This Red Fox is in care at our wildlife hospital and being treated for sarcoptic mange. Look how improved she looks, even after just one week in care! Mange is caused by sarcoptic mites and causes extreme irritation, which often leads to hair loss. Severe infestations commonly cause emaciation and dehydration as the animal is so desperately itchy, that they become unthrifty and not able to hunt at a self-sustaining level. Many patients admitted with mange also have secondary skin infections or lesions. It’s notoriously challenging to get these patients in for care - they don’t know we’re trying to help them, so safely capturing them is difficult. Luckily, a caring resident was able to safely live-trap this individual to get them into us for care. It can prevent a wide range of diseases and slows down the aging process. The Journal of Pineal Research says … The melatonin secreted by the pineal gland enters every cell in the body. It can even cross the blood-brain barrier. Melatonin also comes from the salivary glands, esophagus, stomach lining and intestinal lining. In fact, a 2017 study reported levels of melatonin found in the digestive tract was 10 to 100 times higher than in the blood. And there was 400 times more melatonin in the gastrointestinal tract than in the pineal gland. This means melatonin can do a lot more than regulate sleep issues. If your dog doesn’t get enough melatonin it can increase inflammation and deplete his immune system. Both of these problems create risk for chronic disease. Every day there are things that can cause melatonin depletion for your dog. And it’s not easy to avoid them … ⚠️ Glyphosate Glyphosate or Roundup is everywhere. It’s in our food, our water and it’s in our air. Glyphosate harms the body in countless ways, one of which is that it depletes melatonin. 📡 Electromagnetic Frequencies & Radiation (EMF-EMR) EMF-EMR depletes melatonin levels in humans and canines. This is man-made electromagnetic radiation from items like Wi-Fi and cell phones. EMF-EMR exposure can cause melatonin deficiency that leads to sleep disorders. Ao abrirmos a caixa de transporte já foi possível observar alguns filhotes ainda vivos na bolsa da mãe, que foram então retirados pela nossa equipe e estão sob nossos cuidados. Mesmo sendo super pequenininhos e ainda estarem com os olhinhos fechados, seguem lutando pelas suas vidas. Nossa equipe assumiu o papel de cuidá-los e alimentá-los, tentando fazer o papel que a sua mãezinha faria. Sabemos que o trabalho não vai ser fácil e no estágio de vida em que estão vai ser muito complicado sobreviver sem a mãe, mas estamos nos empenhando para dar uma segunda chance de vida para eles, com a intenção de futuramente estarem prontos para voltar ao seu ambiente natural. GOOD NEWS: After a gruelling legal battle, the Scottish Government has finally conceded that the live export of Scottish calves was being conducted in breach of the legislation on the protection of animals during transport. Thanks to the support of our amazing supporters we were able to launch Judicial Review proceedings to challenge this awful trade back in February. The Scottish and UK Government resisted for several months, but in a major U-turn, the Scottish Government has now instructed the APHA (which is responsible for approving export journeys) not to approve any further applications for unweaned calf exports that breach the time limits in the regulations. The battle to ban live exports isn’t over yet but we want to take this moment to thank everyone who supported our court case, protested at the ports, signed petitions, wrote to their MPs and tirelessly campaigned against live exports. 💚Together, our fight will continue far beyond the courtroom. A intubação orotraqueal durante uma anestesia não serve apenas para que ocorra a anestesia inalatória. Ela é um modo seguro de mantermos patentes as vias aéreas dos nossos pacientes, evitando colapsos, aspirações (cuff inflado!), além de facilitar a oxigenação e a ventilação assistida caso seja necessário. . A posição esternal acaba sendo a mais comum nas rotinas, mas não é a única. Podemos intubar com o animal em decúbito lateral, e o modo mais fácil de intubar sem auíxilio de outra pessoa, é no decúbito dorsal (como na primeira foto!). . Então a dica de hoje é: treinem a intubação em outras posições, saiam da zona de conforto e treinem também os colegas que trabalham com você! Uma intubação realizada de modo correto e no tempo certo, pode salvar vida! . O treinamento permite que a gente vá aperfeiçoando a técnica e nos traz mais segurança em situações desafiadoras. . . Antibiotic resistance is now considered a global public health crisis. Some researchers are predicting that by 2050 our resistance to antibiotics will cause up to 10 million deaths every year, outdoing cancer as the leading cause of death worldwide. Antibiotics are (over) used in animal farming due to the intense farming processes