Happy Wednesday y’all! We’ve got some awesome help on the farm today bucket feeding replacement heifers with her Daddy. 🥰 Shawn is at the shop and will be there until 6 pm. Couple of updates: WE WILL NOT HAVE FRESH BEEF THIS WEEK. We will have a delivery next week (9/14). We are running low on frozen steaks, so grab them while you can. To every animals we have roughly: 6-10 lbs of filet 24-28 lbs of ribeyes 18-22 lbs of ny strips 300-350 lbs of ground beef So while we’d love to process for just steaks, we have to hang tight until we move all of the other cuts. You helped out tremendously last week during our sale, thank you. Whole and half beef are still available. Do you hit a mid afternoon slump? 🐐 I was looking through memories (photos) and came across some good memories from when we had more goats than any other animal! These three boys would always hopefully look out the stall door, thinking surely I had treats! Only Pongo on the far right is still here. The bad thing about goats is you love them like crazy but they still don’t have a human life span. 🐐 I’m a better shepherd and yarn maker because of these Pygora goats. The start of my fiber business and they will always have a piece of my heart. 🐐 As for that afternoon slump, I like a cup of coffee and some activity. Maja and Ferdinand💕 He was born two days ago. The birth must have been very easy, because our eyes were only off Maja for between two and three hours. From no signs of the birth about to start to her calf being born! Because of that she gave birth in the middle of the pasture among all the other cows. Some of them got really curious while others was angry at the calf. So we took Maja and Ferdinand to their own pasture, where they could get to know each other and relax. Didn’t take long until he figured out where he could find the milk. Maja is such a wonderful mom, but also wonderful in general. She didn’t mind us moving her boy away from the others, she just gently followed us. Selbstverständlich! 😉 Es war sehr ruhig um prosa in den vergangenen Wochen, wir hatten und haben mit den Auswirkungen der aktuellen Situation schwer zu kämpfen, mussten umstrukturieren und umorientieren und haben versucht das Beste aus den neuen Umständen zu machen. So entstand unser Herzensprojekt @sofareisen , ein kostenloses online Abenteuer-Festival für den guten Zweck, mit dem wir in den vergangenen Monaten knapp 25.000€ Spenden sammeln und weit mehr als 10.000 Menschen Nothilfe, in Form von dringend benötigten Lebensmitteln und Hygieneartikeln, leisten konnten. Sofareisen hat uns einiges an Aufmerksamkeit abverlangt, nichts desto trotz gab es bei prosa keinen Stillstand. Wir haben neue Produkte entwickelt und auch die von Euch gewünschten Farben werden kommen. Doch auch hier hat Corona alle Prozesse enorm erschwert und verlangsamt. Aber wir bleiben zuversichtlich und haben bereits mit der Planung der anstehenden Crowdfunding-Kampagnen begonnen. Hoffentlich können wir Euch in den Kommenden Wochen wieder intensiver am Entwicklungsprozess teilhaben lassen und von großen Fortschritten berichten. That leather is an animal product can be a difficult issue for some consumers. There are misconceptions about animals being reared solely to make leather, that animals are abused or that leather production is driving the destruction of the rain forests. Such fears have seen companies like the Prada group ban kangaroo leather and Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Mulberry drop exotic leathers from their collections. Agenda groups constantly push the narrative that, to save the lives of animals, we must stop buying leather. The reality is very different. The vast majority of hides and skins are recovered from animals reared and slaughtered for meat, milk and wool, from which the hide or skin is a waste. The kangaroo skins banned by Prada are recovered from animals culled to protect endangered grasslands and wildlife. A very small number of animals, the so-called ‘exotics’, are reared for leather but even here, things are not black and