Yesterday was World Orangutan Day🦧But there may not be many years left to celebrate these amazing creatures if things continue down the same path. Palm oil is the leading cause of Orangutans being pushed near extinction due to their habitats being destroyed for plantations. This leads to Orangutans losing food sources, causing them to starve or go looking for food in the plantations and nearby villages, which leads to human conflict. If caught in a plantation, the mother is likely killed for being considered a pest in the home that was originally stolen from her. There have even been cases of female orangutans being used as sex slaves! I cannot comprehend the low level human you have to be to pay for sex with an orangutan🤬All of this leads to many orphaned babies, which, if they dont die first, are kept as a pet, where they suffer severe emotional & psychological trauma as well as malnutrition from being improperly fed. Orangutans stay with their mothers until ages 7-8. This is the longest dependency of any animal. They learn all the skills needed to survive in the wild. The lucky enough orphans are rehabilitated at a nearby jungle school program, where they learn the skills needed from pseudo human mothers. Female orangutans only give birth once every 8 years & around 5,000 are killed every year, so do the math. If a product is causing all this devastation to the planet & killing animals, then that product is not vegan. Palm oil is the furthest thing from cruelty free but there are many businesses that continue to falsely claim that items like oreos, nutter butter, etc which contain palm oil are vegan. They value monetary gain over not destroying the planet or not supporting extinction. Once they realize that no amount of money can buy a new planet, itll be much too late. Do not support companies whose products contain palm oil. The word sustainable is a lie because palm oil is a monoculture. Guess what my district mandated during the time we were experiencing the trauma of orange apocalyptic skies, hazardous smoke, and families still adjusting to new schedules and distance learning? Standardized tests for our 1st through 5th graders that will be reported to the state. (Yes, reporting to the state is required, no, the highly problematic computerized test they chose to mandate is not.) This mandate after a summer of emails from administration on how we must all be trauma informed. The hypocrisy makes my skin crawl and the dehumanizing insistence of standardizing any child right now makes me ill. Long story short, many of us at my school site organized a boycott and sent a thoughtful, passionate, well-researched letter to our superintendent, the schools board, and school district heads informing them of our boycott of the test and our alternative plan for assessments to administer on a more realistic time-line. We are still waiting for a response, but I am proud of our small collective action. We have a long, long way to go in our district and even at our school site to repair the harm that has been been done to many Black and Brown students; to offer reparations for the education debt (Gloria Ladson-Billings); to more actively hire and retain teachers of color, especially Black teachers; to become a school and district that truly centers Black and Brown experiences, histories, achievements, and joy. This action may result in punitive measures taken against us, but ultimately our hope is that there will be a deeper investment in dialogue and action to end standardized testing and figure out assessments that are supportive and meaningful for everyone involved. Using real Subaru photos as inspiration, Hudson took to his backyard with his smartphone and the model cars to create this photo series, Little Big Shots. “I walked around my yard with each car and looked for locations that worked for them,” says Hudson. Mme Fiander a demandé à Hudson de photographier des objets du quotidien dans des perspectives qui les feraient paraître plus grands que nature. Il a judicieusement choisi la Meilleure Outback de tous les temps comme premier sujet. Nous avons tellement été épatés par son travail que nous lui avons envoyé d’autres modèles réduits à photographier! Inspiré par de véritables photos de Subaru, Hudson a arpenté sa cour avec son téléphone intelligent et ses modèles réduits pour créer cette série de photos intitulée Little Big Shots. « Je me suis promené dans ma cour avec chacune des voitures et j’ai cherché un environnement qui pourrait marcher », explique Hudson. Quel sera son prochain projet? « J’aimerais photographier des voitures en taille réelle au Salon de l’auto. » Quelque chose nous dit qu’un grand avenir l’attend.
