These portraits by an unknown artist depict Samuel and Emily Hart of Philadelphia. Samuel was the son of Michael Hart and Esther Cohen Hart of Easton, Pennsylvania. According to family tradition, he moved to Philadelphia and became a prominent lawyer and member of the Jewish community. His wifes name was Emily and one of his descendants was Charles Henry Hart, an important early historian of Colonial American painting and Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Malcolm H. I watched @ParisHiltons new documentary #ThisIsParis on YouTube, and it was not what I was expecting at all (in a good way). She shed light on a years-long traumatic time in her life that shaped who she was as a young adult and now a woman in her thirties (she still has almost daily nightmares about it). Several major themes in the doc include control, superstardom, lack of privacy and lack of sleep. The dynamic between her celebrity and family life is also at times hard to watch. Not because it isnt compelling, but because you really feel for her. One scene I found interesting in particular was when she was speaking with her sister Nicky about those dark times, Nicki asked if she had apologized to their parents for what happened to Paris in her teen years. I want to add that Nicky comes off as a very caring, understanding and real sister to Paris, but that moment kind of caught me off guard. I also flinched when Paris talked to her mom about this really troubling time, which her mom is indirectly and partly responsible for, and there didnt seem to be much of an apology. It was swept under the rug, as the Hilton sisters would probably say. Then I remembered #ParisHiltons recent interview with @BravoAndy where she talks about the control in #BritneySpears life, and how she couldnt imagine still having to deal with that for all these years. The documentary put context to those words. Did any of you watch it yet? What were your thoughts on Paris dueling public and private personas? What had happened to her? Erick, who painted the magnificent cover art is from Mexico, and Jesi who made the video for Justice lives and works in Mexico. I wanted the art to follow the path of the butterflies. We’ve been sending each other messages and images back and forth for months, and now the monarchs are here on Lake Erie again where I live, and the record is ready to share. I recorded it during monarch season last year; may the circle be unbroken. Wishing the monarchs a safe journey across this natural continent where they do not observe the chaos of manmade borders. I bought this dress last summer, picturing myself wearing it to church #Easter Sunday with flowers in my hair. This was the first Easter in my 31 years I wasn’t in church. And its simplicity was actually quite beautiful. My spiritual journey has taken me inward, in to my physical body as the temple of the Divine. This past Holy Week, I couldn’t stop thinking about the veil that was torn in two, symbolizing that humans no longer need to go into a building to meet with the Divine. The Divine can now be found in our bodies, in our nervous system, in the beauty of our instincts, our desires, our pleasures. I can’t stop thinking about our bodies as the temple, at a time when the entire world doesn’t have access to its physical temples. I’ve been moving away from the institution of religion & coming home to the Divine Source inside me. I wonder if the world is now being offered an invitation to do the same. This portrait of a young woman embodies the distinctive expression and resplendent detail of Nicholas Hilliard’s miniature paintings from the late Elizabethan period. The sitter’s unbound hair and her shimmery red silk gown, trimmed in a silver and velvety blue background, showcase the painter’s ability to capture an array of textures and minute details—the scale of which required a fine pointed brush composed of soft squirrel hairs. . A fair amount is known about sixteenth-century miniature painting, or “limning,” due to Hilliard’s own writing on the subject, a sort of how-to guide entitled “Treatise on the Art of Limning” (ca. 1600). Although Hilliard’s writing gives a clear account of his craft, technical study of his #miniatures reveal a great deal more, like how strictly he adhered to his own advice about using “the finest and purest colours.” . Recent analysis of this work using macro X-ray fluorescence scanning (MA-XRF) highlights the precision with which Hilliard applied paint. Each scan shows a map of where elements like gold, silver, and copper exist in the miniature. The vibrant blue behind the unknown “lady” sends a strong signal for copper, which corresponds to the costly pigment #azurite (shown in blue). One can see how crisply the blue pigment was applied along the contours of the sitter’s sleeves and the thicker locks of hair, leaving an empty space for those passages. Among the final details added to the portrait were subtle touches of ground gold leaf, called shell gold, on the woman’s earring and along the oval edge of the vellum support. . MA-XRF analysis was conducted by Richard Hark, conservation scientist @yaleipch; technical study and photo details by #conservator Polly Saltmarsh. .
