Beyond 80 degrees north! This is as far north as it is possible to travel on a sailing yacht before reaching the edge of the sea ice which extends all the way to the north pole. This shot was taken after we had sailed north from the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard. We paused here for a while to watch the ghostly movement of the sea ice as it gently rises and falls on the slight swell. It makes you realise there are somethings much bigger than us in the universe. Nature is in charge. Human climate change is drastically effecting the Arctic with predictions that summer sea ice could disappear by 2050. Kirsten Maersk ingick i Maersks K-klass som var då var de största containerfartygen i världen och först över den magiska 6000-gränsen vad gäller kapacitet i TEU (tjugofotscontainers). I Göteborg fick man göra stora investeringar för att klara dessa bjässar – bland annat i två nya kranar och kringutrustning för 150 miljoner kronor. – Vi gjorde en ickekalkyl. Att inte köpa dessa kranar hade varit att visa omvärlden att vi la oss - att vi accepterade att bara vara en feederhamn, sade Kjell Svensson som var pressansvarig på Göteborgs Hamn AB vid tiden. Göteborgs hamn förblev en internationell storhamn och kunde fortsätta understödja svenska företags handel med omvärlden. Nu står Göteborgs hamn inför liknande utmaningar som då, men i ännu större skala. Dagens största fartyg har kapacitet för mer än tre gånger så mycket last som fartyget i bilden och väntas bli ännu större framöver, vilket innebär att de går allt djupare. The Donna Kay is a shrimp boat that washed ashore at The Point on Cape San Blas sometime in October of 2018. Some reports blame Hurricane Michael for the vessel’s grounding, while others claim the boat had run ashore a few weeks prior to the storm (if I’m able to track down the real story, I will update accordingly). 📟 Saturday 6th June 2020 📟 Whilst on patrol yesterday the team were asked to visit Dover Harbour to offer words of advice to 2 kayakers who had been recovered by the launch Dovorian having been swept across the harbour. On returning to patrol we were then tasked to a yacht anchored off Hythe which was causing concern. Dover Lifeboat was launched and although on arrival the occupant seemed fine, the decision was made with him to tow him back to Dover Harbour for his safety, given the weather conditions and particularly as he was struggling to make comms with the CG Operations room should he have needed assistance. We met him at Dover Harbour to offer words of advice ensuring he communicates with the Coastguard re his intentions and has all the necessary equipment for his voyage. Next to the underway ice stations we conduct en route measurements with the instruments installed on board #Polarstern. Team Atmos uses them to investigate the energy and gas fluxes in the marginal ice zone. The data will be combined with water column measurements of team ocean, which they take with a deep #CTD cast. Once we are out of the ice, we will travel along the ice edge, passing it again to have a second transit through the marginal ice zone. Our last scientific waypoint is an ice floe, where position buoys had been installed during the #MOSAiC flight campaign. We will hopefully have the time to work on the ice there again, to combine current data with the data from the flight campaign.
