It’s been 10 days since the @nytimes called “media-savvy” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s “viral condemnation of sexism” a means ”to amplify her own political brand.” For context, her speech was in response to fellow House member Ted Yoho calling her “a f*cking b*tch” on the Capitol steps and his subsequent non-apology on the House floor. “I apologize for their misunderstanding,” Mr. Yoho said. But “I cannot apologize for my passion or for loving my god, my family and my country.” This incident reminded me of when I played Judy Chen, a thirtysomething investigative financial journalist in @ayadakhtar’s JUNK. The play was set in 1985. For context, that was 15 years after 60 women sued Newsweek for only allowing men to be staff reporters. And that also was six months before Time would publish an article saying women in their 40s were more likely to be killed by a terrorist than get married. During one talkback, an audience member shared that they judged Judy (lol, ok Nancy be serious) for not having rebuffed the advances of an ultra-wealthy man she interviews for her book. And in Judy’s defense, I replied, “how come no one judges the rich man for hitting on her while she was doing her job?” To that end, how come Ted Yoho isn’t considered “media-saavy” and his actions seen as a “means to amplify *his* own political brand”? How come men using their power to their advantage is so normal it is invisible? But when women like @aoc do it it makes them f*cking b*tches? In the words of Angelica Schuyler to Hamilton (per Lin-Manuel Miranda), “you forget yourself.” Today, I am committed to being ‘the rubber’ opposing ‘the glue’ of society’s sexist double standards. 1.) When I was in the first grade, a white student caught me drinking out of the water fountain and told me to stop because it was “whites only.” 2.) I had white childhood friends who would say to me that I had to lie and say I wasn’t black to meet their racist parents and stay at their house. 3.) On the first day of middle school, a white student harassed me because my sister had spent time putting my natural hair up into space buns. She called me racist names and proceeded to bully me for the rest of the school year. 4.) My godfather had the confederate flag displayed proudly in his living room. It wasn’t until I explained to him the trauma that flag brings that he took it down. I was a child. 5.) Walking home from school, my sister and I got called the n-word by our neighbors. We were in elementary school. 6.) Sitting down at dinner with my godmother’s family and being asked if I ever met an n-word before. 7.) A childhood friend offered to pay me money if I showed up to class with an Afro. I declined, but that didn’t stop her and numerous other classmates from touching my hair like it was on display. 8.) In college, I got detained and questioned by the Parkside police as to why I was roaming the hallways directly after the library had closed at night. I had to prove that I was a student. They did not bother to ask my white friend those same questions. 9.) Experiencing numerous institutional racist encounters and micro-aggressions during my 8.5 years of college. 10.) Being always told that Affirmative Action was the reason I was accepted into college and not the fact that I continuously maintain a 4.0 GPA. 11.) Being told continuously by an ex-friend that I was an “educated black” and, therefore, my opinion meant more than uneducated blacks. 12.) The way we depict trans people in media matters - the statistics show that most of us dont know a trans person, and so we only have the media we consume as a point of reference. Jk Rowling has repeatedly demonstrated prejudice against trans people, she has deliberately spread misinformation about trans lives - always neatly packaging her transphobia in faux concern. The difficulty with transphobic language and behaviour is that its often quite coded - those unfamiliar with the struggles trans people go through just to live their lives, might glance at her comments and the way she is choosing to depict trans people in her work and not nessecarily see the transphobia unfold. Writing a book with a villain that chooses to kill whilst cross-dressing isnt a coincidence. The receipts are there, she has a history, and shes choosing to use her massive platform to spread a harmful message. Fortunately, I dont think I have to tell anyone not to read her new books because... who has read a Robert Galbraith novel ever??? But please generally do not support her work (I say this as a massive Harry Potter fan! You can still love the Harry Potter you grew up without loving the author), please call out transphobia when you see it and if youre not sure how to spot it I highly recommend @disclosuredoc on Netflix to get you started on how to be anti-transphobic! - @hildasparkston on Instagram

