During the years of 1955-1959, Allan C. White worked on the construction of the gaff rigged keel cutter named Fiddlers Green. Based on Toronto Island in Canada, she would be launched in 1960. Fiddlers Green was inspired by and based on the ‘Englyn’ design originally penned by Great Britain’s Dr. T. Harrison Butler in 1933. ⠀ ⠀ While White largely kept to the original design, he modified the coach roof in order to enlarge the living accommodations, in addition to switching the rig from Bermuda to gaff. Fiddlers Green maintains a hard mahogany backbone, and Sitka Spruce pole and spars. On returning to patrol we were then tasked to a yacht anchored off Hythe which was causing concern. Dover Lifeboat was launched and although on arrival the occupant seemed fine, the decision was made with him to tow him back to Dover Harbour for his safety, given the weather conditions and particularly as he was struggling to make comms with the CG Operations room should he have needed assistance. We met him at Dover Harbour to offer words of advice ensuring he communicates with the Coastguard re his intentions and has all the necessary equipment for his voyage. There are two types of lifeboat releasing mechanisms- on load and offload. These mechanisms release the boat from the davit, which is attached to a wire or fall by means of a hook. La Armada de Colombia inició el proyecto de transferencia del buque tipo Patrol Combat Corvette – PCC 768, de la República de Corea, siendo este el segundo buque que Corea le transfiere al país, tras haber incorporado en el año 2013 el ARC “Nariño”. La Corbeta se incorporará a la Institución Naval con el nombre de ARC “Almirante Tono”, héroe nacional de la República de Colombia, siendo este el segundo al mando de la escuadra que triunfó en la Batalla del Lago de Maracaibo a orden del Almirante José Prudencio Padilla López el 24 de Julio de 1823, victoria que fue crucial para la independencia de nuestro país. The first onset of delirium due to exhaustion and sleep deprivation typical to ocean rowing is often experienced as hallucinating the sound of barking dogs. I often tried to understand what causes our brain to choose this sound in particular and I never managed to find a scientific answer but I found a poetic one: Just like mad dogs are rolling foam from their mouth, so are the waves at Beaufort 10 winds. The US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Kidd (DDG-100) hoisted the Jolly Roger — a black banner adorned with a white skull and crossbones that is commonly associated with piracy — as it returned to its homeport this week. ⠀ The first USS Kidd (DD-661) was a Fletcher-class destroyer named after Rear Adm. Isaac Kidd, who was killed aboard the battleship USS Arizona on December 7, 1941. He had the nickname Cap — a reference to the Scottish pirate Captain William Kidd — when he went through the Naval Academy. ⠀ The crew of the USS Kidd, which was commissioned in 1943, adopted the pirate as their mascot.
