I always like to tell my dad how proud I am of him. As you’ve heard, Sam was quite the brother, an amazing and loving husband, and a little bit of a handful as a boy :). I’d like to join in and share how amazing of a father and mentor he was. He and my mom raised us, they taught us what it meant to care for others, to think for ourselves and never give up, and he was the biggest role model, he taught me so much. I remember as a little boy, I would wake up early on Sunday’s to run downstairs and find him fixing different problems on the computer. I would jump up on his lap and fire off questions. “What are you doing? What does that do? Why are you doing that? What’s that, what’s this?!” He would sit there and answer every question, teaching me how to problem solve, troubleshoot the solution, and keep tinkering until it made sense, until we figured it out. “We make a pretty good team” he’d say to me, yeah, we always did make a pretty good team. He was my go to guy, my mentor, always there to help me work through anything, and when he didn’t know he would learn. He always wanted to learn. I am so lucky to have someone so special raise me and stick by my side day in and day out. I am so proud of him. Of all that he did for me, my brothers, my mother. I am so proud of him and all of his hard work creating his legacy in us and cheering us on. Even after long days at work, rushing home to catch our little league games, and be there for dinner—every night. And fighting for us, all the way to the end. He beat the prediction of every doctor and I am so proud that he got to see me graduate and cheer me on all the way. Right to the end he fought, he never gave up. Dad, thank you for everything. Thank you for your advice, late night chats, great music, wise jokes, and guiding tips. Thank you for being my dad. This is my dad. He passed away one year ago today. I have this photo of him on my desk. It reminds me of his “ramrod integrity”, as described by Andrew Clark in his obituary of him. He’d retired by the time I was born, but he remained active, aware and sharp until the very end. He swam in the ocean almost daily. Prepared his meals. There was a sense he’d live forever. As a family, we were lucky to experience that. Still, losing him ripped the roots out from under us all. I have not figured out how to live easily with this yet. But that is OK. Back to the simple days. I look at this pic and see my old 870 express that my folks got me for Christmas. I also see an old Avery sticker. I think about the start to the old videos “Avery, makin 5 o’clock Friday, even better” and it just brings me back to a different time. A time where carrylite shells were the real deal and a FA layout blind was home for the weekend. Above that an old Foiles Migrators sticker. I remember Jeff gave me a signed copy of Fallin Skies 7 for my birthday at game fair and sang happy birthday on a duck call. I look at my younger brothers and think back to when we would get the first bird which was usually a lone Rossie or juvy of some sort and they would fight for who got to hold it. After a long time weighing our options weve decided to finally leave San Francisco. We’re headed to Berlin, a place Ive loved for ages and have been planning on moving to for a while now. We love SF and California but after 6+ months of being isolated from family/friends, the music industry being hobbled by the pandemic, and having a son thats rapidly approaching two years old, we need more space, more family, and its just become clear that its time for something new. (And for those wondering HOW Im able to do this with the travel ban - having a wife and son who are German citizens definitely helps). Im excited for whats next and all the new opportunities of Berlin, but sad to be leaving all the people and places and art and magic that has kept me here for 13 years. We always imagined growing old here and we still want to. Weve made some lifelong friends here - people who are more family than friends even - and we’re going to miss all of you. But are already hatching plans to return for work, music making, and fun in the coming year as long as travel allows it. Were definitely not done with this city by any stretch of the imagination. We leave in a week and will be driving an RV across the country to visit my parents in Chicago before heading on to Berlin. SO excited to see our families again. Thankfully because of social media Ill be able to stay in touch with you all as always, especially given that most of us arent seeing each other these days anyway. All my love to everyone whos been part of my life since I got here. And if youre a close friend well probably talk more now that ever cuz Im gonna miss you all and be thinking of you more than ever. Just roasting each other endlessly for thirty years. Its the only photo i have with him. Our farms first generation, Dale Peterson (pictured on the left), arrived in Cannon Falls in 1939 ready to do what he loved – grow free-range turkeys. Having studied poultry science in college, Dale was looking for a location ideally suited for his turkey farm. He found that land in the rolling hills of the Little Cannon River Valley – land we still call home today. Shortly after, Dale married Fern, and together they fostered a family farm that still proudly bears their name. Our farm is now managed by our second and third generations. Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) has wrapped up their participation in the #German 🇩🇪 exercise GEREX in the Baltic Sea 🌊 The exercise, lead by the Commander of the German 1 Flotilla, brought together several assets from different NATO countries. During several days at sea, a vast ensemble of naval training was conducted focused mainly on surface, subsurface and above-water warfare. The presence of 🇩🇪 FGS U33 submarine was of high value to train and improve SNMG1 skills in anti-submarine warfare areas. Robert and Susan, family to our buildings original owner, have been sharing some fun photos and facts with us lately! Theyre thrilled to know that the place has a new life, and were thrilled to share a little history behind 1504 Champan.⠀ ⠀ 🏭 It was built in 1948 by Frank Schneider to house Acme Pattern Works⠀ 🏭 They constructed casks, or molds, to make items ranging from valves to manhole covers, for all different sizes, shapes, materials and industries⠀ 🏭 Franks company even made castings for Earl Campbells running pads because no one else made them large enough⠀ 🏭 They built the place out of concrete blocks to keep it cool; there would be too much dust and too many workers to bother with A/C⠀ 🏭 It was the largest pattern shop in the state in its time; you had to go to Alabama to find larger⠀ 🏭 Houstons main switch yard used to be right across the street, where the apartments are now; full of trains and movement and constant noise⠀ ⠀ Thank you to Robert and Susan for sharing a bit of history with us, and for giving our little brewpub your blessing! We bring you the sad news that John Bryant, former president of Thames and member for over fifty years, died last night. A note from his son Matthew: Thank you to all members of Thames who were part of his times with the club - you brought him friendship, competition, laughter and many, many good evenings of conversation, and occasionally song. If he had an epitaph it might well be: To run with the Hare and Hounds was his pride and his joy, to sport the old saltire and to race like a boy, for when the sun shone on his saltire his joy knew no bounds, so lets all drink good health to the Thames Hare and Hounds. 1. Varsity Match dinner menu with John speaking as Oxford Captain. 1966 Quite simply, John Bryant was one of the great Thames men, giving over 50 years of unstinting service to the club. He joined Thames in 1967 straight from Queen’s College, Oxford. While at Oxford, he competed 3x in the Tortoises-Spartans cross-country race, and once in the 3,000SC varsity at White City. At Thames, he was vice-captain from 1972-73 and then club captain for four seasons from 1973 until 1977, and served as our seventh President from 2010-15. On the competitive front, he was one of our foremost runners during the 1970s and early-1980s when we started to emerge as a competitive force in local and regional competition. In 1976 he was one of the scoring six (who coincidentally had all been involved in the 1966 Varsity Match) when we pulled off an unheralded second place in the Southern Cross-Country Championships at Parliament Hill. Professionally, John was a journalist and worked for The Daily Mail, The Times, The Sunday Correspondent and The European, concluding his career as Editor of The Daily Telegraph. As well as his London Marathon history, he produced a number of books on athletics, including 3:59.4: The Quest to Break the 4 Minute Mile; The Marathon Makers; and Chris Brasher: The man who made The London Marathon. - @thameshh on Instagram

Happy Veterans Day to all of our Veterans. My grandfather, the son of an illegal immigrant. Enlisted January 13, 1943, at age 21. Served at a forgotten airstrip in the English countryside for Allied Bombers flying into Europe. Got a Union job out of the service that he kept for 30+ years. No five draft deferments in our family. Drawn by the beauty of the sea, many people long to live on the coast. However, in the past, settling on the coast was a matter of survival. 🌊 • The seas were alive with fish, provided seaweed to help fertilise the fields, and seawater evaporated in salt pans to produce salt for preserving and flavouring food. The most successful settlements grew into thriving trading ports. 🐟 • More recently, times have been challenging for coastal communities. On this day in 1995 @warchilduk released an album of songs specially recorded and donated by some great artists of the time - Oasis, Massive Attack, Portishead, The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, Paul Weller, Suede, Manic Street Preachers, Sinead O’Connor, The Boo Radleys and Blur.... in aid of the charity which existed to help children affected by war. The whole album was recorded and put together in a week, a great achievement. Today the record has been made available for the first time to stream and download. It’s called ‘Help’ and will be the first thing you’ll find after the Beatles album on Spotify. The day of launch a party was held at the Hanover Grand for all the artists. I went along and built a little pop up studio. These portraits of Oasis and Noel Gallagher with Tim Burgess of The Charlatans were done that night. I’ve always cherished my physical copy from the time. Check it out. It’s a great record to rediscover.
