A few days ago I had the pleasure of interviewing Esther May Campbell about her project Scrapbook: Ventures in the Photographic Playground for B+W Photography magazine. The project is a collaboration between Esther and the children and staff of St Paul’s Adventure Playground in Bristol. With the help of fellow artists and play workers, Esther established a weekly photo-club on site, and encouraged children to play around with cameras and the idea of photography itself. The work is energising, inspiring and, at times, moving. The participants took cameras apart, leapt off climbing frames while firing away and broke every technical ‘rule’ in the book. As Esther explains, ‘SCRAPBOOK is a portal into the world of make-believe and risk, upside-downing and world building, destruction and creation and all the joys of play.’ After talking with Esther I was totally inspired, which led me to buy The Photographer’s Playbook (edited by Jason Fulford and Gregory Halpern) and head to the light pad for a play. Orbital belongs to the 2002 portfolio of twenty-three etchings titled “In a Spin: The Action of the World on Things, Volume I” - Hirst’s first attempt to transform his concept of spin drawings and paintings into the print medium. For this series of etchings he attached copperplates to the machine and drew on them as they spun with needles, screwdrivers, and other sharp tools, in a performance-like ritual that lasted for several days. I need to communicate the here and now. I realised that you couldnt use the tools of yesterday to communicate todays world. Pottery and Brain Health. KINTSUGI is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with Gold. It is something we have done for a few years now with @janethepotter beautiful pots. When @chrismaslin is not running the Sauce section he is our KINTSUGI master. Collecting any chipped or broken pots and mending them and making them even more beautiful than before. For me this is more than a practical way of fixing pots but a powerful image. Showing that something can be broken but be fixed again. This year has been terrible and people are struggling more than ever with their Brain Health. Let these images be a symbol. Sometimes we break down and that’s okay but we also need to know that we can be fixed again. Our Mental Health doesn’t have to define us we can be fixed better than before. Чтобы сделать красивые фотографии мне понадобилось 3 дня. ⠀ 1 день был полным крахом. Вы видели в сториз, что я сильно расстраивалась и поэтому ещё больше не получалось. Всё, что я сфоткала в тот день, категорически не соответстветствовало моим представлениям о фото в моем профиле. Загвоздка в чем? Если все сразу продать, то нечего потом будет фоткать. Перед продажей хотелось сделать прям что-то такое новое совершенно для меня и моего инстаграм. Я устала от одинаковых фото тарелок и мисок на одном и том же фоне и с одними и теми же ветками. В это день я поняла, что насмотренности недостаточно и провела вечер в поисках референсов на пинтересте. ⠀ Утром 2 дня я поехала в магазин Картон, где купила листы трех разных цветов, чтобы были разного цвета фоны. В этот день я уже была настроена сделать хорошие фото. Может настроение сказалось или полная неудача предыдущего дня, не знаю. Но вот тогда то все и получилось. Конечно я не сочиняла кадры сама. Я копировала фото из пинтереста, используя тот реквизит, что был у меня под рукой. Здесь я поняла, кстати, что реквизита недостаточно и я составила список того, что нужно постепенно докупить, чтобы было что положить рядом с тарелками. ⠀ На 3 день я фоткала наличие. Тут я обычно вообще не парюсь. Просто ставлю рядом предметы, кладу что-то маленькое чтобы разбавить кадр и хоп, фоткаю на телефон и сразу же выкладываю с ценами. И вот в этот день у меня тоже вышло пару классных кадров которые будут ещё красоваться у меня в профиле! ⠀ Какой вывод? Можно и нужно приглашать фотографа для того, чтобы отснять посуду. Особенно если вы делаете одинаковые вещи уже достаточно долго и планируете повторять изделия. Если бы не мой спортивный интерес и любовь к фото, я бы так и делала. Работа фотографа - тяжёлый труд, знаете ли. Это вам знаете, не посуду на гончарном круге крутить!😄 ⠀ Список опубликую, если наберём 400 лайков на фотку. Today marks the day I will be doing my final bisque firing in my Prahran kiln. I am feeling quite sentimental as I remember all the good years I’ve had making pottery for my store in Melbourne. My future firings will take place in our South Gippsland studio @thepotterslodge, which has been a dream for a decade. It was time to move the studio to provide more space in our stock room for our little growing business, whilst also allowing me uninterrupted time when I’m in the studio. For those who are new to us, wheel thrown pottery is how I started my business back in 2009. I lost my work as a freelance event producer and stylist in the 2008-9 global financial crisis. Took up a short course in pottery to pass the time while I worked out what to do. Then I stumbled across a century old shopfront for lease when I was looking for a flat to rent.. After 50 job application rejections I decide to it was time to hire myself and have a crack at starting my own studio. With very little money I put my skills and passion into good use and decided I would work as hard as I could to make sure I never had to write another CV or sit through a job interview ever again. I had a 20 year plan to build a solid business, a community, and a lifestyle. And here we are 11 years on. Thanks for following our store, our journey, and being a part of our community. My favourite thing I learnt about the vulva is the vestibule. It’s the bit inside the labia where your urethra (where wee comes out) and the vaginal opening are. It also houses the Skene’s glands either side of your urethra and your Bartholins glands near your vaginal opening. Both these glands help with lubricating your vulva. The Skene’s glands can release a milky substance when you orgasm, sort