What would you do? 🤣 🦔 I still remember spotting this rolled up baby hedgehog on the roadside in Kenya 10 years ago in 2010 when running my first African photo tour. I gently picked it up to see if it was ok. It was alive ❤️ just a bit freaked out from the traffic, and so once I put it someplace quieter (and started taking these macro photos), it twitched it’s little nose, wriggled it’s little feet and gradually unfurled itself and trundled away. The authors investigated the femoral pore secretions of two species of iguanas: the Pink Land-Iguana (Conolophus marthae) and the Galápagos Land-Iguana (Conolophus subcristatus). Their data suggests that the differences in the chemical secretions among the two species may help prevent hybridization between them. Researchers at the University of Portsmouth in the UK adapt forensic fingerprinting technique to reveal fingerprints on illegally trafficked pangolin scales and help identify suspects. The research began in 2018 in collaboration with ZSL and the Wildlife Conservation Society, as well as crime officers in Benign, Kenya, Cameroon and India. The method has been used by forensic practitioners for a long time, but until now, has not been applied to wildlife crime. The researchers have worked with law enforcement agencies across Africa and Asia to share knowledge and develop new methods to tackle wildlife crime. According to Dr. Paul Smith, Director of the Forensic Innovation Centre at the University of Portsmouth: It equips the wildlife crime rangers and has the potential to be a deterrent to would-be traffickers, and a usable tool to help save the pangolin. In South Africa, the African Pangolin Working Group (APWG) has embarked on a project to return pangolins confiscated from poachers to the wild. They have been able to reintroduce Temminck’s ground pangolins in KwaZulu-Natal where they have been ecologically extinct for more than 70 years. The APWG has partnered with two private game reserves in KwaZulu-Natal for the release of the pangolins. There are dedicated teams on the ground and each pangolin is fitted with a satellite transmitter and a VHF transmitter to keep a close watch on them. Congratulations to the African Pangolin Working Group (APWG) for its great work reintroducing pangolins to South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province! After being locally extinct for 30-40 years due to illegal hunting and trafficking, rescued pangolins have now been reintroduced by the APWG with help from the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital. After a period of veterinary care at the Hospital, the pangolins have a soft release back into the wild, so they are able to adjust to their surroundings and are monitored after their release using tracking tags. . Despite increased protections, #pangolin scale seizures are at an all time high amidst the #COVID19 pandemic. A new report by the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, provides new data and details that show the trade in African pangolins to Asia for traditional medicine continues to grow. Last year, not only were more pangolin scales seized globally than in any other year for which data is available, but it also saw the biggest individual seizures of pangolin scales on record. Within a single week in April, Singapore intercepted a 14.2-ton shipment and a 14-ton shipment, estimated to be from more than 70,000 pangolins. Chris Hamley, senior pangolin campaigner for @EIAEnvironment, says illegal trade may have increased because as smugglers have shifted from Asian pangolins to African ones, there was an existing supply chain they could co-opt. “In Africa, there was already the bushmeat trade chains that have pangolins, and so it was almost like a natural byproduct,” Hamley says. On the morning of September 2, 2020, Duc Trong District Economic Police searched the house of a man in Lam Dong province in Vietnam after a tip-off. Upon inspection of the residence, police seized a pangolin, a civet, and two elongated tortoises. The subject admitted to purchasing the wildlife for treating heart disease, asthma, and to eat. It should be noted that consuming pangolins has no medicinal value. The investigation continues to discover the source of the wildlife and prosecution of the subject will follow soon. We have chosen to cover the Pangolin within our foundation as it is the most trafficked animal on this planet. It’s included on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species, as well as featuring as a schedule I species under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 (WPA) of India. When David Attenborough was asked which animals he would save, his number one animal was the beautiful Pangolin as it is an incredibly special mammal. It is the only mammal with scales, it is absolutely harmless and incredibly rare. Unfortunately there is such little information available on the pangolin, so we are making it part of our mission to research and understand the Pangolin better, including it’s behaviour and ecosystem. There is no populations count or consensus made on pangolins so far, and it is our dream to realise this research in India. We are working closely with the Goa Forest Department as well as the West Bengal Forest Department to understand the ecology and conservation status of this mammal. I never really realised how unique and amazing the #Bilby was until recently. Their strange long legs and toes, enormous ears, odd gait (quadrupedal bounding overstep as they call it) and derpy head make for an unorthodox animal. After reviewing these photos and watching one cross the road the other night I can see how people fall in love with this weirdo. In retrospect it pains me to think I’ve never seen their tracks or burrows in the red #Australian deserts I’ve been too. Bilbys were once found throughout most of interior Australia but are now restricted to small pockets in remote areas, islands and fenced off reserves. @aridrecovery and the @australianwildlifeconservancy a are doing their bit to keep this #species going in fenced off reserves whilst we learn how to control the plague of #feralcats. Fenced off reserves are not the final the answer, but they are a part of the solution. They provide researchers with the perfect study area, conserve genetic #diversity and essentially buy the Bilby and many other #threatenedspecies time while we come up with an answer for a problem we caused. #Canon 60D, 40mm 2.8, 2 x #Nikon SB28s, @camtraptions PIR V2 and