A God holds my love and won’t let go, who knows as much as I do what it is, and maybe we don’t want the same things. A god keeps my love at the end of his palm and I a smokeless gaze, waiting for when it falls – when it falls, I do too. Maybe that’s where it comes from - fall. We stain ourselves with the clumsiness of cheap ink, and slip letters under our pillows and call it a dream. And maybe it is, the gods know better. Maybe all this patience is but me gasping each time I smudge away a little more love from my poems. Maybe this goes on till at last I reek of slow, sad ballads and you finally flinch. Maybe I wait for the sun to slip a little more yellow into this earth so like pretty omens you fall to find me - maybe fall then, is another word for my love breaking against yours and the gods turning their heads to see. II. Fall – burning ache in the yellow of the sun and calling it love, after Burning twigs and paper never feels enough, burning never feels enough, that is to say, burn a twig and you’ll look for more twigs, burn a piece of paper and you’ll look for more paper – burn a part of you and you’ll look for more places to burn at, more ways to love, that is. So love then, is but ache I put on fire, hoping for some warmth, but I forget we call such places pits. III. Fall – silences My silence breaks nobody - healing isn’t poetic, pain is, and poems don’t die. [La postérité d’Ingres : Hippolyte Flandrin] Hippolyte Flandrin (1809-1864), réalisa le portrait de son maître, Ingres, alors qu’il venait d’obtenir le Prix de Rome, juste avant son départ pour la Ville éternelle en 1833. Cet artiste fut lun des principaux propagateurs des théories d’Ingres. Il réalisa de beaux portraits dans une veine réaliste et poétique qui restituent une certaine austérité et une densité de la présence qui doivent beaucoup à Ingres, mais sans en avoir les fantaisies et les déformations. On peut reconnaître ces caractéristiques dans son Portrait de la comtesse de Goyon peint en 1853. Flandrin joua également un rôle important dans le programme de décoration déglises anciennes et modernes dans la seconde moitié du XIX° siècle, en compagnie d’autres élèves du Montalbanais. Ainsi en témoigne l’esquisse préparatoire de la tête de Saint Jean l’Evangéliste peint vers 1840 pour la décoration de l’église Saint-Séverin à Paris, exposée au musée. Le musée de Montauban conserve plusieurs de ses œuvres. “Earth is itself a canted color-wheel, a cycle of vegetable, mineral, animal, and atmospheric accommodations to the earth’s passage around the sun. The segment, the turn of the earth, that corresponds to brown in the northern hemisphere is autumn. Consider, for example, the brown field in autumn, the stubble field. In climates where winter is cold, the autumnal field represents at once Nature depleted and Nature bountiful. There is something about the indeterminacy of brown that lends itself to such paradox. She is the matronly season, Autumn, comfortable in her warm landscape. Ripe Autumn can nearly be heard to sigh: Here will I rest a bit, my bounty is suddenly very heavy. Her lids droop. Her smile is pleasantly hazy. Her days are shortening. But the sun is delicious. Isn’t the sun delicious? Thoughts turn to elegy and apples. Try one of these, she says.