white, as demand for this leather drives conservation of species, habitats and cultures, while creating jobs and income for local populations. The reality is that stopping using leather would not prevent the slaughter of any of these animals. Meat consumption has continued to rise with two of the largest producers, Brazil and the USA, reporting their best and second best years, respectively, for meat exports in 2019. At the same time, due to falling demand for leather, nearly 20% of the hides that they produced were simply thrown away. The kangaroo culls in Australia are not motivated by demand for leather and will continue even if there is no market for the skins. For some exotic species, where demand for their skins has added value to conserving them and their habitats, a halt in leather production could see them under threat as they switch from valuable product to undesirable pests. The crocodiles of the Northern Territories of Australia were almost entirely culled before value was added to their skins and habitats. Removing that value could see them endangered again and is why the IUCN spoke out against Chanel, when it removed reptile skin leather from its collections. The year was 2011 and I thought, “hmmm we’re a German (ish) restaurant, why don’t we do Oktoberfest?” I was just entering into my 3rd year of ownership and the restaurant was slowly climbing out of the the hardships of the first 2 years. We had a great crew (seen in the pic) and I felt confident we could pull it off. After phoning some of my German connections we had pretzels, beer and music sorted out. The best part was the music; franzl and his squeezebox amazed guests and staff alike. And Oktoberfest at Ulis was born! Fast forward a bunch of unforgettable Oktoberfest’s with many many stories that are not appropriate for ig🤣 and here we are, Oktoberfest 2020. Well Oktoberfest will continue this year, from Friday September 18th - Sunday October 3rd‬ And We will have all the traditional menu items; all the staff will dress in costume and the restaurant will be decorated as festive as always. BUT With much regret Franzl and his squeeze box, will not be joining us this year, much to his chagrin he has decided to take the year off to insure his health and safety. Franuś bardzo chce żyć...! 2020 rok pozostanie w kalendarzu ludzkości zapisany jako ten trudny. Jednak dla osiołka Franusia jest on nie tylko trudny, lecz także tragiczny. Stracił dotychczasowy dom i zdrowie. Walczymy, aby 2020 rok nie był ostatnim w jego życiu. Walczymy o zdrowie zaniedbanego Franusia i prosimy o pomoc. Osiołki mają w sobie ogromny urok. Potrafią zaczarować swoją urodą większość ludzi. W naszym przystaniowym sercu też zajmują szczególne miejsce. To bystre, sprytne i sympatyczne istoty. Na wybiegu naszych osiołków, zawsze jest wesoło, zawsze coś psocą. Osiołki są kochane przez dzieci i dorosłych. Dlatego też tak ich dużo w parkach rozrywki, cyrkach i różnego rodzaju agroturystykach. Poprzez uczucia jakie wywołuje w ludziach kontakt z osiołkami, często te urocze zwierzęta trafiają pod opiekę nieodpowiedzialnych, nie posiadających podstawowej wiedzy osób. Franuś to dzielny i bardzo uroczy osiołek. Ma piękne oczy i sympatyczny wyraz pyszczka. Przez kilka lat swojego życia mieszkał w mini zoo, które zostało stworzone przy restauracji. Tam swoją urodą zachwycał gości przyjeżdzających na posiłek. Wydawało się, że tak już będzie wyglądać jego życie. Niestety niczego nie można być pewnym… Los bywa okrutny. Na początku tego roku, restauracja została zamknięta. Zwierzęta, które mieszkały w Mini Zoo straciły dach nad głową, nie miały gdzie się podziać. I tak rozpoczęła się tragedia miłego osiołka Franusia. Znalazł tymczasowego opiekuna. Jednak ten nie potrafił zapewnić osiołkowi właściwych warunków i w wyniku złej opieki doszło do poważnej infekcji prącia. Osiołek cierpiał. Urząd Gminy przeprowadził interwencję, w wyniku której Franuś został natychmiast odebrany. Potrzebował klinicznego leczenia i dlatego zdecydowaliśmy się przejąć nad nim opiekę. Nie przyjechał on jednak do Przystani, nie poznał naszych osiołków. Jego stan zdrowia na to nie pozwalał. - @przystanocalenie on Instagram

