Le Crabe by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1869 🖌 In Le Crabe, painted between 1868 and 1869, Bouguereau shows a young fisher girl casually playing with a small black crab. Unlike Bouguereaus later paintings of peasant girls who confront the viewer with their arresting gazes, the child here is wholly occupied with toying with the small creature, unaware of any audience. Her strikingly lifelike hair falls upon her shoulders, also a variation from the majority of his subjects with their upswept locks.Like all of his peasant children, however, the young girl is depicted barefoot, her perfectly painted, unsoiled feet free from any signs of work or wear, symbols of her idealized existence. Le Crabe is rare in Bouguereaus body of work, featuring a vast coastal scene behind his more well-known imagery of the young peasant girl. The atmospheric beauty of the background showcases the artists skills as a painter; his use of light and shadow accurately captures the dramatic recession into space. Bouguereau was likely inspired by the landscape of Brittany (possibly by the streams of Fouesnant) where he regularly spent the summer months from 1866 until the war of 1870. The model for the young girl is Emilienne Cesil-Biegler, the daughter of Bouguereaus housekeeper at the time. What are your thoughts? ♦️The Punishment of Tityus♦️⠀ ⠀ 👨‍🎨By: Titian⠀ ⠀ 📍Location: @museoprado⠀ ⠀ 📚According to myth, Tityus was the son of Zeus and his mortal lover Elara, the daughter of King Orchomenus. In order to hide his pregnant lover from his fiercely jealous wife Hera, Zeus hid Elara deep, deep underground, where should would give birth with the greatest of pain. ⠀ Tityus proved to be a raging, violent, irrepressibly lustful creature, and upon discovering his existence Hera was only too glad to use the giant to her own ends. She inspired Tityus to try to rape Leto, the arrogant mother of Apollo (god of light, music, and poetry) and Artemis (goddess of wisdom and the hunt).⠀ The two gods were always anxious to defend their mother and easily shot Tityus down with their arrows. However, they were unable to kill the monster: as a son of Zeus, Tityus was immortal. At first it was more about poverty, but now I think it is mostly about piety. Millet made this painting as a commission for Thomas Gold Appleton, but for some reason he never came to collect it. After a while Millet decided to rework part of the painting and sell it to someone else. Originally, there were just these two people praying over a basket of potatoes they had harvested. It was then called ‘Prayer for the Potato Crop’. That title makes you think that they are praying for a better harvest, because what they have so far is not much. There is just one basket and a big bag on the wheelbarrow. But eventually Millet added the church tower in the background and renamed it ‘the Angelus’. That name refers to a prayer that catholics were required to say three times a day, at dawn, noon and dusk. Although in the 19th century it was usually at 6 am, noon and 6 pm. The prayer was announced by a bell that would ring in church towers. It would also be the end of the working day. So with that in mind, the painting is about the prayer at the end of a working day and therefore a pious moment. Apparently Millet himself said that when he had worked the fields as a child, his grandmother would always observe the Angelus so it was also a personal memory. The painting was sold and resold to several private owners, but even so, reproductions of it were also sold. Those became very popular as a religious painting. Many people commented that when they saw it, they could almost hear the distant bell ring. In fact, one of its previous owners, Jules van Praët, exchanged the painting for another Millet. When asked why he did that he said: “everyone thinks they can hear the nearby church bell tolling, and in the end, the constant ringing just became tiresome”. .