of thought of as the female ejaculate. This doesnt happen to everyone though so dont worry if it doesnt happen to you. The vestibule is hairless, usually a bit moist and quite delicate. It’s similar to the skin inside your vagina so it needs the protection of your labia and pubic hair to keep it safe. I think I just love the idea of a vestibule, like a little area to hang out in. It seems safe and warm and cosy. And who doesn’t want to be somewhere safe and warm and cosy? Also process below. The creative process is what I enjoy most about cooking. I’ve searched to see if these were ever done before and the fact that I may have innovated and created something new in culinary is nothing short of amazing to me and extremely gratifying. Thank you all so much for the amazing response👍👍. Tag me on whatever you use them, I would love to see your creations using the Stained Glass Chips. Process: 1- Slice pears and kiwi using a mandoline, 1.0-1.5mm and using a sharp knife cut thin slices of strawberries and blueberries (Barlett Pears are my choice). Also choose pears that are ripe but still firm enough to slice. 2- place pear slices on a baking sheet and on top of them, lay the other fruits. 3- bake at 200F-93C with another silpat and baking sheet on top, for about 20-25 minutes until fruits have soften and become translucent. 4- carefully remove the top silpat and lower oven temperature to 175F-80C. Arrange any fruits that may have moved. 5- keep chips in the low temp oven until completely dehydrated, 1:30-2:00 hours. 6- Remove from oven and let them cool. 7- remove chips carefully as they will be paper thin. - Chips should be kept in airtight container to maintain crispness or if they soften over time they can be popped back in low temperature oven and they will crisp up again. - @spreadit.store on Instagram

This is the first time that we had a decent yield from our two hazels. In the past, I could only find a few small nuts and many empty ones. This year I collected 1.6 kg of hazelnuts (including the shells), so there should be around 1 kg of kernels.⁠ ⁠ To ensure a better yield, I cut a few of the weaker branches to leave each hazel with 8-12 stronger ones. Throughout the spring and the summer, I kept removing thin long hazel shoots that keep growing at the center of the bush. This ensures less energy being spent on the young leaves and more energy going into fruits.⁠ ⁠ At the heart of the experiment was urine. I collected my own pee and poured it approximately twice a week around each of the hazel bushes. Making the most of elderberries! Here I’ve used elderberries from France and elderberries collected from Shropshire to see if they are different. They have both been made with rain water which is soft water in an ongoing attempt to make a red that stays red as alkaline seems to push it purple. But also im on a quest to make all the possible shades I can from one main ingredient. Podría pensar el lector que se trata de un deja vù. Que es innecesario proponer una lectura otra en torno a un trabajo que tiene su analogía visual tan cercana. Y puede que lleve algo de razón en esto. Quien escribe pasó por un cuestionamiento similar al conocer que la obra de los hermanos Vilá no se producía a cuatro manos. Lo recuerdo bien: fue hace algunos años, en una exposición privada donde se exhibían, entre otras, las piezas fotográficas de estos artistas. La primera evidencia definía, a mi juicio, lo que inequívocamente parecía un trabajo a dúo (por entonces, esta tendencia volvía a ponerse de moda): los chicos llevaban el mismo apellido y las obras revelaban una misma sensibilidad estética. Pero no era así. Al preguntar supe que cada uno trabajaba en lo suyo y me dije que alguien mentía (reticencias de crítico pedante). No obstante, el tiempo se encargaría de convencerme de aquello. Los años me darían la oportunidad de cruzar nuestros trabajos: me impliqué en la curaduría de dos exposiciones con estos chicos. Ambas sobre fotografía. Ambas igual de buenas. Y de esa experiencia surgió una conclusión: si bien estos dos se apoyan en lo fotográfico, hay uno que ya comienza a despertar en otro lenguaje: el video arte. Se trata de Carlos. Aquella muestra que hicimos, ¿Dónde estoy yo? Homenaje a las masas (2017), reflexionaba en torno a la masa como signo público y desfiguración del individuo. Desde luego, tenía algo de suspicacia política sin llegar a ser tendenciosa. Leía en las consecuencias más que en los hechos mismos. Era minimal en su escenografía, y en cambio no dejaba de impactar al visitante. Carlos, con mucho atino, supo aprovechar cada centímetro vivo de pared y logró una lección de síntesis expresiva. Según lo veo, fue para él un salto de edad. Quedémonos con lo esencial: la abstracción (vista desde las masas) seguía siendo el motivo, aunque el discurso se potenciaba de otra manera. THINGS ARE CHANGING! It has been a few mad, intense months full of late nights, back to back firings and on some days, I literally couldnt feel my limbs. And July seems no different! It got to a point where I had to give you guys a lead time of 2 months for your orders and it got so overwhelming that I decided to officially stop taking new orders last month. In this madness, I realised I need to take a step back, analyse and re-structure a few things. So to make things easier and faster for you guys, Ive decided that I will be doing monthly Shop Updates. These shop updates will contain a mix of your favourite products and some new ones! I will make a batch of select items every few weeks and everything thats ready will be put up. (Food Photographers - dont you worry, every update will have a section especially for you guys!) This will make the process much faster and smoother and you wont have to wait for months :) This format will also allow me to bring some exciting new things to you every now and then as well. Believe me when I say, Ive had things I wanted to try and share with you all for over a year...but with all the on-going work, never