A new report by the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, provides new data and details that show the trade in African pangolins to Asia for traditional medicine continues to grow. Last year, not only were more pangolin scales seized globally than in any other year for which data is available, but it also saw the biggest individual seizures of pangolin scales on record. Within a single week in April, Singapore intercepted a 14.2-ton shipment and a 14-ton shipment, estimated to be from more than 70,000 pangolins. Chris Hamley, senior pangolin campaigner for @EIAEnvironment, says illegal trade may have increased because as smugglers have shifted from Asian pangolins to African ones, there was an existing supply chain they could co-opt. “In Africa, there was already the bushmeat trade chains that have pangolins, and so it was almost like a natural byproduct,” Hamley says. Glória (F4) the female jaguar who was rescued from our neighbors shed has been transferred from the animal hospital in Cuiaba to @nex_noextinction rehabilitation center in Corumbá Goiás. She was brought there to get stem cell treatment with hope of accelerating the healing process of her 3rd degree burns on all 4 of her paws. We are told she is already doing better then before she arrived, eating and drinking on her own. They hope the faster she heals the faster they can release her back into her home in the Pantanal. Sabías que... Perry el ornitorr... Digo, ornitorrinco Ornithorhynchus anatinus Hay gente que lo define como un castor con pico y patas de pato. Otros como una mezcla de mamífero, ave y reptil. Los europeos lo vieron por primera vez en 1798. Meses después se mandó la piel de un ejemplar a Inglaterra, para que los científicos lo estudiasen. Cuando les llegó a los naturalistas ingleses pensaron que se trataba de una broma o una falsificación. Taxonómicamente el ornitorrinco pertenece al orden de los monotremas. ¿Y qué son los monotremas? Pues son mamíferos ovíparos, que ponen huevos. Puede medir entre 30 y 60 centímetros de longitud y pesan entre 1 y 2,5 kilogramos los machos y 0,7 y 1,6 kilogramos las hembras. Tiene un pico ancho aplanado, en una cabeza relativamente pequeña. El pico está cubierto por piel lisa. Además, tiene abazones, como los hámsteres (son bolsas de piel en la boca utilizadas para guardar comida). Tiene unas patas cortas, palmeadas con dedos con largas uñas. Posee una cola ancha que se utiliza, entre otras cosas, como almacén de grasa. El ornitorrinco vive en Australia. Concretamente le podemos encontrar la zona este y en Tasmania. Excavan frecuentemente dos madrigueras diferenciadas. Una para las crías y otra para el macho y ella misma. Se trata de un mamífero semiacuático. Pese a que sus madrigueras están en tierra, pasa la mayor parte de su tiempo nadando, actividad para la cual está perfectamente preparado. Una nueva curiosidad del ornitorrinco: tiene en su pico unos electrorreceptores que utiliza para detectar a sus presas. Gracias a estos sensores son capaces de detectar los campos electromagnéticos que generan otros animales. Las hembras carecen de mamas con pezones (una rareza más, y van…). ¿Cómo dan de mamar entonces a las crías? Las glándulas mamarias segregan la leche que se transpira por los poros de la piel. Los machos tienen en las patas traseras un espolón que segrega veneno. No es el único mamífero venenosos, pero sí el único que no secreta el veneno a través de la mordedura. Su veneno es moderadamente tóxico. Es capaz de matar a mamíferos pequeños y en las personas produce diversas reacciones cutáneas. - @naturalezasalvaje_esp on Instagram
