What started out as an urban sketching assignment for local artist and student Hannah Shafiroff, turned into a full blown love affair for Torrance Bakery, and we just cant get enough of her amazing talent!ā ā As part of an illustration Travel Log assignment, Hannah was tasked to chose a special place and create a series of illustrations highlighting what she loved about that place. We were honored she chose Torrance Bakery! ā ā This was the first illustrations of many that Hannah has created using watercolor and colored pencils. Since that time we have commissioned Hannah to create several other illustrations that we now feature with great pride on our walls in the Bakery and Cafe. We also have many of her custom created greeting cards for sale.ā ā Hannah is currently working towards her BFA in Illustration at Cal State University Long Beach. This is our sentimental store-versary post. A year ago we opened Good Game Grill hoping to form a new community around our love of board games. We obviously had no idea what a challenging year we were in for. (None of the business planning books we read mentioned the possibility of a global pandemic!) We never would have made it this far without the support of our amazing community, so we have a lot of people to thank: our regular customers and members, our friends and family, our fellow Providence small businesses that have been so welcoming especially @likenoudder and @grannysquibb , and our founding staff members especially Rob who moved here with us from Brooklyn to make this crazy idea a reality. It is one of the largest bazaars in the city. Located in the EminƶnĆ¼ quarter of the Fatih district, it is the most famous covered shopping complex after the Grand Bazaar. I have been waiting to speak out in this environment because of course our restaurants handle food safely, use gloves excessively, wash hands compulsively...and the goalposts have been moving by the day if not the hour and minute. We opened all of our restaurantsāStock Fishtown, Res Ipsa Cafe, Stock Rittenhouseāas neighborhood restaurants. Neighborhood restaurants in the truest sense. We want to emerge from this intact and remain part of our communities. We have received exactly zero guidance and are doing our best as voracious news consumers who give a shit about the health of our team and guests. It seems time for @governortomwolf or @phillymayor to shut us down. Here is the reality. We as a restaurant community are limping along, coming out of a weekend during which we all intended to take the temperature. Fighting for scraps entertaining curbside only etc. It wasnāt great. Those among us who maybe came close to projected sales are still wondering whatās next. Was this the last supper? Do only the most cavalier bars and beer gardens among us who are packing people in as they normally would stand to benefit in this environment? What are the protocols to keep a retail business open in this environment? We donāt know. You havenāt told us. We need leadership now. There are benefits and programs in the pipeline that may be compromised if we donāt keep limping along until the bitter end. Are we wrong to do this? We donāt know because there is no communication. We watch almost daily press conferences hoping for some guidance but there is nothing. We have been trying to keep our staff paid and our guests safe according to the health department and CDCās guidance but the hole seems to get deeper and we have no idea wtf is going on. We are part of a low-margin ecosystem that employs many, engages an unusually large number of vendors given the scope of our operations, and is integral to commercial rents in our neighborhoods. Ā In late SeptemberĀ 2007, I was walkingĀ Thor, my then two-year-old Havanese, through the beautiful tree-lined streets of Boerum Hill.Ā Ā Just the day before, I had been talking to myĀ business partner, John, aboutĀ expanding ourĀ design and construction companyĀ when, lo and behold,Ā I saw a For Lease sign at the corner of Pacific Street and Bond.Ā It was an ideal locationāwe signed the lease and soon started to design and build out what would become Building on Bond. Ā The goal was to have a place that would be part of theĀ communityāwhere a neighbor could drop off a key for an out of town guest, or sit for hours writing their first novel, perhaps launch a new business, or meet up to chat with friends.Ā Ā I was thrilled to see it become more than that.Ā Ā Over the years, BoB became an extension of many neighbors living roomsā¦a place for pumpkin carving & gingerbread making, to hear live Jazz, or watch the World Cupā¦trivia nights, presidential debates & election results (for better and worse), to name a few.Ā Ā Ā In 2015, believing Boerum Hill didnt have enough cool spots to get a glass of wine or a nice cocktail, we expanded next door and opened Bar Robert.Ā Ā It, too, became a successful and well-loved destinationā¦and one of the few places in the neighborhood where you could groove to tunes from a vintage jukebox or DJ. Ā Unfortunately,Ā Ive had to make a tough decisionā¦the most difficult of my life.Ā Ā And so, with a very heavy heart,Ā I have to announce that Building on Bond and Bar RobertĀ will not be reopening atĀ this location...and perhaps never again.Ā An uncooperative landlord has made it impossible for usĀ to reopen (suffice it to say, I would rather not get into specific details)...
