🗒️ ✍🏻 “El hombre que fue a esperarme al aeropuerto de Cambá Punta, en Corrientes era un antiguo poblador de esa región, un tipo experto.” “Así que piensa entrar al Iberá”, me dijo. “Si puedo” contesté. “¿Qué equipo trae?”, quiso saber. “Esto” (le mostré una bolsita de plástico con el cepillo de dientes y la máquina de afeitar). “Entrar es fácil – me alentó-, lo difícil es salir”.” 👉🏻 Ya en el año 1966, Iberá era catalogado (así como lo sigue siendo ahora incluso por la National Geographic) como uno de los últimos lugares salvajes del planeta; así lo retrataba en sus escritos la expedición del periodista Rodolfo Walsh por la región. En sus crónicas dejaba bien en claro el modo de vida en estas tierras que antes la habitaban mariscadores, los cuales se adentraban en los esteros por semanas buscando piezas animales para vender sus carnes y cueros a compradores de la ciudad 🏢🏢🏢. También refleja el futuro incierto para esta región 🤔, en la cual todavía no se decidía si secar todas las lagunas para así tener más tierras para pastoreo de ganado y producción de arroz, o si capaz llenar de agua toda la zona y construir diques para el aprovechamiento del agua, e incluso si elevar caminos terraplén o crear pequeños puertos que unieran distintos poblados en medio del estero. Sin duda los recursos de inversión que se hubiesen necesitado eran cifras astronómicas, lo cual hacía que esos planes sólo quedaran en la cabeza de quienes los pensaban 🙌🏻. Para la suerte del Yverá 🌅, el camino de la conservación se fue abriendo una brecha con el correr de los años. El cazador se convirtió en Guardaparque. El Iberá fue declarado Reserva Natural Provincial. Guárico. Vástago de Casildo Laya y de María Albertina Loyola. Entonó coplas llaneras desde niño y participó en bailes al arribar a la adolescencia. Luego se trasladó a Caracas en 1951 para comenzar una nueva etapa como joropero. Grabó e hizo famosos los temas musicales: El gavilán, Tierra Negra, Pasaje Nº 1, El carnaval, San Rafael, El sancocho y El pabellón, entre otros. Cantó con el arpista y compositor Juan Vicente Torrealba e Ignacio Ventura Figueredo, El indio Figueredo; con quien grabó las composiciones siguientes: El gabán y La verdolaga. Cuando disolvió su colaboración musical con El indio Figueredo, Loyola creó su propia agrupación musical en 1954, Los Guariqueños, grabando: Contramarcado, Buenos aires llaneros, Sentimiento llanero, Corrío Apureño, El Guachamarón, El Tigre de Masaguarito, La Catira Marmoleña. Es interesante reseñar los nombres de muchos arpistas que le acompañaron en ciertas etapas de su exitosa carrera musical, entre los que hallamos a Cosme Pérez, Eduardo Pérez, Manuel Luna, José Ángel Rengifo, Andrés Vera, José Ramón Valera, Rigoberto Valera, Omar Moreno Gil, Urbino Ruiz y Eudes Álvarez; interpretando temas como La catira, Pajarillo, La paraulata, La quirpa, El carnaval, Versos tristes, Puerto Miranda, Cajón de Arauca apureño, La guayaba, entre otros. El cantante de música llanera Ángel Custodio Loyola falleció el 24 de septiembre de 1985, víctima de un infarto al miocardio, en su casa en Cagua, Edo. Aragua. Fue sepultado en el Cementerio Metropolitano de Maracay, Edo. Aragua; y luego con autorización de los familiares, sus restos fueron exhumados y trasladados al Cementerio General de Calabozo, Edo. Being oriented to a particular place means knowing how to find one’s way and how to pace oneself in order to make or avoid encounters with other acknowledged beings who share the space. Today a whole network of new itineraries and directions have been grafted onto the landscapes of Chitwan. The changes have come crashing with new tools for churning the earth, with visions of Nepal’s headlong leap across the horizon of progress and prosperity. Contemporary Nepalis think of Chitwan as the place where wilderness has been preserved for viewing, but its recent history is a chronicle of mounting ecological crises and crumbling environmental responses: large-scale deforestation, intensification of land use, contamination, species extinction, destruction of homes and habitat. These are episodes of the Anthropocene, the word we use to designate the present condition in which humanity is—willfully, but also in ways beyond their control—engineering the very conditions of life and death on Earth, whose unmitigated ambitions have penetrated the core of geophysical dynamics. The dramatic consequences of climate change aside, the Anthropocene is also the story of how entire sensoriums of living, surviving, and thriving are disposed for the reproduction of capital. 24 September, enam puluh tahun lalu, Bung Karno mengesahkan Undang-Undang No. 5 Tahun 1960 tentang Peraturan Dasar Pokok-Pokok Agraria (UUPA). Orang menamai hari itu sebagai kemenangan kaum tani, awal mula hari tani yang—jika bukan agendanya—peringatannya masih eksis sampai detik ini. Betapa penting posisi UUPA dalam agenda reforma agraria di Indonesia. Reforma agraria sejati mensyaratkan adanya landreform—perombakan struktur penguasaan, pemilikan, dan pemanfaatan tanah. Maka tak terlalu mengherankan, ketika UUPA masih dirancang, segera bermunculan kritik yang menamai landreform sebagai agenda komunis, yang dijawab Bung Karno: landreform sekali-kali bukan agenda komunis, sebab hak milik tanah diakui, hanya luasnya diatur. Bung Karno menyebut revolusi kala itu mutlak memerlukan landreform—Revolusi Indonesia tanpa landreform sama saja dengan gedung tanpa alas, sama saja pohon tanpa batang, sama saja dengan omong besar tanpa isi! Adalah mimpi Bung Karno agar kepemilikan tanah tidak terkonsentrasi pada sesuatu golongan, terlebih golongan yang berambisi meraup keuntungan tanpa mengeluarkan setetes pun keringat. Ya! Tanah tidak boleh menjadi alat penghisapan! Tanah untuk tani! Tanah untuk mereka yang betul-betul menggarap tanah! Tanah tidak untuk mereka yang dengan duduk ongkang-ongkang menjadi gemuk-gendut karena menghisap keringatnya orang-orang yang disuruh menggarap tanah itu! On this day in 1880, Abraham Ulrikab and 7 other Labrador Inuit arrived in Europe as part of an ethnographic show (now called human zoos). All eight would die from smallpox. Of the 35,000 people exhibited in human zoos from the 1870s to 1950s, Abraham is one of a handful to have a diary describing his experience. Our article on The Canadian Encyclopedia, link in our bio, tells his story. It features internationally acclaimed dancers José Manero and Paquita del Rey celebrating Old Spanish Days. In 1940, they were hired to perform for the “Nacimiento de Santa Barbara,” a popular nighttime review at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. Manero became a mainstay of Fiesta dance over the next two decades in his own performances, and through generations of students still dancing today.
