Seated Child with Crossed Arms (1903) by Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907). 📌📌📌 Modersohn-Becker was a German painter and one of the most important representatives of early expressionism. Unfortunately, her brief career was cut short at the age of 31, when she died of postpartum embolism. 📌📌📌 In ten years she created four hundred paintings and one thousand drawings. She was especially interested in painting children and is also recognized as the first female painter to paint nude self-portraits. - @heruseofpaint on Instagram

These portraits by an unknown artist depict Samuel and Emily Hart of Philadelphia. Samuel was the son of Michael Hart and Esther Cohen Hart of Easton, Pennsylvania. According to family tradition, he moved to Philadelphia and became a prominent lawyer and member of the Jewish community. His wifes name was Emily and one of his descendants was Charles Henry Hart, an important early historian of Colonial American painting and Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (Malcolm H. Stern, First American Jewish Families: 600 Genealogies, 1654-1977 [Cincinnati: American Jewish Archives, 1978], p. 103). - @schwarzgallery on Instagram

@laboratoriodebio Trampa: Arde. Quema. Arrasa. Transforma. 🏖️ With the warmer weather beaming into Sydney, why not add twelve layers of fabric and head to the beach? This painting, with its antiquated – but still sun-smart! – version of Slip, Slop, Slap is by Australian artist Rupert Bunny, who was born #onthisday in 1864. See the link in our bio for Bunnys artist profile and works in our collection. ☝️ Artwork: Rupert Bunny On the beach (Royan) c1908, Art Gallery of NSW - @artgalleryofnsw on Instagram

Something #intresting I read #Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), known as the father of microbiology today was a former textile merchant. At the age of 16 he started working in a textile shop in Amsterdam and opened his own shop in Delft at the age of 21 where he sold buttons, ribbons, other accessories along with cloth. Soon the merchant became an influential figure managing various businesses and made one of the most important biological discoveries, the single lens microscope. “People in the textiles trade had, for hundreds of years, used glass pearls – small spheres of glass – as lenses to examine cloth in fine detail” and Leeuwenhoek did the same. Inspired by Hooke’s Micrographia (1665), a book containing illustrations of the natural world seen through a microscope, Leeuwenhoek became one of the first people to discover single lens microscope with high magnifications. There are no references I could find of how he applied this to textiles but he did make groundbreaking discoveries in microbiology, like identifying single celled life forms among many others. To create illustrations he as a researcher was not skilled in visual arts and had to collaborate with artists to do so.
