French marine biologist Louis Marie Auguste Boutan poses for the camera in what is one of the first ever underwater photographic portraits; 1899. Despite this incredible feat the first underwater photograph known was actually taken by an Englishman by the name of William Thompson in Dorset in 1856. Thompson didnt actually dive to take his photograph. Instead, he lowered his housed plate camera to the seabed in Weymouth Bay and operated the shutter from a boat anchored over the site. For Louis, with his engineer brother Auguste they developed several types of underwater cameras and equipment. The camera was a rectangular metallic box fitted with specialised lenses and plates fixed to a tripod. External controls were used to adjust the shutter, and a rubber balloon was manipulated to adjust buoyancy as needed. In using his camera he found the images were cloudy. To remedy this, he added blue-colored glasses to the interior of the waterproof camera box to act as filters for greater clarity. - @lookthroughhistory on Instagram

Object of the Week: Megaplanet, Josh Simpson, Shelburne Falls, MA, 2006. 2006.4.154. We commissioned Josh Simpson to create the 1000th paperweight for the Museums collection in 2006 and challenged him to make it weigh 100 pounds. At a whopping 107 pounds, Megaplanet resonates with visitors, staff, and volunteers alike. ‘Spaceman’ by Chris Searl Back in 1961, a young chimpanzee by the name of Ham was strapped to a Mercury Redstone rocket and fired into the Earth’s orbit. For 16 minutes 39 seconds the little Cameroonian primate soared through space, not looking out the window, but rather pushing buttons and pulling leavers so as to avoid the remote-control electric shocks the ground staff could inflict upon him should he not follow his flight training perfectly. Gravity eventually pulled him back to Earth and he plopped safely into the Atlantic where he was rescued by the military. In just over a quarter hour Ham had gone from unknown banana eating, shit flinging test pilot to total global icon. The hairy little bastard was a goddamn American hero! Although the USSR had already sent a man into orbit, it was Ham’s flight that launched the USA and the rest of the world’s imaginations into the possibility of potential of space travel and along with that, also kicked off an obsession with astronauts that lasts to this day. In those early decades of shooting for the stars, when the space race between the US and the USSR was at fever pitch, each successful launch and safe return to Earth by astronauts was celebrated like Tupac’s hologram playing at Cochella for the first time. Astronauts were the biggest celebrities in the world, but more than just fame, it was what they represented that captured mankind’s hearts and minds; the potential of humankind, the wonder of human achievement, the hope that when we put our minds to it, anything could be accomplished.
