We’re taking a break from looking back on our new writing productions, today we’re heading back to our 2015 production of Henry V (it would also have been Henry’s birthday today too) This production of Henry V opened at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in September 2015 before transferring to @barbicancentre in London as part of ‘King and Country: Shakespeares Great Cycle of Kings’, to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeares death in 2016. The production was broadcast live into cinemas worldwide and streamed into schools as well being made available on DVD. In early 2016, the show toured to China and the USA. Este é o cenário atual, porém, em 1922, comemorando o centenário da independência brasileira, a pintora Georgina de Albuquerque apresentou uma pintura única e um tanto quanto questionadora. “Sessão do Conselho de Estado” é uma tela a óleo que apresenta como marco da independência o ato da assinatura da mesma, realizada pela então Princesa Regente Dona Leopoldina. Esta versão de marco histórico sem a presença de D. Pedro I e sem o famoso grito “Independência ou Morte” eternizado por Pedro Américo apresenta na verdade a nova Imperatriz como a verdadeira heroína do Brasil. “Sessão do Conselho de Estado configurava uma posição de defesa da “nova mulher” ainda que por meio da associação à figura do passado Imperial.” – Ana Paula Cavalcanti Simioni. ♦️The Punishment of Tityus♦️⠀ ⠀ 👨🎨By: Titian⠀ ⠀ 📍Location: @museoprado⠀ ⠀ 📚According to myth, Tityus was the son of Zeus and his mortal lover Elara, the daughter of King Orchomenus. In order to hide his pregnant lover from his fiercely jealous wife Hera, Zeus hid Elara deep, deep underground, where should would give birth with the greatest of pain. ⠀ Tityus proved to be a raging, violent, irrepressibly lustful creature, and upon discovering his existence Hera was only too glad to use the giant to her own ends. She inspired Tityus to try to rape Leto, the arrogant mother of Apollo (god of light, music, and poetry) and Artemis (goddess of wisdom and the hunt).⠀ The two gods were always anxious to defend their mother and easily shot Tityus down with their arrows. However, they were unable to kill the monster: as a son of Zeus, Tityus was immortal. Hans Andersen Brendekilde (1857–1942): Worn Out, 1889, oil on canvas, 207 x 270 cm, Fyns Kunstmuseum, Odense, Denmark . . Another Danish painter and a close friend of Ring, Hans Andersen Brendekilde grew up among poor people in the countryside and depicted the true conditions of life in rural Denmark in the period from 1880 to 1920. In this heart-rending depiction of o rural scene, we see a day-labourer lying crumpled on the rock-strewn ground of the barren field where he had been working. His onerous task, with other peasants, would have been to remove the stones from the ground, prior to ploughing and planting, and put them in piles awaiting disposal. The field although barren takes up eighty per cent of the picture. Look at the detail Brendekilde has incorporated in his depiction of the ground. However, what is more emotive is the portrayal of the two figures in the foreground. The elderly peasant worker has stumbled and fallen to the ground. He is dressed in shabby clothes which are covered in dirt. One of his wooden clogs has fallen off during his fall. The heavy stones he had been carry in his apron, lie on the ground next to him. He had finally been overcome by exhaustion or maybe he has suffered a heart attack. A woman, maybe his wife or daughter or just a co-worker, has rushed to his aid. She is kneeling next to him and cradles his head. Her mouth is open wide as she screams for somebody to come and help. Her impassioned plea has yet to be answered and she is both overwhelmed with fear for the man and her own helplessness. - @painters.paintings on Instagram
