Non-figurative art is created by establishing a dynamic rhythm of determinate mutual relations which excludes the formation of any particular form. - #PietMondrian How can you make people aware of universal harmony? Piet Mondrian loved to dance (he even named his ultimate painting Broadway Boogie-Woogie). According to his aesthetic principles, which he consequently applied to every aspect of life, he had to neutralize any move to the right with a counter-move to the left; same for up and down. People who joined him on the dance floor reported that it looked like nothing they had experienced before. Influenced by Theosophy, an esoteric movement also followed by Rudolf Steiner, Mondrian developed a painting style, #neoplasticism, that aimed to depict universal harmony. More is always better. That seems to be the working philosophy of Ai Weiwei, the Chinese superstar artist, who will be taking over Los Angeles this fall with not one, but three exhibitions simultaneously on view throughout the city. The opening of Ai’s show at the Marciano Art Foundation on September 28 will be followed just a day later by his opening at Jeffrey Deitch’s new space in Hollywood, that gallery’s inaugural show. A week later, UTA Artist Space (run by United Talent Agency) will open a third exhibition of Ai’s work in their new Beverly Hills iteration. Though these anticipated presentations of his work have garnered some media notice, it’s been mostly about the unusual occurrence of an artist exhibiting this much in one city at one time. On view at @ludwigmuseum through November 22, 2020 :⠀ ⠀ Keeping the Balance⠀ with Roman Ondak⠀ ⠀ Keeping the Balance is a temporary exhibition presenting about sixty works from the Art Collection Telekom. Most of the works are by artists of Eastern European roots.⠀ ⠀ On display in the exhibition is Mars Walks – a repurposed ⠀ five-meter-long gymnastics beam, the top covered with red dust, becomes a narrow band of alien soil, complete with the artists footsteps. The exhibition runs through 3 July 2021 - “Virginia Jaramillo: The Curvilinear Paintings, 1969-1974” presents eight abstract paintings by Virginia Jaramillo (b. 1939, El Paso), in which thin, undulating lines dance across monochrome fields of bright, flat color. - The Menil’s exhibition marks the fiftieth anniversary of “The De Luxe Show”, one of the first racially integrated exhibitions of contemporary art held in the United States, organized by the Menil Foundation and curated by New York artist Peter Bradley in 1971. At Art Basel OVR:2020, White Cube will present OPEN BODY, a solo presentation of sculptures and works on paper by #AntonyGormley. ‘The sculptures are bodies described in the language of architecture: built spaces that contain bodies. The group portrays a mood so strong that it is almost unnerving on this live recording. Bertoia-Era Curtis Jere Spray Kinetic Steel Wire Sculptures Important pair of matching MCM decorative art pieces by the great metalwork artist Curtis Jere. Curtis Jere was very popular in the 70’s and he continued to create through the 90’s. This piece is abstract in style and features a faux marble resin base pedestal atop which a spray of steel kinetic wires sit. It does have paper labels which verify it as authentic Curtis Jere and not in his manner or a repro. This pair is rather rare as our research has not unearthed any other example. Very much reminicent an likely inspired by the work of Harry Bertoia. Wires are flexible enough that air will move them in a kinetic fashion with even a slight breeze. Overall, this set is beautiful throughout with no real damage aside from a few small chips to the base from handling, but nothing unexpected. Please see the pictures for a closer look. The Ellipse Light, designed by Keiji Ashizawa, is a poetic, playful comment on a relationship both complex and politicised. It takes a large, flat piece of aluminium that, when strung by a single cable, warps under the weight of its own expanse. It distils the massive trade relationship between Australia and Japan – stretching back over a century – into a single gesture.
