Launching in 1983, the TR-909 offered producers MIDI connectivity, a powerful sequencer, external storage and punchy analog drums with extensive controls. It’s time for Machine Of The Week, and we’re welcoming the flanger guitar pedal Estradin Effekt-1 (Эстрадин эффект-1) to the spotlight. @perhammar2000 explains why: Since I started to make music, I always lived with the ”knowledge” that the flanger effect is something that should be laughed at. Like if you want a track to sound as bad as possible, run it thru a Pioneer DJM-600 with the flanger effect enabled. And I always thought it’s been interesting why an effect can create so many feelings and opinions. Especially in Sweden, where everyone seems to be very sensitive to trends. What’s in and what’s out? What’s cool this summer? We’ll it was never the flanger effect, that’s for sure. So when I found this piece Soviet steel from 1988 that happens to be a flanger effect for guitars, my immediate respons was ”I need to get it and try it”. And after 7 years as a part of the studio setup, that’s exactly what I think everytime I consider using it. Because this guy is random. I’m not sure what it went thru in early life, but it can’t be trusted. Hence my love to it. And it seem to love me back, since it gives me a very noisey and somehow human touch to sounds i run thru it. Oh yeah - I forgot: It’s a flanger. It flanges things. If you want an example, check out my album track ”Galatea”, where it did it perfecty on those dub chords. Flangers triggers peoples feelings. Soviet 80’s triggers mine. A Clockwork Orange. The Shining. Tron. What do these three films have in common besides a wicked awesome score accompaniment? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The Rhode Island-born woman behind those sounds, Wendy Carlos. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Born in 1939, Carlos exhibited an extraordinary talent from the get-go. Per a Providence Journal article on April 6, 1979, “As a 17-year-old at St. Raphael Academy[, she] wowed the science fair with a tape-recording system using two separate hi-fi systems to demonstrate three-dimensional sound. The next year[, she] majored in physics and math at Brown University, then shouldered music composition as yet another major.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her tenacious work ethic and ability to consume herself in work created a legend in the music industry. At 28 years old, Carlos burst into the recording scene when she released the eventual Grammy Award-winning Switched-On Bach, an album that introduced the synthesizer. The album wasn’t credited to Wendy, though, it was credited to her dead name (the name given to her when she was born and assigned male at birth). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Following the release of Switched-On Bach, Carlos left the public eye for the better part of the 1970s. She won awards during that time, always sending someone to accept on her behalf.
