📸 Amalienborgmuseet, Kongernes Samling og Rigsarkivet ©️ - @detdanskekongehus on Instagram

On September 27, 1804, Anna McNeill Whistler was born in Wilmington. McNeill was made famous in the renowned painting, “Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist’s Mother,” commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother.” Shortly after her birth, Anna McNeill moved with her family to New York. In 1831, she married George Washington Whistler, a close friend of her brother. After growing up in the U.S. and Russia, attending West Point for a brief time and then moving to Paris to study art, the Whistlers’ son James began to split his time between Paris and London. He continued to develop his craft, becoming an important figure in contemporary art circles and generating controversy for his greater focus on color and arrangement than on realism. Anna Whistler moved to London in 1863 to live with her son, and, in 1871, he painted her as the figure in “Whistler’s Mother.” The painting was first shown in 1872, extending Whistler’s reputation, but it has received mixed reviews throughout much of its history. “Whistler’s Mother” now hangs in the Musee D’Orsay in Paris and has been rarely exhibited in the United States. #TriviaTuesday: A frequently asked question is, “How tall was King Kalakaua?” Kalakaua did not answer the height question on his 1881 passport and media reports of the King’s height vary. A non-local newspaper reported during his 1881 trip that he was just 5’ tall, which is way too short, while another paper reported he was 5’11”. This photo of Kalakaua standing on the lanai next to the Chinese urns provides us with a great clue. The Chinese urns contain a decorative element, indicated by the red arrows, that can serve as a useful reference point. By examining the King’s stature in relation to that point, we can finally determine the King’s height. The color photo is of two Palace volunteers standing next to the very same urn. Ipolani on the left is 5’8” and Jeffery is 5’10”. From this evidence we can extrapolate that the king was likely about the same height as Ipolani. So, how tall was Kalakaua? We will let you decide — let us know what you think! - @iolanipalacehi on Instagram

#ThrowbackThursday! Did somebody say free ice water? 🧊 Our Historic Davenport Hotel opened on September 1st, 1914, in which we were the first hotel with many featured amenities including air conditioning, a central vacuum system, housekeeping carts, accordion ballroom doors and more. The most notable of them all, though, is that The Davenport was the first hotel in the country to deliver ice water to each guest - for free! - through specially designed faucets in each of the 405 rooms. UP FOR DEBATE: Ending the Filibuster Senators may not be sleeping on cots and rallying for 3 a.m. votes anymore, but the filibuster is very much still in use by politicians on both sides of our party lines. Calls to kill the filibuster have been growing louder as the November election approaches, begging the question –– Does the tradition warrant a review? Proponents like @TheAtlantic have argued that abolishing it outright may not be feasible, but changing protocol may make enacting a filibuster a rarity. But opponents (including @NationalReview) retort that revising the filibuster is the same as killing it –– and would harm the fundamental vision our Founding Fathers had for democracy. #debate - @intelligencesquaredus on Instagram

#eugeniademontijo #mujerunica #centenario #casadealba #recuerdos #sevilla #Madrid #españa #art #cultura #tourism #palaciovisitable - @palaciodelasduenas on Instagram

Healing along side our ancestors. How’s everyone doing? Oooph I have to say I have been on a deep dive inwards, its been a dark, challenging and incredibly healing. Recently for me, it feels like one of the keys to our health, happiness, phobias, chronic pains and mental health is encoded deeply into our roots and that by reaching back into our ancestral lineage to heal, we create profound shifts for ourselves, our family and future generations yet to be born. Experts in neuroscience and post-traumatic stress also believe that to be the case, that unresolved trauma and distress experienced by our ancestors become coded into our DNA and can emerge as depression, chronic pain, anxiety or obsessive thoughts, desperate to be resolved in the next generations. Connecting back to our roots means tapping into our ancestral lineages, feeling into what needs to come through and reaching into the future to heal our descendants from the pain of our forefathers and mothers that has been experienced. During this time Ive been delving into my ancestral roots and have felt profound shifts and healing occur. Because of this, it feels deeply important to share this work. Please join @gridactivations and I for an Ancestral healing activation with sound and guided journeying to explore, heal and honour our ancestral lineages. Sunday 19th, 7pm, by donation on zoom. Today, we reflect on the 100th Anniversary of Womens Suffrage. To commemorate this important event, Bowne House has published an article about a long line of strong, independent-minded women in the Bowne & Parsons families who lived in the home since 1661. They are remembered for their significant social and civic contributions to the Flushing and greater New York City communities. Additional information about Bowne & Parsons women can be found in a slideshow entitled On the Path to Freedom, prepared for our Juneteenth celebration and available on our website.
