Maya Picasso voit le jour le 5 septembre 1935. Picassos first daughter became a source of inspiration for her father who painted and drew her many times in the 30s and 40s. In 1938, Picasso painted Maya à la poupée. In spite of the historical context, this portrait reveals the tenderness that Picasso carries to Maya and exudes an atmosphere of sweetness. Taken from the Marlborough archive, on this day in 1993, Marlborough London exhibited ‘Seven British Painters: Selected Masters of Post-War British Art’. The exhibition explored painters in Britain who strove to represent the human figure, their relationships and surroundings in the most intimate of ways.
