It’s devastating to see so many cross-country and track programs shutting down across the country but the reality is, funding for collegiate athletics is kind of a mess 💔 To break it down, you have to remember 3 things: 1️⃣ Olympic sports are not money-makers. Football and sometimes basketball are the primary revenue sports for athletic departments and with the loss of the NCAA Tournament last spring, football for some conferences, and no fans/reduced capacity in stadiums — every school is hurting for money. 2️⃣ Schools spend A LOT of money on coaching salaries (not usually for the XC coach...). When a FB or MBB coach gets fired before their contract ends, they’re usually being paid a buyout AND then a department has to pull together the money for a flashy salary to lure in a new coach and their staff. 3️⃣ There is a facilities arms race going on, where each school wants to attract the best recruits by having an incredible athletic complex- the best fields, stadiums, locker rooms, performance centers, dining halls, and, yes, nap rooms and slides. 🆒 So, the bottom line: there isn’t really an incentive for athletic departments to save money for a rainy day. They can’t tap into university endowments because that money is usually earmarked for other university uses. Finished up my first professional indoor season with a “meh” 7th place finish at USAs. The opportunity to run in a US final doesn’t come around often, so will take the next few months to make sure I’m ready for the next one. So this season didnt really turn out as I had expected it to... First I sprained my ankle by being clumsy so I had to redshirt indoor season😬. Then corona happened and the whole college track season got cancelled. When I came back to Sweden my plan was to make up for all the competitions that I missed in the US but then my hamstring got bad and I didn’t want to risk anything. Judson Greer and Jack Scherer competed in the @runmcdc Men’s Pro 5,000m last Saturday. Judson ran a tough race going out fast and trying to stick with the top pack as best he could. In the end the hard pace took its toll and he struggled the last couple laps, but overall Judson still came out with an excellent time of 14:28 and a new PR. Jack placed 17th in the Men’s 5,000m at the Music City Distance Carnival, running a 49 second PR of 14:45.88. It was his first attempt at this distance on the track and his second race of 2020. I had higher hopes for the race, but I was happy with my first two miles and just need to work on holding the pace I was at through to the end. It was a good learning experience, and it will motivate me to keep working hard for the upcoming XC season. I was very grateful for the opportunity to race again. -Judson “I have lukewarm feelings about this race. For one thing my PR in the 5k (XC) going in was 15:36 so I made a big jump. On the other hand, I felt really strong throughout the race but didn’t capitalize fully on that and had a bit left in the tank at the end. In these types of races, mistakes are costly and I made quite a few today. I raced clumsy and while I’m disappointed to not have executed as I envisioned or know I am capable; I am also pretty proud that I was able to maintain composure and focus in the times I fell short. T2 was a host of unforgiving mistakes in itself, but there were others I made throughout the race. What I find comforting (in an odd way) about races like this is that it is not hard for me to determine where work needs to be done and how to be better for next time. So today provided great insight and feedback and I can’t wait to be better at the next opportunity, which is right around the corner! I was inspired by many of the other ladies racing on the course today. Of course by the always smiling @georgiatb on winning the World Championship and racing 💪🏻 and 💨, the overcomer of all adversity @floraduffy and the consistent Hamburg crusher @laura_linran. They were so impressive, and many more inspiring performances ran deep today and went far beyond the podium ladies. So my feelings: disappointed, proud, hungry for more, relieved to have the first race done, thankful for the opportunity and so so happy to reunite with this wonderful community of people. Una semana después de poner fin a la temporada y asimilando todo lo ocurrido queria primero que nada agradecer a mi familia y entrenador @toni_puig por todo el esfuerzo y a @adidas (@asuarezbermudez ), @proyectofer y @ucam_universidad por todo el apoyo que sin ellos todo esto no podría ser posible. Analizando la temporada la verdad que el aire libre a sido bastante complicado ya que en el Campeonato de Europa sub-20 que iba con toda la ilusión de pelear por la medalla de oro y un virus en la barriga me hizo quedarme sin fuerzas el día de antes de la semi y de la final y se me hizo imposible aun así conseguí una 4ta plaza que me sabia a muy poco. Pero esa infeccion me dejo tocado un par de semanas y no pude preparar bien las vallas absolutas hasta llegar al campeonato de españa absoluto