Just back from a perfect holiday in Castelmagno, visiting one of two remaining alpine producers of this unusual natural blue cheese. It was only the second make of the season, and the level of biodiversity we found in the mountain pastures was absolutely off the charts—as was, unfortunately, the associated pollen count. The herd of 24 cows, mostly Piedmontese, looked perfectly at home on the steep slopes, and we were particularly interested to witness milking in an outdoor milking bale, a real timesaver for the grazing cows, if not the milker. Most intriguing was its similarity to Bleu de Termignon, made not far away on the other side of the border with France. As Francis pointed out, it’s surely no coincidence that these naturally soured, uninoculated blue cheeses both have their curds rest for several days before being milled using a contraption like a meat grinder and curd-salted... The Castelmagno is a tamer, drier cheese than its French counterpart, but is no less exciting, particularly for fans of British cheeses who wonder what our prehistoric cheeses might have been like. Viikonlopun loman jälkeiset kaksi poutapäivää on ollut yhtä hötäkkää ja talveen valmistautumista 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️ Maanantai- aamuna lähti Sumppi-vasu välitykseen ja urakoijan puimuri alkoi hyrryytellä noita meidän viljoja pois pelloilta🚜🌾🌾 Sitä hommaa jatkettiin pari päivää niin myöhään iltaan kuin vain pystyi puimaan. Viljat ovat melkoisen epätasaisesti kypsynyttä märkää sekulia ja vihreitä jyviä on paljon mukana joten kuivauskustannukset nousevat korkeiksi. Meillä ei ole omaa kuivuria vaan ajamme viljat tuonne muutaman kilometrin päähän naapurin kuivaamolle, kuivaaminen jatkuu vielä huomiseen nyt kun sateet alkoivat. Ostimme viljaa myös naapurikylältä koska omat viljat eivät mein äpyleille tule riittämään vaikka saisimme vielä nuo pari hehtaaria jotka jäivät sateen alle kunnialla pois. Tämä mein ammatti on paljolti säiden armoilla elämistä ja tänä syksynä sateet ja viljojen myöhäinen valmistuminen ovat olleet riesana ympäri maata 🤔🤔. Minä oon korjannut satoa enempi ihmisten syötäväksi, ei tuolta puolukasta vaan malta pysyä poissa jos tuonne vaan jossakin välissä ehtii: niin hyvin noita punaposkia on nyt mättäitä koristamassa ❤️ Sinikka-luumu tuotti myös ensimmäistä kertaa runsaan sadon....nams että tykkään luumuista (samoin vatsani)🙈. Navetalla on myös tehty pikku korjauksia talvea silmällä pitäen. Vuotava juomakuppi sai uuden venttiilin ja lantakouru uudet virtsanerotuspellit. Ja kun sade ja myrsky painavat päälle jäivät lehmät nyt sisäruokintaan. Nyt sataa, sauna lämpiää ja puolukat on keitelty hilloksi...saunan jälkeen nukkumaan ja kuuntelemaan joko myrsky alkaa yöllä mylvimään 💦💦💨💨💨. Heute möchte ich euch unsere süße kleine Sterndal vorstellen 🌟 Wenige Tage nach dem Almabtrieb hat unsere Kalbin Speik Zwillinge verworfen. Der Termin wäre erst Anfang November gewesen, also knapp 6 Wochen zu früh. Während das eine Kalb bereits tot zur Welt kam, atmete Sterndal noch. Wir hatten nicht viel Hoffnung, dass sie lange lebt. Man konnte ihr ansehen, dass sie noch nicht fertig ausgebacken ist. Aber wie durch ein Wunder überlebte sie die ersten paar Stunden. Sie bekam fast keine Luft, die Lunge war noch nicht fertig ausgebildet. Ihre Nase lief ununterbrochen, sie hatte Schleim in Lunge und Luftröhre. Sie konnte nicht stehen, ihre Beine waren zu weich. Aber sie zeigte so viel Überlebenswillen! ❤️ Nach 3 Tagen blieb sie das erste Mal alleine stehen, als wir sie aufstellten. Nach 1 Woche konnte sie sogar schon ganz alleine aufstehen 😍 Sie reicht mir nicht mal bis zum Knie, sooo unglaublich klein! Aber sie ist eine echte Kämpferin, denn sonst wär sie nicht mehr hier 🌟 Ich will euch nichts vormachen, sie ist definitiv noch nicht überm Berg! Jeder Tag ist ein Geschenk und ich bete, dass sie es schafft und zu einer großen Kuh heranwachsen darf 🐮 Es zahlt sich halt doch immer aus an Wunder zu glauben, das Unmögliche möglich zu machen. #mehrlinge Letztes Wochenende war hier richtig was los! Nachdem erst unsere Kuh Nummer 127, Supra, #zwillinge bekommen hat, folge Kuh Nummer 88, Tundra, mit #drillinge n 😳 Da haben wir alle nicht schlecht geschaut. Selbst der Senior hat in seinen 79 Jahren noch nie erlebt, dass sowohl alle Kälber als auch die Mütter fit und Munter waren! 