DEAR FRESHERS .... these came up on my snapchat memories from this time 4 years ago (4 YEARS AGO?!) the day I started out as a fresher. I can literally remember the feeling of walking into my room so so well, saying goodbye to my parents and just being like wow here we go!!!!!!! The last photo was the last day of freshers and it was my birthday, I remember waking up crying just wanting to be at home but I got up and actually had the best day with my new friends!! If I’m honest I found freshers very hard, from the first day I had already organised to go home in 2 weeks so I knew I had safety and something to look forward to BUT it gets better, stick with it, push through all the emotions... it’s worth it I promise ❤️ My top tips when I was feeling low was to remind myself EVERYONE is in the same situation, be bold and go and make new friends. It’s a very odd feeling coming out of school and having to make friends again but even the smallest comment, I told a girl I liked her nails in a lecture and she was my friend through the whole of uni!!! Another top tip is move your body, if your feeling anxious, nervous and just don’t want to leave your room then sign up for the gym, go for a run or a walk. Ask the person on your corridor or course to join you!! And finally... if freshers isn’t the best week of your life or your watching Instagram stories of your other friends having ‘the best time ever’ then don’t paint a picture of your whole uni experience to be like that. Give your body chance to adjust to all of these new surroundings, life and people, give it a chance and I promise it will get better. 10 years ago I started my journey with an amazing company named OPI. I learned so much and I hope that I brought them just as much creativity and loyalty for a decade!! Although at the moment I am not teaching at a school or for a brand, I am always an educator and a student for life. I am so grateful for where OPI took me and where that journey will lead me to next. From teaching groups of 75 or more, to working with high profile guests/celebrities, HSN TV, to fashion weeks all over except for Paris. (That’s on my list ha) I was able to do it all while having kids and breastfeeding on the road. I will always be grateful and you never know what’s next. Today marks 1 month since I was featured on NBC’s the TODAY show for the She Made It segment! It feels like it happened a lifetime ago. So much has happened since that first initial email and phone call with the producers. The goal was to feature women owned businesses during COVID. Then, shortly after, in the blink of an eye, the world had an uprising. Before this happened we had only had one pandemic to worry about. Despite it all the producers Phoebe, April, and Ashley were making things happen remotely. I want to give a heartfelt thanks to them and their team for doing what they do and for including me in this momentous occasion. Special shoutout to Jill as well she’s a legend and did such an awesome job. Thank you. Other than my initial post the day before I haven’t mentioned it much. I have been working very long days as well as nights to pull this off as smoothly as possible. I certainly couldn’t have done it as quickly as I had without help. My small business of one for handfuls of years had to go through some growing pains to fulfill all the orders. Things changed in an instant. Thankful to my family and those close to me for their support. Whether that was emotional support to cheer me on, comfort my soul, or doing groundwork to prep orders. They showed up. I am looking forward to seeing how Coco and Seed will continue to grow, it’s been one heck of a ride so far. 2020 has been a tough but clarifying year. Assistant Professor of Pediatrics Dwi Kemaladewi, PhD, only joined UPMC Children’s in 2019. Yet, already she’s making a name for herself. With a big smile and contagious enthusiasm about her work, it’s easy to understand why. Appointed a Mellon Scholar by the hospital’s Richard King Mellon Institute for Pediatric Research and a recipient of a 2019 Children’s Trust grant, Dr. Kemaladewi has built a career around investigating pediatric rare diseases. She studies a debilitating, deadly form of muscular dystrophy called muscular dystrophy type 1A (MDC1A). Kids with MDC1A have mutations in the LAMA2 gene that cause their muscles and other bodily functions to shut down. Children diagnosed with MDC1A lose the ability to walk, and sadly, many do not make it to their teens. Dr. Kemaladewi and her colleagues wondered whether they could improve therapies for patients with MDC1A using genetic technologies. So, they set to work studying a gene called LAMA1. LAMA1 is closely related to LAMA2, but only active in utero. Using cutting-edge CRISPR gene-editing, Dr. Kemaladewi and her collaborators “switched on” LAMA1 in mouse models with MDC1A. The results? Amazingly, the mice given the therapy demonstrated markedly improved motor function and decreased paralysis! While more work needs to be done, Dr. Kemaladewi is characteristically optimistic. “Generating new scientific knowledge is endlessly rewarding,” she grins. “But ultimately, I just want to be able to help these kids and families.” - @wishnubagoesoka on Instagram

