Looks like our Tornado Over Kansas has some attention at MidlandUSA Radio Corporation in Kansas City, the nation’s #1 manufacturer of NOAA Weather Radios. Their meteorologist/spokesperson Bruce Jones has a long standing interest in the painting, and shared that a print of the painting that was in his childhood home inspired him to become a meteorologist. A new Tornado Over Kansas poster is heading to Kansas City for the Midland Radio team! Thank you, Mr. Jones, for sharing these comments with us: The painting tells such a frightening story and yet the Mom and Dad ( certainly the latter) always gave me assurance that the kids and the pets would be okay. Curry also did a good job on the tornado and its surrounding clouds, at a time when the details of tornado formation were not well understood. His portrayal of the funnel cloud and its position in relation to the parent thunderstorm is right on. Even what’s now known as the “clear slot”, a slight erosion of nearby clouds caused by downdraft winds, is portrayed accurately. He must have studied several photos and astutely recreated a real twister. For all of its scientific integrity and the sheer terror, familial cohesiveness, and kinetic drama of the situation, it ranks as my favorite painting. Back in the 18th century when big parts of the world were undiscovered many explorers traveled the world in search of paradise islands with eternal sunshine and exotic - and erotic - inhabitants. Many painters joined the explorers and documented the encounters with the unknown which at the same time served as an illustration of western civilizational superiority. The 2018 TPON TIME Person of the Year: Frank V. Johnson “Usher for a New Era” - On February 20, 2018, Frank Veto Johnson was sworn in as the 30th President of TPON as a Republican from Ohio. Johnson had just won an election of the closest margins, overcoming Senator Warren by just one vote. That one vote may have very well changed the history of our simulation as we know it. Johnson had campaigned heavily on total sim reform. His involvement in the creation of the “TPON 2.0” plan, which outlined some sensible and in other aspects drastic changes to the way TPON operates laid the foundation for goals as President. Some of these goals were included resetting TPON as we know it. Less than a month before Johnson swore in, the new US and TPON Constitutions were officially ratified. Johnson took part in the writings of these Constitutions, being the principal writer of the TPON Constitution in particular. Through the ratification of these Constitutions, Johnson laid the groundwork for the reset. The reset had long been one of TPON’s most controversial issues. When the Constitution was ratified, and Johnson elected as President, he knew he had to be the one to finally turn back the clocks. On March 8th, 2018, President Johnson along with Joseph Pitts and John N. Tesla submitted their final version of the “Reset Act” which after intense debate in Congress made it to Johnson’s desk and thus signed into law. On April 3, 2018, TPON officially rewinded back 86 years smoothly, squashing all of the anti-reset concerns. The bloom of activity following the reset is regarded as one of TPON’s most active period. Despite Johnson serving only one term (albeit extended to 91 days due to new Constitutional provisions), he signed 42 pieces of legislation into law, vetoed 12, and issued numerous executive orders in-line with his Republican platform. In addition, Johnson set a new standard for how to operate the Executive, respond to events, and engage the world. Following his one-term tenure as President, Johnson continued to serve in TPON by authoring and moderating numerous events (which he still does). Past Exhibition Highlights Series Béatrice Coron: The Secret Life of Cities September 4th 2007 – January 11th 2008 Béatrice Coron: The Secret Life of Cities presents a selection of Coron’s large-scale paper-cutouts of urban environments created over the past decade. Coron’s cities are complex narratives teeming with life. Figures in silhouette fill busy streets and can be seen through every window and doorway. In some, the underground and underwater environment is also a part of the city as well as skies filled with helicopters, hot air balloons, and angels. The stories are intended to unfold in the mind of the viewer. Coron’s technique is paper-cutting—she has made tiny pin books and cut paper scrolls 50 feet long. Often created as multiples, the works are hand-cut from Tyvek. Coron’s passion for working in silhouettes perhaps derives from her French roots; she was born and raised in Lyon, France. The very word “silhouette” comes from King Louis XV’s unpopular Minister of Finance, Etienne de Silhouette, who slashed so many budgets that his name became synonymous with cutting paper.