Eu sei! Não tá tudo perfeito, mas amei mesmo assim rsrs.☀️ Essa foto me fez lembrar da parábola de Jesus nos ensinando onde devemos construir nossa casa (a casa somos nós). E sempre pensei que é muito louco contruir a casa na Rocha, pois é um lugar tão desnivelado, como seria difícil construir uma casa nesse lugar! Daí precisei entender algumas coisas. Existe uma teoria que afirma que o equilibrio não necessariamente as coisas precisam estar niveladas, mas sim estabilizadas, mesmo que não seja um chão tão nivelado se o lugar for consistente é possível encontrar estabilidade. A Rocha é assim, não tem um terreno plano e nem perfeito, mas sempre será um lugar estável e equilibrado. Lição 🤷🏼♀️ Perfeito aos nossos olhos nem sempre será o melhor rsrs. It’s funny because I see many trans women posting every Tuesday, and I believe it’s important for visibility to help normalize being trans, but the fact of the matter is, I don’t have that many pics of myself pre-transition. I didn’t like my reflection then, and I’m only beginning to like it now. At that time, taking a selfie seemed pointless. Hey. Hi. Hello. 🙃 So much time has passed since I posted anything at all here and for that, I have an explanation. That makes it sound like I feel as if I owe one, and I don’t. I do things because I want to, if and when I feel they are necessary and/or important. This feels that way to me. The past year has been a strange one. For many months, there were things that felt all-consuming: preparing to move and then moving, acclimating, teaching, and now isolating. I was all over the place in terms of routine, food, and movement for a while, and am finally working on allowing myself to be NEW. I’m not looking to get back, but to become something that fits my life now, instead of an old image of myself, remade. I’ve been working on nutrition with @nourishmygut for about a month (highly recommend - sometimes we need help and that’s okay!!!!) and feel like that’s coming together. Yesterday was a difficult day for me, though. I went to donate convalescent plasma and I wasn’t able to go through with the donation because I only had one viable vein and it was still bruised from the blood draw for the antibody test. This kind of thing puts me back in a weird state of mind because I was previously very held back from doing things by an obese body, and now a combination of weight gain and a lack of physical fitness is keeping me from doing a thing I think is so essential to a culture of mutual aid and community support. It’s probably a weird thing to get sad/frustrated about but here I am. I have a renewed motivation to get to a place where I can run when I want to but even more importantly, to have a more balanced view of fitness than I did before. I’m aiming for flexibility (physical and mental), adaptability, and consistency. I’m actually feeling excited to see where I can end up with this shift. I appreciate you guys for sticking around and being such a supportive community for each other - I see it every day and it’s truly uplifting. Things have changed a lot for so many of us and it’s important that we all have a place where we can get and provide support. It’s the start of something new 🦋🦋🦋 I’m so excited to share that I’m joining a food startup in the UAE in the e-grocery space. Food + tech is a magical place right now. 📸Meet The Owner📸 My interest in photography started in high school. I was the girl always carrying a camera, taking pictures of everyone and posting them on Myspace 🤣. It brought me so much joy when my friends and classmates posted pictures I took! During college, I majored in Business Management but always had a passion and desire to pursue photography as a career. It wasn’t until 2015 that I took the leap into full time entrepreneurship. I was extremely ambitious to leave my job to pursue my passion. I was so blessed that it worked out for me. It has not been the easiest ride. It took quite a few years to catch my stride, but here I am! Not only am I a full time photographer, but my business survived the COVID-19 Quarantine. Learning how to effectively run a photography business during a pandemic has been interesting, but I have always remained optimistic through this entire ordeal. My business was still able to thrive because I used my downtime during quarantine to focus on photo restoration. I have always had a passion for restoring old, damaged images. I felt so blessed to be able to still have a sustainable business without picking up my camera. Now that things are starting to change and I have opportunities to shoot more often, it has been very interesting adjusting to guidelines. I hate that I cant hug my clients, dance at their wedding receptions, or that they arent able to see my smile when we get the shot! I try to count my blessings or think of a positive during difficult times. I was almost crushed under the weight of it all... The pandemic, the stress 𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦 the pandemic...