I’m happy to have contributed to People Wearing Off-White by Hanka van der Voet. In good company of: Chinouk Filique de Miranda, Denise Bernts and Hanka van der Voet. My text ‘And Then You Can Post-Rationalize. (Pause.)’ is an assemblage of sentences from interviews with, and texts about Virgin Abloh, who uses the principle of quoting, editing and copying as a design approach himself. At the end of the summer of 2019, Hanka van der Voet and eventually also others, started documenting people wearing Off-White they encountered in the streets. Starting off as an obsession with collecting these images, this project quickly turned into a fascination with Off-White designer Virgil Abloh, the immense popularity of his brand, and the lack of contextualisation the mainstream fashion media was providing for this phenomenon. Jose Celso Barbosa (1857-1921) was the first Puerto Rican, and one of the first people of African and European descent, to receive a medical degree in the United States. Born in Puerto Rico, he moved to New York City in 1875 in order to further his education. In 1877 he started attending the University of Michigan, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1880. After this, he returned to Puerto Rico where he set up a practice, and introduced the idea of employers providing health care for employees. In 1899, he moved from medicine to politics, where he created the Puerto Rican Republican Party, and was known as the “father of statehood” for Puerto Rico, as one of the most outspoken pro-statehood politicians.