got a chance to do that! It will also eliminate all the delays caused due to firing mishaps, glazes not behaving the way theyre supposed to and a lot more that is capable of going wrong with ceramics. Storytime. Twenty three years ago, I had only 7 years experience in pottery at the time. I had just purchased a house with my now ex wife and our nearby Red River of the North started to flood. The sudden melt of 120 some inches of accumulated winter snow fed the river from huge prairie lands of Minnesota and North Dakota. The newscasters made increasingly alarming flood predictions. The towns started organizing sand bag filling and positioning of bags as citizens volunteered. Lots of neighbors came out, it was an emergency and we did the work that we could do and prepared knowing the citys plan and the predictions coming from officials. We couldnt just listen to the news and not be working towards a solution. Fargo and Moorhead made it through in good shape from that flood. They said it was a 500 year flood but its been every few years since. When the waters receded I found a pile of fine clay by a path along the river, close to home. I took about 25 pounds of clay home in my back pack. I mixed it with some ash from my woodstove and made these bottles. I had to put the glaze on a freshly thrown piece to get it to stick. Here is a #mold called Aspergillus chevalieri on two different plate types. In fact the two agar recipes are almost identical and uniquely, they both have 20% sucrose for growth. The difference? Caterpillar of the Day Follow Along: Weekend Days 260/261⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Meet the Maple Looper Caterpillar, Parallelia bistriaris.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The maple looper is easily overlooked, both as a frosted green early instar resting along maple leaf veins, and as a striated brown or gray final instar pressed against twigs and bark. Still, I have found them to be one of the most common caterpillars on summertime maples and a quick shake of a branch over a white sheet often produces a few. Careful with common names like looper which has been applied to caterpillars from at least three major moth families. The maple looper is in the family Erebidae, related to moths like underwings and Zales, and not at all related to the inchworm or vegetable patch loopers.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Raising caterpillars often yields surprises - things you would never discover through outdoor observation alone. Immediately after the maple looper pupates, the fresh pupa is smooth and dark brown like many others, but within hours it develops a thick frosty white powder across its entire surface. Amulets for excess fortune (2020) Resin, copper, nickel, 3D printing Series of 12 sculptures (3/12) #sneakpeak #contemporaryart #process #digitalfabrication #wavingcat #manekineko #smallformat #3dprinting #metalcasting These series of small sculptures began in the residency @3331artschiyoda I participated in earlier this year in Tokyo. They were born out of trying to understand how nature and machines coexist in a hyper-industrial context. Long-story short, after a few weeks I noticed a particular obsession with cats, such as the Maneki-Neko (and so I travelled to many cat temples and pet a lot of cats), but interestingly, I noticed the role of that myths and legends play in the consolidation of hierarchical narratives that allow for the sustained nature-technology binary at the core of modern thought. The metaphor of the cat became very present, my cat passed away while I was abroad, and their representation throughout japanese art-history was frequently linked to notions of protection, fortune, and abundance. I scanned a gõtokuji temple cat ceramic, and began mirroring it. Making different combinations using strategies of repetition and dramatization to produce some sorts of new amulets. These felt quite honest, they appeared to be the logical conclusion of my observations: hyper-industrial amulets for excess fortune. Nature carrying the weight of our expectations, through strategic romantization. The formal notion of the waving cat dissolved into these organic, virus-looking structures. I cant quite put in words yet, but their resulting aesthetic hints at the consequences of radically manipulating nature. I feel the curent context has made me look at them with refreshed eyes. You know, you always hear about those crazy curve balls that life throws at you, but I never really understood the expression. Im a big planner and have always tried to be prepared for every possibility. I had never been caught 100% off-guard by life before. That is.... until about a month ago. • • My husband and I were thinking we pretty much had our life planned out when I learned that he was sick and being sent home early from his military training to recover. So, long story short, we have said goodbye to our six year plan and our stable future with little things like health insurance and free housing 😅 • • But I have to say that even though we are giving up a lot, I am really grateful. And I swear thats not a line. I really, genuinely mean it. For A LOT of reasons. Im grateful that I have family around who supports us. Im grateful that my husband wont be in danger for work anymore. But mostly, Im really grateful for a fresh start. Ive changed and grown a lot in the last few years and feel like I am more prepared now than ever to choose the type of life I want to live with confidence. While I think we would have been fine on our previous path, now we have the freedom to redesign our lives together. And thats really exciting. • • My hubby comes home tomorrow (YAY 🎉) and it will be the first time Ive gotten to see him--or really talk to him--in two months. To say Im excited is an understatement! It will be a busy, stressful, and exciting time for us. • • P.S. My husband knows I bought a pottery wheel but doesnt know that I made 50 of these pinch pots today.
