Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of death on the planet. It has many causes: from smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity, to air pollution, and rare and neglected conditions such as Chagas Disease and cardiac amyloidosis. In the time of COVID-19, CVD patients are faced with a double-edged threat. Not only are they more at risk of developing severe forms of the virus, but they may also be afraid to seek ongoing care for their hearts. The theme for this year is Use Heart o Beat! Use Heart is about using … Your head To understand what it takes to live a heart healthy life and to act on that knowledge, changing your behaviour for a better quality of life now and in the future. Your influence As an individual to set an example for your loved ones. As a healthcare professional to help your patients make positive changes for their heart health. As an employer to invest in the heart health of your employees. As a government to implement policies and initiatives that will lead to better societal heart health, such as sugar taxes, smoking bans and reducing air pollution. Your compassion To look beyond the self and act in ways that support the most vulnerable in society; those with underlying heart-related conditions that may put them at greater risk in the time of COVID-19. Slow your scroll remember days 1-14 of stay at home in March? I LOVED IT! As an introvert and someone who also has a pretty full social life, I found it liberating to stay at home. No FOMO, no saying YES when I really wanted to say NO. I took the time to pause. Its day 188ish and I do not love it. As a grief coach, I know from my training and working with clients that grieving in isolation is not the same as communal grieving. As a pretend anthropologist, I know that we are tribal by nature, and we need other people to survive and thrive. In talking to my single friends and clients, I found that there was a romanticizing of what it must be like going through 2020 in a relationship. It must be better than staying at home single right? Facts, its not easier in a relationship. My friends in relationships are also rose-colored glassing the single life. Divorce rates are up, and all the things we used to use to distract ourselves from feeling are not as readily available. Less hiding, more seeking. Whether you are single or in a relationship, one thing remains true, comparison is not only the thief of joy - its the thief of feeling our feelings. Check on your people and check your motives. Do you have the capacity to be honest with what its like to be you right now? Are you available to hear what its like for someone else? Please dont make the rookie mistake of hearing someone elses experience thinking that its an invitation for you to FIX. Now more than ever, we need to FEEL IT vs. FIX IT. Fixers are going to fix because your discomfort makes them uncomfortable. And if youre a fixer - youre probably fixating on someone else as a way to bypass your feelings. 2020 is heart work - not head work.