▪️My body started to give, I gained weight (like a lot of weight), my shoulders sagged, my back hunched, the dark circles under my eyes become more pronounced and puffy, my range of motion became limited, my flexibility disappeared and my smile curled downward. I lost my simchas hachayim (joyful spirit).▪️This picture was taken before all that.▪️More importantly I felt there was a blockage in the heavens keeping me from moving forward and resulting in me running head first into brick walls every which way I turned. I felt boxed in, hopeless and helpless.▪️But I didnt give up. I didnt stop praying, I didnt stop pushing, I didnt stop trying, I didnt stop crying - out loud, to Hashem and to anyone that would listen.▪️Something changed the month of Elul (the hebrew month prior to Rosh Hashanah). There was a cosmic shift, I could actually feel it, physically, and those closest to me felt it too (Hubby, the kids, @goldietauber, @humansofjudaism)...▪️I have always been open and honest about sharing and will continue to do so as the calendar year comes to a close, with a story that will absolutely blow your mind (watch for it Nov 17).▪️But for now... I am here to share the power of prayer, specifically prayer with tears to open shaari shamayim (the gates of heaven) allowing our pleas to travel straight to our father in heaven. Unlike Rosh Hashanah when we crown Hashem as our King on Yom Kippur we revel in the relationship of 𝙖𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙪 malkeinu (𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧, our king) a relationship of love and compassion. As with our own flesh and blood parents/children, we only need show how much we want to return to be forgiven and embraced.▪️I wish you the ability to cry with tears or at least to want to cry with tears (as the desire is just as good). May this be a year of refuah (healing), yeshua (salvation) and bracha (blessing). May our collective tears (external or internal) cause a cosmic shift and change the course of the world for good. But when her father became ill and required occupational therapy as part of his treatment, Fisher was impressed by the care that his therapists brought to their work. In my edit, you can see him in a tall picture frame, as he appears in Coco, and a picture of Pedro himself in front (as well as a *few* more on the wall)! ❤️ . Can you tell he holds a big place in my heart? ❤️ . #PedroInfante was basically Méxicos sweetheart/heartthrob during Méxicos Golden Era of Cinema. In his short entertainment career he filmed 60(ish) movies, and recorded 366 songs! He died at the young age of 39 after crashing the plane he was flying 💔 . The importance he plays in Coco, along with #JorgeNegrete , is that they are said to be the inspiration behind the films villain, #ErnestoDeLaCruz ❤️ . Pedro and Jorge were often portrayed as rivals in the black and white films they starred in, and were rumored to have a real life rivalry, but close relatives have confirmed their friendship and admiration for each other. Jorge was the one who encouraged Pedro to start acting, and Pedro was always grateful for Jorge opening the film industrys doors for him. When Jorge became ill, and was at deaths door, Pedro came to his side (at the hospital) and gifted him a toy train, since Jorge had once mentioned that as a child it was one of his greatest wishes, to have a toy train. Needless to say, Jorges death was very painful to Pedro. 💔 . Watching his films, and listening to his music, is one of my favorite pastimes ❤️ . I tend to cosplay characters whom I identify with on deep levels and Frodo was one of my first. For years I was scared to cosplay him because of my skin and how this fandom would treat me doing so and back then I was scared to cosplay in general thinking I’d be made fun of so I never did. But after rewatching Lord of the Rings with my best friend the spark rekindled and I said “I’m doing it!” And I have received nothing but love and acceptance from everyone.In times like now I cosplay what I need and Frodo always gives off strength and hope. I walk through the many challenges of life tackling every step with the help of my family and friends who guide wine when I lose my way, which is more often than you think. I got into photography when I was a teenager taking photos of my brother and his friends skateboarding. I recently graduated from CCAD with a BFA in photography and now I am employed here at Midwest! I love how photography can tell a story through a single shot, a lot of my work is inspired by stories, folklore, and pop culture. I am often amazed by photography’s power of persuasion and ability to sell just about anything. Fun facts: I love music, I recently have found myself more inspired by music videos. I am a HUGE fan of Marvel, Star Wars and all things Disney. I am a huge Blue Jackets fan and can’t wait to watch them play again.