que me volvía a sentir bien pero la verdad, no fue mi mejor campeonato pero bueno me quite un poco la espinita y consegui un segundo puesto detras de la bestia de @ortega_110_hurdles al cual felicito por llevarse el diamante esta pasada noche👏🏻💎. Por ultimo felicitar a un gran amigo, @luisalort que después de pasar un aire libre complicado por las lesiones a vuelto mas fuerte que nunca con un sub-14 y 3º en el de España Absoluto. After all that anticipation, having held on to the dream of another @britishathletics medal ever since Glasgow back in Feb to keep myself motivated during lockdown, I almost fell over my own feet two laps in and ruined it all! WOW 🤩 Australian National 1500m record 🇦🇺4:00.42 at @istaf_berlin 😃 I took a chance, went all in and @pete.j.julian was confident if I raced aggressively, I could catch something special. Today that was lucky to be a PB and the Aussie record! As you can see @lauraweightman1 and I gracefully gave every inch we could in hopes of cracking the 4:00 barrier, but it’s fire in the belly for another day! 💪🏼 Here’s a couple of fun stats for you: 1. @ryangregson25 and I both got started with Albion Park Little Athletics Club back in the day and now hold the men’s and women’s 🇦🇺 outdoor national 1500m records. Pretty cool feat for a small south coast of NSW grassroots club! 2. At 23, I’m the first Aussie woman to hold both the 1500m and 5,000m national records in 23 years. This is more than sport. There has been devastating decisions and announcements recently where some colleges have been cutting track and field programs. Close to our hearts, the University of Minnesota recently made the decision to cut the Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field programs. Without this team, the opportunity would not have been there for @benfblankenship, @hassyhass35, @ha_runabda and many more to become Olympians, USA Trials finalists, NCAA Champions, All-Americans and above all else, participants of track and field. This is much bigger than the Minnesota T&F team, this is for our sport. T&F is one of the largest sports for racial and cultural diversity, it brings everyone together. At a time where we need unity, the last thing we need is for the opportunities to be removed for young aspiring athletes from all backgrounds. #MySydney2000 So many great memories from the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It was my first Olympic Games, first time I represented Australia as a senior athlete & only my 2nd 5km. I did a PB in my heat, marginally missing the final by a few spots. I can still remember the roar in the stadium when we marched in for the opening ceremony & also when I went to the front in my race. So many inspirational performances by our team but most of all, I loved my family being there to experience it all with me. We’ve all had a lot of time to think lately. That’s saying a lot because I generally have a lot of time with just my thoughts as an endurance athlete. Since track meets started getting cancelled a few weeks ago, I’ve become a semiprofessional virus tracker. I knew deep down that this was going to be bad, very bad, and how that would personally affect what I have been working towards for the past 4 years to a decade: the Olympic Games (likely my last chance). I know there are a lot of people around the world in unimaginably tougher circumstances - my heart goes out to all of those that have lost a loved one as well as the people working in hospitals and testing centres right now and in days and weeks to come. YOU are the real MVPs! I live a life that only a lucky few get to experience, and in reality, my daily life is not dramatically affected. That doesn’t mean the COC and ultimately the IOC’s decision did not affect me emotionally. Many of you know the IOC announced that the Olympics will be postponed until summer 2021. This is, without a doubt, the right decision. I have been asked a lot by family and friends, what my plan was after Tokyo. I answered them all the same, “I’m not thinking much past Tokyo, to be completely honest with you.” As a professional athlete, trying to squeeze out every ounce of your potential requires complete unwavering focus, to the point that nothing even exists past a certain date. That date for me was August 3, 2020, the final of the Olympic Games Steeplechase. I’d coincidentally turn 31 on the day of the final and (spoiler alert) I won’t be any younger in 2021. It has been a bumpy few years for me in this sport - I haven’t really had a race or performance that I was truly happy with, or more importantly (to me anyway), proud of. I started to think my best days were behind me. However, this winter I was able to run the Olympic standard in the 5000m, an event which is not my specialty. This gave me the confidence, but more importantly the belief, that my best days are still ahead. So, its back to the grind stone for me, because you can always get stronger and better and that will be my aim for 2021. - @hughesteeple on Instagram
