical-laden products at home. The connection was simple – water-soil-food. “Was it even possible to replace the toxicity with effective and affordable natural alternatives?” – thus @naturallywildideas was born. Maithreyi and Ajay, her architect husband and cofounder, lived where she could access forest produce and saw women from disadvantaged backgrounds struggle to make a living. Now, nearly 90 barely educated rural women to make licensed high-quality products and run the cooperative – a testimony to her idea of a rural enterprise run entirely by women for women. It also proves rural women can live financially independent and dignified lives if given an opportunity. A chance encounter with the products at her daughter’s school prompted Latha to connect with Maithreyi, and after spending a day with Maithreyi, her family and the women, Latha decided to be part of this incredible journey. “Here was this person redefining the vocabulary of rural enterprise. Did you know, 100% of the profits go back to the women of WIT? How could I not be a part of it, especially given that my last one decade was spent working with marginal farmers and forming women self-help groups”, says Latha, founder-partner of @lagom.world and who is otherwise into regenerative agriculture? They reunite as teenagers to solve the mystery of their separation, and to confront the deeply haunted past of a town in rural Georgia. 🌴 I’m so honored to be working with LBYR again, and especially my amazing editor, @alvinaling. 🌴 I consider this one an #ownvoices story, because my family represents the kind of color spectrum that society refuses to accept—even to this day. I remember the very first time an adult insisted to me that it was impossible for my brother and I to be full-blood relations (I was a child). I also remember the most recent time a woman refused to believe I could possibly be Black—this confrontation occurred only three months ago, and it’s just as painful as it ever was. (Swipe through for pictures of my brother and me). 🌴 Like many mixed-race kids, I’m passionate about standing up for our right to exist and identify how we feel we must—as well as our right to be considered family, despite our different skin tones. There are more mixed-race families than ever, and I hope MIRROR GIRLS contributes to our visibility by representing some of our unique sorrows and joys. Can’t believe it’s been 15 years today since I moved to America! I was 21 years old then, but in many ways I “grew up” here. I never held a paying job, had a bank account, lived away from family, paid rent, or really been responsible for myself until this day (youngest child in a protective Indian home!). I learned so much about me and my goals in all these years. I came to this country to get my Masters in Biomedical Engineering, however, the freedom and opportunities this country stands for allowed me to pursue my love for food and restaurants. Never thought that was an option for me! So grateful for the last 15 years, couldn’t imagine it any other way! Lots of emotions today. Today would have been Day 1 of #YWLS2020. We have come such a long way over the years! My first event as events director was YWLS 2017 and we had about 1,000 young conservative women and it was the most empowering event. Over the years we have grown the event to 1,500+ and stepped up the game BIG TIME. Aloha everyone! My name is Malika Dudley and I’m doing an IG takeover of the alumni account. I’m a Big Island girl from Papaikou that graduated from Hilo High School in 2000. My sisters still live there but I moved to Maui about seven years ago. I’m a 2004 graduate of UH-Manoa with degrees in French and Communicology (the study of human communication). I started my MA in 2004 but after a year became Miss Hawaii and paused my education. Then, I took a complete 180 and was hired by KGMB9 news (later Hawaii News Now) to do weather and enrolled in the three year Broadcast Meteorology distance learning program at Mississippi State. Fast-forward to today, I was just hired as KITV4 Island News newest meteorologist. I’m so excited to be a part of Hawaii’s most credentialed weather team (both Paul and Pete are meteorologists as well) and make my debut this weekend on Good Morning Hawaii weekends!