We were contacted around 11.30 this morning by a nurse from regional health. They let us know there had been a customer at the shop on Wednesday the 5th somewhere around 5.30pm to 7pm. We were told this was a low risk, casual contact who was asymptomatic at the time. This was all done over the phone, both myself and Tsubasa spoke to this nurse in seperate calls to get advice on what we should do. We followed and are still following this advice. We have attached a copy of the email and letter we have since received. We were surprised to hear about the denial at today’s press conference as we were informed it would be included. Since then we have received many messages of love and support, which we value highly. Unfortunately some feel the need to make unhelpful and hurtful comments, this is not what our staff deserve. WHY is curly/textured hair excluded from the curriculum? Anyone that’s attended cosmetology school, haven’t you ever wondered why curly hair mannequins are nowhere to be found? Why are schools across the country setting students up to fail black communities? Black students attend school and learn how to work with straight hair, yet see no representation of themselves there. White hairdressers-When/IF a black person sits in your chair to be serviced, do you know what to do? Does texture intimidate you because you aren’t familiar with working on it? What are some words you say to yourself to justify the reason you aren’t skilled with this hair type? Do you actively avoid or hope you don’t see a black client because you are scared to look like you don’t know what you’re doing? Have you ever accepted a client and used the “fake it till you make it” aphorism? (🙏Please don’t ever do that.) Have you taken it upon yourself to seek out education beyond school to learn about working with this hair type? It is extremely important to our moral character that we ask ourselves these questions. As a hairdresser, it is VITAL and should be normalized that you are equipped with the knowledge to be able to give service to anyone, with a strong foundation of education. This is a complex issue, addressing hundreds of years of oppression, and I encourage you to do your hair history homework. Our paper is out today (link in bio)! This is my first research-focused first-author pub and I am *so* excited to finally get to share this! A big thank you to my advisors and co-authors George Perry and Mary Shenk! Scholars have long noticed the uneven distribution of scientific efforts in studying certain species. Some species tend to get studied over and over, while some remain critically understudied. Well, why is this the case? We wanted to ask this question using specifically non-human primates and especially in relation to genomic sequence data, since technological and methodological advances within genomics have been exploding within the last decade. So we asked: what factors are influencing what non-human species get studied specifically within genomics and the generation of sequence data? We investigated factors such as IUCN Red List status, prior history of publication, importance in the med literature, and more. We also interviewed scientists that generated these data in order to understand their perspectives. We then compared the factors we hypothesized to be important in the decision to study certain species and the interviews we conducted. FYI mixed-methods research is awesomeeeee (and I will be conducting more for my dissertation)! What did we find? First, only ~20% of all non-human primates have any genomic data and of alllllll the genomic sequence data available, ~75% of those data are only from 5 species! Our mixed-methods approach found that authors tend to select species that: have samples that are readily accessible, have a long history of being published on, and are important to further understanding humans, especially human diseases. That seems rather obvious considering what we know about scientific research, so why does this matter? What this tells us is that these patterns have the potential to constrain further research on species that are consistently understudied, especially those that are non-model organisms! We may be missing out on really critical info about non-human primates because of this especially those that would benefit from these data in terms of their conservation. The paper is *open access*! I DID IT 🥳 After 81 days of studying for 8-12 hours a day, passing the 1st exam, failing the next (by 1 freaking point), passing the 3rd exam, and then retaking/passing the 2nd exam this morning.. I’ve finally completed all of my securities industry exams (SIE, Series 6, and the Series 63) needed to start in my new position at ADP working in retirement services. So much time, stress, tears, & sacrifice came with getting this license - I’ve gotten my Property & Casualty license, and my health insurance license, but NOTHING compares to the securities industry exams - SO INTENSE. Just so happy to be done & finally be able to get back to normalcy and build a new routine in this new position. Nothing worth having EVER comes easy. You have to work for that shit. But, there’s no better feeling than accomplishing a goal you set out for yourself.
