Among them, one was more interesting and awe-inspiring than the others; yet, overall it was a very-well thought out collection. Even more so after a couple of editions long stagnation in creativity on anniversary editions. Id like to take the anniversary opportunity and go back to where it all started - the year 2000, celebration of the 10th birthday of the modern A. Lange & Söhne: Langematik Anniversary. A few basics about the watch: It is the first enamel-dial watch in the history of the modern brand. Launched as a limited edition of 500 pieces, it took years for A. Lange & Söhne to deliver all numbers both due to production constraints as well as the inexperience in enamel craft. Encased in platinum, it measures 37 mms in diameter and a slender, under 9 mms in thickness; powered by the exceptional automatic caliber Sax-0-Mat. The price in 2001 for this stunning model was €20k. In my book, the Jübilaums Langematik is one of the best watches the brand has created. It was a complete distinctive offering at its time with Roman Numerals, a fun red 12 and two piece enamel dial. For example, as much beautiful as this years 1815 Thin, in my view, it lacks the lively soul and the eccentric touch brought by this watch here. The diamond pattern on each quarter complements the Roman Numerals just perfectly, forming a transition point to the bezel. The roaring 20s & the Art Deco era were sources of great creativity for Vacheron Constantin, it is therefore of little surprise to note that the brand’s first skeleton watch dates from 1924. 🤩 💎 It is however not “simply” a skeleton pocket watch (with caliber RA 17’’’, the same found in the first Chronomètre Royal models) but one in a rock crystal case circled in a platinum ring and set with Burmese sapphires! 🤤 However, the object of this post is ref 43032 a superbly sophisticated and elegant extra slim perpetual calendar launched in 1994 at a time where skeleton work was not yet seen. 💀 @VacheronConstantin decided to apply the delicate art of skeletonizing and engraving to the ref 43031 which was the brand’s first perpetual calendar wristwatch launched in 1983, it showed the brand’s attachment to mechanical watchmaking in the wake of the quartz crisis and is a tribute to the brand’s perpetual calendar pocket watches especially with its 48 month cycle. 🎖️ Ref 43032 is a potent mix of Vacheron Constantin’s prowess and expertise: it features the ultra slim cal 1120 which for almost half a century from its launch in 1968 the world’s thinnest automatic movement upon which a perpetual calendar module had been added. 🧐 The movement’s plates and bridges were delicately hollowed and superbly hand engraved. In the year 1974, Mr. Jean-Jacques Cartier sold this asymmetrical Trapezoid (also called Oblique) driving watch to a young man named Clive Kandel. Its price was 770 sterling. The then high cost was due to it being the only one ever made in yellow and white ribbed gold. It was designed by Rupert Emmerson, who as well painted the dial. The movement was a Jaeger LeCoultre 479, fitted by Eric Denton. This watch was as challenging to manufacture as the London Crash at the time, due to its intricacy. Kandel asked his salesman if the cabochon sapphire set crown could be replaced with a ruby and the reverse side engraved ‘Cartier London’. Mr. Jean-Jacques Cartier then approved these requests, plus a new watch band that took one full day to make. J.J.Cartier seemed to really appreciate the enthusiasm of such a young client. Kandel was one of the very few allowed to read the famous library called ‘The Royal Room’ — Located right in the New Bond Street boutique as we know of today. Every time he wore the driving watch, it caused so much attention that it made him feel wary. Fast forward to five years later, it was then stolen by a bait-and-switch dealer thief. The thief died. The next owner died. The owner after that died. A few years ago, it popped up on sale at a Christie’s auction in New York with a pre-sale estimate of around $4000. Despite the opinions of the experts that it was worth only $4000, Kandel was prepared to bid up to $70,000. He bid up to $35,000, but at that point, he feared that the watch might have been cursed and dropped out of the bidding. The final bid was the next bid at $40,000.
