The word “funeral” in Hebrew means to “accompany” or “to escort.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg escorted millions of us to a deeper understanding of our rights and responsibilities as Americans, and a grateful nation now escorts and accompanies her to the next phase of her eternal life. The somberness of the occasion Is tinged with fear, much the way I remember the assassinations of the Kennedys and Dr. King. It’s a fear that without them here, bad things will happen that would not have happened had they remained. In the case of the Kennedys and King, much of what we feared has indeed come to pass… always making the anniversary of their assassinations even more painful. But with Ruth Bader Ginsburg we still have a choice. Her spirit of justice will only leave the earth if we fail to carry it forward in our own lives. Each of us can take into our hearts some of the dedication she displayed with hers. Each of us can say a simple prayer: that we might be a little more like her. In the end, we accompany her to her peaceful place in heaven as she has accompanied us to what can still yet be a more peaceful place on earth. May the march to justice grow stronger now, not weaker. PUPPY LOVE⁠ Back in the day when we were party promoters (seems a life time ago), one of our parties, entitled Luxury & Degradation was a tribute to @Jeffkoons (b. 1955) the American contemporary artist, often called the king of kitsch. Being young and unhampered by life we had such lofty ideas and everything seemed possible. So we were totally unfazed in re-creating Koons extraordinary 43ft high art piece Puppy (1992). Made on a steel frame and covered with blossoming flowers it was to be the centre piece of our jaunt-from-London secret location summer party. The beautiful spectacle that we had envisioned sadly never came to be. The local police got a whiff of the (illegal) party and we had to switch locations sharpish. So our puppy never got built. Today we have a photograph hung by our kitchen table, shot by Jurgen Teller, of the puppy that media mogul Peter Bryant and his wife, the leggy model Stephanie Seymour, commissioned Koons to make for their Connecticut estate (seriously rich). Seymour lies provocatively draped across the top in her lingerie in very much a pose of surrender. We certainly had to surrender our vision of dancing all night under the stars around a floral marvel. We managed to move the party to an ice cream factory in Wandsworth and despite it not being the sensation we had planned, the DJs still flew in from New York, the punter partied hard and we all saw the sunrise. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will break one final barrier on Friday, becoming the first woman and the first Jewish American to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol. The honor, arranged by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as a private ceremony at the Capitol, will bring to a close a week of public memorials for Justice Ginsburg, who died last Friday at 87. Her family plans to hold a private burial next week at Arlington National Cemetery. Members of the House and Senate will be invited to pay tribute a few at a time — a precaution made necessary by the coronavirus pandemic — as Justice Ginsburg lies in state. The first viewing slots were reserved for the women serving in Congress, and later, Democratic and Republican women were to gather on the steps of the Capitol as her coffin is carried out. Only about 30 Americans have received the honor of lying in state at the Capitol: presidents, military leaders and members of Congress, all of them men. BREAKING: New fires have started in two areas of Moria camp tonight. Last nights fire (pictured) ravaged the camp and destroyed a COVID-19 medical facility, but thankfully there were no reported fatalities. We’ve rapidly re-opened our clinic with a skeleton team and started to provide some assistance to refugees affected by the fire. ⠀ The fact that the fires occurred days after the first COVID-19 cases were confirmed at the camp comes as no surprise. With the pandemic and increasing restrictions on people who have been locked down for almost five months, the situation had become unbearable. ⠀ What to know about Moria camp: Moria is Europe’s largest refugee camp and effectively an island prison for thousands inside seeking safety. Moria is overcrowded, and people have limited access to basic needs like food, toilets, showers, and health services. Mental health care needs are growing. Das bringt allerdings weder dich noch deinen Hund oder euch als Team weiter ☝️⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Heute war mal wieder so ein Raus aus der Komfortzone-Tag bei uns - Toni sollte mit mir und einem Freund, den er nicht wirklich kannte spazieren gehen. Die meisten von euch wissen, Toni fremdelt (um es mal verniedlicht auszudrücken 😜). ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Eine solche Situation ist für mich und für ihn mit Stress, Konzentration und Anspannung verbunden. Kein Wunder also, dass man solche Situationen lieber meidet 🤪 ABER man kann sie auch als tolle Möglichkeit sehen, um im Training voranzukommen, seinen inneren Schweinehund zu überwinden und als Team zusammenzuwachsen 💪💪💪 ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ....und diese Einstellung macht den entscheidenden Unterschied!