On this day, 1997, Urban Hymns by The Verve was released. I was lucky to spend practically the whole year with the band in the lead up to it. . This pic was taken during the recording at Metropolis Studios in Chiswick. While we were in this tungsten lit orange cave the Spice Girls were right outside, at the bus garage next door filming ‘Spiceworld’. Also, behind Richard’s shoulder at the back right of picture I can just see my assistant, Mickey, reading the paper. Classic Mickey, that. . Subsequent pics were taken at the shoot for the album cover in Richmond Park which I didn’t do. . I published a book of my pictures back in 2017. It’s been a weird few days. Waking up and thinking, yes it is real. I find myself a little in the dumps at times but what has given me a lift is all the messages from everyone over the last few days. “Although I just moved back to Los Angeles, Dusty Groove (@dustygroove) in Chicago remains my favorite independent record store in the country,” explains @smashingpumpkins and @nightdreamer guitarist Jeff Schroeder (@jjjschroeder), “the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the selection of vinyl is second to none. All sections are well stocked and maintained, but the main reason I go to Dusty Groove is for the jazz section, I haven’t been to many records stores in the world that have a better maintained and curated jazz section than Dusty Groove. An added benefit is that it’s located in the Ukrainian Village, which is a great area to spend a day eating, drinking coffee, and all other sorts of activities.” Jeff cites Yngwie Malmsteen’s solo debut, ‘Rising Force’ as the record that had a profound effect on him, “it blows me away every time I hear it, which is very often. I still own my original vinyl copy from the eighties. The playing on this album—like all Malmsteen albums, to be honest—is utterly unique, intense, and inspired. When I hear this album, I think about how he created his own space within the musical landscape of time and did it all by the time he was 19 or 20 years old. La sua famiglia apparteneva alla piccola-media borghesia e proveniva dal Veneto, anche se le origini del padre erano triestine e il suo cognome di chiara matrice slava. Avvicinatosi allo studio della chitarra più per obbligo che per scelta, il giovane Giorgio iniziò a prendere ispirazione dai maggiori jazzisti dell’epoca, come Barney Kessel e Tal Farlow. La sua carriera iniziò nel gruppo di Ghigo Agosti, ma negli anni della giovinezza frequenta altri grandi artisti come Jannacci e Tenco. Durante gli anni universitari il suo talento cominciò a essere notato, e finì per condurlo fino alla trasmissione Il Musichiere, dove la sua carriera prese definitivamente la strada del successo. Negli anni Sessanta l’artista frequentò in quattro occasioni Sanremo, senza grande fortuna, ma è sul finire del decennio che diede vita alla sua svolta più grande, quella verso il teatro-canzone. On a blacked-out arena, shrouded in smoke, lights suddenly covered Alexandra Palace, and the crowd erupted as the members of Cage the Elephant were revealed. The band was scattered over two levels, with some level with the audience and others towering over the crowd. However, all attention was grabbed by frontman Matt Shultz, whose chaotic energy had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. Shultz’s performance style is something that can only be described as pure showmanship. Not only did he kick, jump and dance, he also added comedy to moments of his set. 📷ROCK VIU ➡️ WILLY DEVILLE 📍Sot del Migdia, Barcelona. 📆 (24/09/1988) Estava per la Plaça Reial el dia abans que Willy DeVille actués al Sot del Migdia per les Festes de la Mercè, i me’l vaig trobar en la terrassa del bar Glaciar. No m’ho vaig pensar dues vegades: vaig agafar un cartell que hi havia enganxat a la porta i li vaig acostar amb la intenció d’aconseguir el seu autògraf. Em va dir que sí i va estampar-hi la seva signatura. A canvi però, em va demanar la cervesa que portava a la mà, suposo que ja calenta i esbravada. Em va semblar un tracte més que correcte! Anys després, ja en ple èxit del “Demasiado corazón”, va fer una roda de premsa a un hotel de Barcelona. Va aparèixer amb desgana, amb un gosset als braços i una vistosa acompanyant femenina, i es va passar tota lestona fent un dibuix amb un boli Bic a un full de paper mentre responia tota mena de tòpics. En acabar, em vaig acostar a ell amb una foto i diversos discos (entre ells algun bootleg). Això em va valer el premi de ser el fan més fan de la sala, o almenys algú que s’havia escoltat algun disc seu.