that exist within the meat industry. The practice of animals being forced to live in confined, crowded spaces; not being given enough time to recover in-between births; and baby animals being taken away from their mothers too early places a strain on the animals’ health, compromises their immune systems, and increases the risk of disease transmission. Due to this risk some countries use antibiotics as a preventive measure, meaning these medicines are given to animals as soon as they are born, whether they are ill or not. Other countries use antibiotics to make livestock animals grow faster, so that profit margins are increased. Every time we use antibiotics (whether in humans or animals) we risk the development of drug-resistant bacteria (a superbug). By using antibiotics in animals when they are not sick, we are adding to the risk of drug-resistant bacteria developing. Remember that saying ‘you are what you eat’? Because our health is closely linked with the health of our ecosystems, and the animals in it, the use of antibiotics in animals can affect humans as diseases can be shared between humans and animals through direct contact. This is not to say we should stop using antibiotics altogether. Antibiotics are needed to protect the health of humans and animals, but should only be used when the animals are already sick. While the vast majority of antibiotic resistance is still caused by overuse in humans, researchers continue to acknowledge that the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture does pose a risk to human health. Limiting antibiotic use in animals is therefore an important step in reducing the risk that antibiotic resistant bugs (that can ultimately affect our health) develop in the first place. - @no_meat_may on Instagram

The truth about the dairy. 😢 In order to keep producing milk for humans, dairy cows have to become pregnant and have calves. This is done forcibly, typically through artificial insemination. Calves are generally taken away from their mothers within 24 hours of birth, causing immense distress for both mother and calf. Both usually cry out for each other as they are separated. The mother has to endure this happening 4 or 5 times before she is considered ‘spent’. Para tanto é rico em gordura, proteínas e hormônios anabolizantes (como o IGF-1). A título de comparação, com 7 meses um bebê humano tem um peso em média de 7-8 kg. . ♀ O leite carrega também hormônios femininos naturalmente produzidos pela vaca, como progesterona e estrógeno, presentes mesmo em leites orgânicos. Concentrações cada vez maiores são encontradas no leite, seja por uso de hormônios exógenos ou por meio de cruzamentos que criaram espécies que produzem leite durante a gestação, período em que os hormônios estão elevados. . 🤱 Quando comparamos o leite humano com o de outros animais, é um dos com menores concentrações de proteínas, cerca de 8,5g/l, enquanto o leite de vaca, por exemplo, possui 33,6 g/l. Há ainda notória diferença no perfil de proteínas. O leite de vaca é rico em caseína, enquanto o humano em lactoalbumina. Isso exemplifica como leites de outras espécies não são projetados para humanos. . 🤷 Os seres humanos são a única espécie de mamíferos que continuam a consumir leite após a fase de lactente, e a única a consumir leite de outras espécies. . ⚠ Leite cheio de hormônios, excesso de proteína e gordura saturada, sem contar antibióticos e agrotóxicos que se acumulam nos tecidos animais. Rats are often associated with disease, sewage and trash, but the viral story of a brave rodent in Cambodia has changed mindsets overnight. Born in Tanzania, Magawa is a 5-year-old African giant pouched rat who can detect deadly unexploded ordnance lying hidden in the jungles and open fields across Cambodia, the second most landmine-affected country after Afghanistan. From the unexploded bombs dropped during the Vietnam war, to the landmines laid by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and in decades of civil conflict that followed, Cambodia has more than 25,000 mine amputees, the largest per capita in the world. But in a span of four years, Magawa - which means courage - has located an impressive 39 active landmines and 28 unexploded munitions. He has helped clear more than 1.5 million square feet of land, the size of 20 football fields, saving tens of thousands from maiming and death in the process. And last week he became the first rat ever to receive a gold medal award for “life-saving bravery and devotion to duty” in the field. “For every landmine or unexploded remnant Magawa finds, he eradicates the risk of death or serious injury. His dedication, skill and bravery are extraordinary examples and deserve the highest possible recognition,” said Jan McLoughlin, director-general of the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) British charity at a virtual ceremony on Friday, Sept. 25, honoring the rat’s incredible achievements.