wireless triggers. One of the lucky pangolins that was recovered a couple of weeks ago was a large and heavily pregnant female who was later name Autumn because of the stunning colours of her scales. Autumn responded to her treatment well and was soon out foraging for ants on her nightly walks and picking up the weight that she had lost during in ordeal. Autumn has now begun the stage of her rehabilitation called soft release, where she has been released in an undisclosed location and will be closely monitored for the coming weeks to ensure that she continues to eat well and explore her new surroundings. As she is believed to be so close to the end of her pregnancy we are all waiting with baited breath to hear when the little one arrives. Providing her soft release goes well, mother and baby will then be able to continue their lives undisturbed by humans. Help us to keep helping them... Repost from @sanghapangolinproject: A few days ago we received a beautiful black-bellied pangolin into our care. This young female came in weighing 670 g, a bit dehydrated and spooked after a long journey on the road from a village outside the forest reserve. The individual who brought her in told us she was saved by hunters, but we are still investigating the circumstances around her capture to better understand the situation. The @DzangaSangha park management authorities have been notified and we will keep them updated. We are so pleased to see that the local communities are aware of our work and wanting to help pangolins, and we want to continue to make sure that people respond to these situations in the best way possible. Ultimately, we strive to inform and educate on how to minimize interference with wildlife and encourage people to leave pangolins in the forest where they belong. For now, she is being closely monitored and is responding well to the ants we are feeding her. In 2018, live pangolins were found wandering the streets in Metro Manila, some 600 kilometers away from their natural habitat in Palawan. These pangolins were escapees from traffickers’ and/or buyers’ facilities for wild meat consumption. The species is known as Philippine Pangolin, which can only be found in Palawan faunal region in the Philippines. Over the two decades from 2000–2019, an estimated equivalent of 7,634 Philippine Pangolins were documented to have been confiscated from trafficking and illegal trade in the Philippines, with a nine-fold increase recorded in just 2018–2019. Pangolin Specialist Group member, Professor Wu Shibao, who has worked in pangolin conservation for over 25 years, talks to the South China Normal University about Chinas recent announcement upgrading pangolins to the highest level of protection and is positive about the impact the protections will have on pangolins. Chinese pangolins are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. According to Professor Wu Shibao, the species has declined by up to 95% and Chinese pangolins are now rarely seen in the wild. He hopes the new level of protection will raise awareness of pangolins and help populations recover. . Uma das coisas que mais me encanta ao fotografar são esses momentos de observação de comportamento animal. Além de poder (tentar) entender um pouco mais de cada um deles, tenho tempo de ajustar a câmera para tentar fazer o melhor click possível. Nessa foto temos um tatu peba (Euphractus sexcinctus) comendo um de seus alimentos favoritos lá no quintal da antiga casinha, uma Bocaiúva, o famoso “chiclete de bugre” como os pantaneiros falam. O pantanal me trouxe, e continua trazendo coisas maravilhosas. Pessoas, momentos, imagens e memórias. Outro dia, refletindo sobre os caminhos que a vida me levou, cheguei a conclusão que a única coisa que posso reclamar é o retorno financeiro que a profissão (em alguns segmentos) dá. Infelizmente não temos piso salarial, o que leva a pagamentos, muitas vezes, abaixo do valor que ele realmente vale. Denn auf der Pirsch nach krabbelnden Leckereien nutzen die Schuppentiere ihre Krallen. So brechen sie die Bauten der #Ameisen und #Termiten auf. Und dann gehts rund! Denn die lange, klebrige Zunge schleckt die Tierchen auf. . Übrigens: je nach Art ist die Zunge 15 bis 70 Zentimeter lang. 👅 Das Riesenschuppentier kann seine Zunge sogar 40 Zentimeter ausfahren! 😲👅 . Con mucha imaginación se entiende que el nombre ya nos está dando una pista de su característica. . 🔸Otros nombres comunes son #GUALACATE #PEJIGRANDE #QUIRQUINCHODESEISBANDAS #TATUPOYU . Si unos nombres muy graciosos, 🤪pero como somos un equipo muy serio lo llamaremos como Armadillo de 6 bandas. . Muchas personas lo conocen como peludo, pero está 😤MAL. No es un Peludo 😡😡😡( Chaetophractus villosus). Sin embargo se parece bastante. No te preocupes que te comentaré unos tips para diferenciar súper bien el Peludo y el Armadillo de 6 bandas. . 👉El armadillo de 6 bandas es mucho más grande 😱que el Peludo. Puede medir perfectamente 50 cm de cuerpo, sin contar la cola .😱😱🤯 . 👉Su cola es larga ¡25cm de puro rabo! 🤯🍑 . 👉Pesa el doble que el Sr. Peludo! . Si , como lo leíste , puede alcanzar 7 kilos de peso. . 👉Su coraza es más amarilla . 👉6 bandas móviles . Y yo les pregunto ¿ Cuantas bandas móviles tiene el Peludo?.🤔 . 👉El gualacate no habita en Chile. El Peludo si 👍. . Este fue el armadillo que apareció en un video con un corderito en Uruguay. Este armadillo al igual que todos, no hay diferenciación de sus dientes y además como dato puede tener 100 dientes ! 😱. Una verdadera boca con dientes aserrados !. Honoured that our very own Sahana Ghosh and our contributor Anup Sharma were part of the The Pangolin Reports project which won the SOPA 2020 Awards - Award for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment Regional (English Language) Media. As part of this reporting project, more than 30 journalists from Asia and Africa investigated the illegal trade of the worlds most trafficked mammal - the #pangolin. Pangolins are small, solitary, largely nocturnal mammals known for their distinctive, armadillo-like appearance. The animal and their scales are smuggled through India’s northeastern states to Myanmar and then onto China and other countries, reported Sahana Ghosh. Tamil settlements in Manipur and their relatives in other states form a crucial link in this chain. International spotlight on the trafficking of rhino and tiger body parts, along with enhanced security, forced smugglers to shift to the illegal trade of small mammals like pangolins, wrote Anup Sharma.