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Toni hat mich wirklich überrascht und hat mir bewiesen, dass ich ihm ruhig ein bisschen mehr ver- und zutrauen darf. Of all the variables I contend with in my installation work—rain, fog, rogue waves, park rangers—wind is the most difficult to manage. It has foiled more of my shoots than I care to count, either by tangling the lines that hold the installations aloft, or by toppling the off-camera structures that support them. In recent months, however, I’ve been trying to adapt, seeking out blustery weather instead of avoiding it, constructing pieces designed not only to withstand the wind, but to act as visualizations of its turbulent, frenetic energy. (On the day shown here, it was blowing about 30 mph out of the northwest.) So far I’d give the wind mixed reviews as a collaborator. One thing I want to say is that the media is doing a very good job of only showing the violence, and looting of these protest. While that is part of the story, it is not the whole story. Before coming out today I was extremely nervous and worried about being in danger making me reluctant to protest, however I felt a responsibility to help fight. What the media isn’t showing is the PEACEFUL protest that include many people helping and supporting one another, chanting , flowers, music and honking. What saddens me is they continue to silence us using curfews, rubber bullets, and tear gas. Sending bundles and bushels of love to my city and fellow New Yorkers on this very delicate day in history. I remember being on a flight that morning, halfway across the Atlantic, heading home from Paris. The pilot came on and in French he explained the tragedy in vague detail, and in choppy English he spared us Americans the news and said that we had to turn back to Europe for reasons that would be better explained once we arrived at Charles de Gaulle. Needless to say, my heart was broken in a million pieces for the clients and friends we lost, and for all of NYC and our country. At the time, Lewis Miller, aka The Flower Bandit, was my head designer, he was holding up the fort with my Mom and our team. I’m so proud of his art installations, but especially today I’m grateful that he’s spreading much-needed beauty throughout Manhattan, flowers certainly soften the ache that we all still feel. 🤍 - @bellefleurny on Instagram

In Japan exist this amazing concept, Komorebi, (木漏れ日), which means, the sunshine filtering through the leaves of a tree. I am deeply thankful of my Japanese teachers, who not only taught me the main aspects of their culture, but to see beauty in a different way, or, perhaps, embrace it with other concepts. Absolutely gut-wrenching to see these photos from Meadowood, which has sustained major damage in the Glass Fire. The Restaurant, where I was fortunate to enjoy a number of spectacular meals and have other important life events, is gone. I have so many great memories of time spent with my family there over the years, from Easter egg hunts, breakfasts at The Grill, tennis lessons and an epic tasting or three...Sending all of my best thoughts to Chef Chris Kostow, his team and the entire staff at Meadowood. fall in california was magical. i’d brag about it to my out of state friends. halloween, pumpkin patches, corn mazes and preparing for my thanksgiving were important things on my mind. camping in the trees, sitting at the river or hitting up a winery was easy. that comfort that autumn brings was shattered in 2017. my hometown burned in the middle of the night. i was on tour but it affected me like i was there. i didn’t even think it was possible. didn’t have a clue that a wildfire could attack a city 20 miles east of the ocean. never thought twice about smelling smoke in the air. but every year since the uneasiness of life in CA in late summer and into the fall sets in. it’s hard to recall the simplicity of northern california beauty, but i know it’s there somewhere. here we are in september 2020, the worst fire year in history. the whole state burns somewhere. everyone knows someone with an evacuation order. and through all the gnarly-ness i know there is light. i went out today with my iphone and documented the red orange sky. had never seen anything so apocalyptic and beautiful. really sums up how it feels to be a californian at this moment. to be surviving through an “unprecedented” pandemic and fire season all at the same time. to know our state will burst with wildflowers and new growth again. but we gotta get through the brunt of it first. we’re glowing dark and red but the blue sky is under there too. - entry from my upcoming book “from lockdown, with love” which is me documenting 2020 and everything it continues to throw at us. 🌩 //remember to vote this year. climate change is very real and we need politicians who believe in the power of science and green energy. more than ever. sending lots of luv to the west coast. - @britobrien on Instagram

The last of my favorite “old” images... Alex Zanardi celebrating winning the Toronto Molson Indy on July 19, 1998. Zanardi, who raced in Formula 1 and won two CART championships and is credited with making the burnout “donut” popular during post-race celebrations, was involved in a dramatic and violent crash in Germany on September 15, 2001, during which he instantly lost both his legs. Zanardi miraculously survived and eventually returned to racing in modified touring cars and also went on to compete in handcycling and triathlons and won multiple gold medals at Paralympic Games and World Champinships in hand cycling.
