With the upcoming heat wave I felt that I should talk about this. Last week in the late evening we took our dogs for a walk around our block. There’s a park in our neighborhood where they stopped for water. We were out for maybe 30 minutes. That’s all it took for our sweet Tilly to have a heat stroke. She vomited, was panting excessively, disoriented, and drooling shortly after we got home. None of these symptoms started during our walk. It’s important to know the signs and what to do if you think your dog may be having a heat stroke. Early intervention is crucial. Our sweet girl is doing great and her tests came back great. Just because it’s under 80 degrees or it’s never happened to you, or you would do this, that, or the other different, I don’t care. This is for educational purposes. Thank you. Symptoms to watch for include: - Excessive panting - Drooling - Reddened gums - Vomiting - Diarrhea - Mental dullness - Dizziness or lack of coordination - Loss of consciousness - Collapse If you think your dog is having a heat stroke: - Move them to a cooler area - Take their temperature if possible, if it is over 103 they are at risk of heat stroke - Try to bring your dogs temperature down, DO NOT put them in cold water as it can shock their body - Get them to a veterinarian I’m going to link an article in my bio if anyone would like to further read about heat stroke in dogs.
