#THROWBACK Was thinking of posting something else entirely, but since this week’s major highlights has been really ALL about work so far, might as well do a Thursday throwback entry (slash reflection). This is about where I miss being stationed to do my rotational workshifts pre-Covid. The remote facility has been my preferred work-scene since I set foot on it way back in January 2012. You may consider that long time ago, but take my word for it that there are amazing folks who has been there for ridiculously much longer to which I had (and still have) the great privilege of working with. Don’t be fooled by the kind of immaculate sunrise and sunset photos you can capture over there because it’s absolutely not always sunshine and rainbows and i mean that literally and figuratively (lol). To be honest, you’ll only see the real rainbow after completing your 14-day straight shift and likely when you’re already on the plane off home. 😅 However despite the constant challenge it brings in every shift, it is honest days of hard and fulfilling work. I won’t speak on behalf of everyone over there, but personally, every shift I get to complete was simply a rewarding experience. The group photo isn’t mine but I was tagged on it nearly a year ago now. I decided to use it as I miss being around them. The photo belongs to the camera of one of the most kind, clever, and funniest guy to be around with, Mr. Juan Panama (He’s the fella behind me 😆). This was just half of the awesome gang I get to bug for work tasks whenever I was on shift during that time. If you must ask why the smiling faces (and if i recall it correctly), we were teasing our Construction Manager of how proud we were as a group on having the coffee machine on that ‘particular spot’ of the office trailer. MEALS ON WHEELS / Symbolising the start of a new era (or so we hope). The @canababes kitchen which weve inhabited for nearly 6 years became ours in January. We started renovating the place becuase it was pretty run down and then within 1 month eveything started to change. Covid-19 hit. Jobs cancelled, slowly at first then, then in waves. Until there was all but one confirmed job for the year and the reality that we might not come back from this set in. It has been a really tough time. Weve had to put staff on furlough, beg for money from the council, plea on national news and set up a whole new business model. All the while, carrying on with the renovations. Because theres no point in having a kitchen if it isnt in a state where you can make food 🔧🛠⚔ 5 weeks ago the first change happened. @emilybeardface and I decided in a bid to save the business and help keep suppliers in trade, we would set up The Chefs Basket. A chef quality produce-delivery service for people who love cooking and want great ingredients to their door. Coming up to week 4 now, we have lots of return customers and people seem to be getting real value from them 🙌 We also welcomed in @drew_wolf who also without a job decided now was the time to start making his perfected hot sauce or in his case @thekoldsauce 🌶. It is SO delicious. Finally today we welcomed in @jacko2111 who has single handedly set up a 3 times weekly dinner dash to get much needed food to vulnerable people in real need all across Hackney and Stokey, Dalston, Clapton and Holloway. With the help of @chefjamesjfox & Rogan of @perch.n16 who smashed out a casual 440 meals today😆. It was such a great feeling to see the building back in use. For a really good cause. Then with the help of @rebelclash @mareefeathers and a team of incredible driver and bicyclist volunteers who whisked away the food to the people who need it. THANKYOU ALL! 💛 Its our hope that ALL these venture continue long past Covid-19 and that good is coming out of such a strange time. Please visit @perch.n16 and donate to their GoFundMe. Just to give you all perspective on what it’s like to drive through the Willamette Valley growing area RIGHT NOW, these videos were taken between 9:15-10am on my way to Portland from @walterscottwines (sunrise was 6:45am). They show the dramatic shift from the shroud of a Satanic smoke cloud to clear blue skies. . As power finally came on yesterday, I was able to get enough charge on my electric car to make it to the next station this morning; unfortunately through the 5th circle of hell that many winemakers are harvesting in currently. . This is just too dystopian for words. As you watch the horizon line in these videos, and the light at the end of the tunnel grows, let that imagery mirror our resolve to do better for this planet. Today was a little different than I anticipated. 11 weeks ago I signed up for my first 10k. I started the Couch to 10k program on the treadmill @workoutanytimeellijay. 5-6 days a week I went to the gym to be ready for the @cooperriverbridgerun today. I’m thankful today was a beautiful day for the run here in N GA (alone in a park), but a little sad I couldn’t be with my family running the race together in Charleston. Today is World Alzheimer’s Day The pain of watching someone that you love struggle with this awful disease is the kind of pain that hurts your heart. It’s the pain of grieving the loss of a person while they are still alive. It’s pain of not wanting to lose them, while simultaneously wishing that their suffering would end. Today I am sending love to the many people around the world who know this pain firsthand. When my Dad was still here, I shared a lot about his struggle and I had so many people reach out to me to tell me how much it touched them. So today, I am spending time honoring my sweet Daddoo by continuing to work on a book of short stories that I am writing about his life, my life and his dementia. I believe that in sharing our stories, we can remove the stigma and shame that surrounds this disease. This afternoon, the Germantown Fire Department received a call to assist a cat that had been stuck in a tree for three days. Truck 41/A Shift was dispatched to assist the cat with his decent. When the crew arrived on the scene, they spotted to a medium sized, black and white cat in a small tree. The crew used a roof ladder to slowly ascend up the tree. After gaining the cat’s trust, they were able to grab the cat and descend from the tree. After the rescue, the cat appeared uninjured and was released. Food pushers. We know them. We ARE them 😶 When I first started running long distance, I’d always be so excited for the “afterparty”. Pizza, donuts, beer(s). It’s just a part of ultrarunning life I’d never say no to a snack or a drink offered by a friend. “You earned it”. “Come on, live a little”. “You gotta have fun sometimes”. And if I declined a donut and a beer, I’d be standing there, feeling deprived. Deprived of the taste, the smell, the discussion of how great and delicious it is, the jokes everyone shared after a drink or two (or five). What I didn’t realize is that by EATING it and drinking it I was depriving myself of other, more important things. I was depriving myself of faster recovery, feeling energy instead of feeling sluggish, good night of sleep. I was depriving myself of becoming a better, faster, stronger athlete. And I am so guilty of that too - pushing food and drinks on others. If I did that to you - I am sorry. Not that you should never have a donut - you totally should, but that said donut should NOT get in the way of your goals and sabotage your progress. Plan it well and enjoy it, but don’t be afraid to grow a pair and say “No thanks” if it doesn’t fit into your plan. So if I ever say “no thanks” to a snack or drink you offer me, please remember - it’s not about you. It’s about me.