🥰 Die Zwillinge sind ohne Hilfe zur Welt gekommen 💪, bei den Drillingen hat eben jener Senior geholfen und die letzten beiden auf die Welt gebracht 👨🏻‍🦳. In nur 15 Minuten waren alle drei #kälber auf der Welt 🌏. Die fünf Kälber sind mit 35 Kilo jeweils natürlich um einiges kleiner und leichter ⚖️ als Einlinge, jedoch nicht so klein und schwach wie ich es erwartet hätte. Alle fünf Kälber werden den Betrieb in wenigen Wochen verlassen, denn auch wenn zwei weiblich Tiere dabei sind, sind diese nicht zur Zucht 🐄 geeignet. Denn weibliche Mehrlingskälber sind, wenn sie in Kombination mit männlichen Kälber geboren werden, in der Regel Zwitter und somit unfruchtbar ❌. Da die Kälber erst ab 50 Kilo verkauft werden, bleiben diese also einige Zeit länger bei uns als die schwereren Einlinge 🥳. Es ist wieder soweit, die Ernte hat begonnen! 😍 Viele Südtiroler Apfelbauern haben bereits die Vorbereitungen für die Ernte hinter sich und sind schon mittendrin. Einige, welche spätere Sorten haben, sind noch dabei die Vorbereitung zu erledigen, damit die Ernte problemlos beginnen kann. Auch unsere Apfelbäuerin Iris war bereits fleißig und hat die ersten Vorkehrungen getroffen. Zum einen werden die Großkisten für die Äpfel von den Genossenschaften abgeholt und in die Apfelanlage gebracht. Sobald die Großkisten vom Traktor in die Apfelanlage gestellt wurden, werden diese für die neue Ernte vorbereitet. Die alten Etiketten werden dabei entfernt und auch eventuelle Verunreinigungen vom Vorjahr werden aus den Kisten entfernt, damit diese sauber sind. Unsere Apfelbäuerin Iris hat auch alle Maschinen kontrolliert, welche sie für die Ernte benötigt. Auf der Hebebühne wird das Rollsystem für die Großkisten montiert. Auch wurden die dazugehörigen Gabeln vorne und hinten angebracht, damit die leeren Großkisten auf die Hebebühne gehoben und später wieder gefüllt auf dem Boden abgesetzt werden können. Auch das sogenannte „Erntewagele“ wurde vorbereitet. An ihm hat Iris ein Ringmaßangebracht, damit keine zu kleinen Äpfel in die Großkiste kommen. Zu guter Letzt wurden dann auch noch die Pflückkörbe gereinigt. Somit kann die Ernte beginnen. **UPDATE** Little Bills surgery was successful and he is in recovery. They removed over 8 liters of fluid. 😱 They are testing the fluid now but suspect it was urine. So Little Bill has lost almost 18 lbs!!! Poor guy. They think because he was castrated so young that hes probably had a partial obstruction since he was a baby. He isnt out of the woods yet and will be in the hospital for a week at least. Hopefully this isnt an issue in the future and he continues to get better! Thank you for all the prayers!!! ▪︎▪︎▪︎▪︎ Tuesday evening I noticed Little Bill wasnt feeling good. I thought he was having an episode of bloat and gave him vegetable oil. We continued to monitor him but yesterday he was hunched over, and didnt want to move around. The vet come to the farm and what we thought was bloat was urinary calculi. 🤒 Little Bill was also castrated by his previous owners at 6 weeks old and combine that with an unexperienced goat owner (me) that was giving him grain and corn, well, this is the result. In the mornings I usually split a cup of grain and corn between my 3 goats, which isnt a lot, but its enough that it can cause problems. It has been a hard lesson to learn. 😬 His potassium levels are still too high for surgery this morning, so it has been rescheduled for this afternoon. It is a very expensive surgery but thankfully it is something we feel comfortable doing and it will give him the best possible outcome. 🤞🏻I will update this post later today after he is in recovery.
