Miss you Mom. These are weird times when people from the United States are not allowed into the European Union. Normally I spend at least a month during the summer months at home in Baltimore or traveling with my family. Last year we flew to Montana where my mom spent some years living in her 20’s and made a road-trip across the state to Glacier national park. This a photo of my Mom in front of a restaurant we stopped at on the side of the road. We drove and listened to the radio that went in and out and later to cheap cd’s we found in a second hand shop. We hiked and had picnics with beautiful views and swam in the ice cold water at the lake with the mountains behind us. It was great. - @_m_u_n_k_90 on Instagram

What would you like to have a repeat photo of? Maybe you’d want to see how your neighborhood has morphed, how a favorite view has changed, or even how your family has aged. We often think of repeat photos as a way to measure glacial retreat, but taking two photos in the same spot at different times can reveal many types of information. One way that researchers in Glacier National Park use repeat photography is to observe changes in vegetation. Because the type and success of vegetation in an area is a product of factors like temperature, precipitation, snowpack, and soil quality, changes in vegetation give us important data about the conditions in that place. In these pictures of Hidden Lake you can see that between 1930 and 2009 evergreen trees colonized large parts of the lower slopes of Bearhat Mountain. An increase in tree cover, like you see here, suggests that the area experienced warming and/or a decrease in snowpack during that time. A smaller snowpack will melt earlier in the summer, which gives a tree more time to grow before frost hits. Glacier’s high elevation areas will continue to see changes to vegetation that will have wide-reaching effects on the ecosystem. #GlacierMovingForward Image 1: T.J. Although I rarely photograph people, I look for their memories and traces, When asked to sum up almost five decades of work I usually refer to my interest in the juxtaposition, relationship, even confrontation of the organic elements of the earth and the structures that we humans place in and on the land. Every photographer must choose their own way to work. We all respond individually to the subject matter we encounter. Some photographers focus more on people than environments, but I am not one of them. I like to use the analogy of the theatre stage. Generally, I prefer photographing before and after the performance. I relish the potential of a place, the atmosphere, and I try to portray that visually. I enjoy using my imagination to create stories and trace histories. I like to sense what has gone on, and what will happen next. When the performers are on stage, I cannot help but be drawn into their stories and follow them. I suppose that I become more passive and allow myself to be entertained. I listen to the performers more than myself. There are many times when this situation might be for the best! However, when I am photographing, I usually prefer my work to be without figures. I want viewers to be alone in the image. Being solitary evokes certain subjective feelings. Mirror Lake, Yosemite by Bob Kolbrener Although The Ansel Adams Gallery is currently closed, we wanted to share this beautiful image from our current exhibit! - Yosemite and The West: Photographs by Bob Kolbrener. (link in bio to Bobs work). My pursuit of fine art photography took a major leap forward when in 1968, having been an amateur photographer for five years, I innocently wandered into Best Studio, now the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite National Park. Before me in all their glory were six Ansel Adams photographs of epic size and imagery. The burning incense and classical music set the tone for an experience that I can easily recall today with exactitude. The next spring, 1969, I was again in Yosemite. This time I was a student at Ansel’s workshop. During the next eight years, I attended another Ansel Adams workshop in Yosemite, as well as his workshop in Carmel, California. In 1974, I was hired by the Ansel Adams Gallery for a summer of teaching photography in Yosemite. In 1977 Ansel invited me to join him as an instructor, along with Yousuf Karsh at Ansel’s spring workshop. My memories of Ansel and his workshops evoke the feeling of energy. Just being in Yosemite and knowing that the Great Man was also there was an inspiration to all. We hung on his every word and gesture! More than forty-five years ago I made a commitment to continue in the Ansel Adams tradition of “straight” photography. There is no use of computers or multiple imagery. There is no print or negative enhancement such as bleaching or intensification. All of my photographs are made in the Great American West using 2 ¼” and 8 x 10” cameras. I print up to 40 x 50” inches the “old fashioned way” using fiber-based paper, tray processing, and selenium toner. In 1977, NASA launched two spacecraft (Voyager 1 and Voyager 2) on a mission to explore Jupiter, Saturn, and their moons. 🌕 In short time, they realized that the Voyager mission would travel into “interstellar” space—the vast expanse beyond our solar system and the gravitational pull of our sun.
