P.A.T. Lens Charts Stéphane Paillard is a former Camera Operator and Camera Assistant who turned his sharp knowledge into a thriving business designing and supplying high-tech lens charts and essential accessories. His company P.A.T-Accessories (Prêt à Tourner—Ready to Shoot) is a few miles from the location where the Lumière Brothers shot The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station with their Cinematograph in 1895. P.A.T. charts let you check the resolution of a lens or the camera’s sensor. #PATAccessories, #PATLensCharts, #StéphanePaillard - @fdtimes on Instagram

Everything is determined by forces over which we have no control. It is determined for the insect as well as for the star. Human beings, vegetables, or cosmic dust - we all dance to a mysterious tune, intoned in the distance by an invisible piper. (Albert Einstein) Music is the pleasure the human mind experiences from counting without being aware that it is counting. (Gottfried Leibniz) The relationship between mathematics and music (vibrations / sound waves) is well known, and in hindsight it is obvious that mathematics, maths physics, music (sound waves) and musical instruments exist because matter is a wave structure of Space. This is why all matter vibrates and has a resonant frequency.🙂 #math_teacher_director #mathematicians #physicslover #physics #mathematicianquotes #physics_qa #maths_lover - @being_asolo_ship on Instagram

**THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL - PLEASE SEE NEXT POST FOR ADDITIONAL WORKSHOP. THANK YOU ALL!** To raise money for G.L.I.T.S., I will be teaching a two-part Introduction to Modular Synthesis (using Automatonism) online! @glits_inc is raising funds to buy two buildings to create a permanent place to house and support Black trans people in New York City. Sunday June 28th & Sunday July 5th $30 - 50 sliding scale. All money will be donated directly to @glits_inc - I will share the receipt **This will be geared towards beginners - no experience necessary.** - @felishaledesma on Instagram

Physicists Quiet the Quantum Whisper to Improve Gravitational Wave Detector Sensitivity Gravitational wave detectors have opened a new window to the universe by measuring the ripples in spacetime produced by colliding black holes and neutron stars, but they are ultimately limited by quantum fluctuations induced by light reflecting off of mirrors. LSU Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe, postdoctorsl fellow, NIST, and his team of LSU researchers have conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to cancel this quantum backaction and improve detector sensitivity. In a new paper in Physical Review X, the investigators present a method for removing quantum backaction in a simplified system using a mirror the size of a human hair and show the motion of the mirror is reduced in agreement with theoretical predictions. The research was supported by the National Science Foundation. Louisiana State University Ph.D. physics alumnus Jonathan Cripe has conducted a new experiment with scientists from Caltech and Thorlabs to explore a way to improve gravitational wave detectors’ sensitivity. Credit: LSU Despite using 40-kilogram mirrors for detecting passing gravitational waves, quantum fluctuations of light disturb the position of the mirrors when the light is reflected. As gravitational wave detectors continue to grow more sensitive with incremental upgrades, this quantum backaction will become a fundamental limit to the detectors’ sensitivity, hampering their ability to extract astrophysical information from gravitational waves. “We present an experimental testbed for studying and eliminating quantum backaction,” Cripe said. “We perform two measurements of the position of a macroscopic object whose motion is dominated by quantum backaction and show that by making a simple change in the measurement scheme, we can remove the quantum effects from the displacement measurement. Ever had an interaction in an ANOVA and then run the post-hoc but you can’t see the between group differences? Urgh, underpowered to see the effect, but the time effect shows something’s going on. That’s what happened in our paper here: https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/12/5/1235 Check out the deltas from rest in the potato protein group versus control. Clearly something going on, significant interaction (p=0.008), but only time-dependent effects. But, powerful message: the first ever demonstration that daily consumption of twice the RDA – from a plant-based protein – stimulates integrated MPS at rest and in a resistance exercised condition. I know it’s hard to wrap your mind around an ANOVA that shows that coveted significant interaction and then no difference between groups! Clearly some folks struggle with the concept and what these data mean. The true test of where these data go is to do a training study? My bet is that so long as you’re hitting 1.6 g/kg/d that the protein source could be plant or animal and it wouldn’t matter: the strength and hypertrophy gains would be the same! Higher leucine containing plant proteins like soy and potato protein isolate, heck even if eat enough of crummy plant protein like rice protein you can get enough leucine to stimulate MPS and hypertrophy to its maximum extent. We may test that thesis someday 😉 - @mackinprof on Instagram
