Intricate and Beautifully carved Makara Thorana on the entrance to the Garbhagudi of Sri Chennakeshava temple, Belur. The Doorway Lintel on the Garbhagudi towards east is decorated with Makara Torana. Lord Vishnu along with his consort Lakshmi is seated within the Prabhavali (arch). Vishnu and Lakshmi are flanked by Chamara Sundaris on both the sides and below them is Garuda saluting his master. On both the sides of the panel are Varuna and Varuni seated on Makaras. From the mouth of Makaras extends a Thorana called Makara Thorana which surrounds the Prabhavali. The Dashavataras ( Ten avatars or forms of Lord Vishnu) adorns the Makara Thorana. The center of Makara Thorana has a Kirthimukha. Two Lions are flanked above the Makara Thorana. Below the Vishnu and Lakshmi panel is a band which has 12 three dimensional figurines of dancers and musicians. These figurines depicts the state of joyfulness while serving lord. Pancha Padmas ( 5 Lotus ) are carved below the musicians and damcers panel. These Pancha Padmas symbolises the Pancha Bhoothas. Two Lions are flanked on bothe the sides of lower band. . . Ancient history of Khajuraho the Chandela rulers built the enthralling temples at Khajuraho over a period of 100 years from 950 AD to 1050 AD. Khajuraho was the cultural capital of the Chandela Rajputs, the Hindu dynasty that ruled over the region from the 10th-12th centuries. The political capital of the Chandelas was Kalinjar. Later the capital was moved to Mahoba, but Khajuraho continued to find patronage for some time. It fell into neglect and dispair much later by medieval period.The most intriguing aspect about these temples is the choice of location, as there is nothing exceptional about Khajuraho as a place nor is there as sizeable population around the city. The Chandelas were followers of the Tantric cult, which believed that gratification of earthly desires is the first step towards salvation. Unfortunately, closures of public spaces and workplaces have been challenging with severe economic impacts. This is especially hard on emerging economies where people simply cannot afford to stay home because many jobs cannot be done remotely. As a result, lockdowns involving workplace and school closures lead to large reductions in economic activity, resulting in very high costs, and workplace closures aren’t even very effective at controlling transmission. SriRangam, A southern India island town located on the banks of the river Kaveri has a famous temple of Sri Ranganathaswamy , also known as Thiruvaranga Tirupati, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Constructed in Dravidian style of architecture, it is largest functioning temple complex in the world with its Sapta-Prakaram formation, a temple centred settlement pattern that comprises of Sapta (seven) concentric rectangular enclosures or prakarams formed by thick and huge rampart walls that run round the sanctum sanctorum in which the deity presides. While the inner five enclosures of the complex constitute the temple, the outer two enclosures function as the settlement. Thus, the distinction between the temple and the settlement gets blurred and the temple is also referred to as Srirangam many a times. The temple complex is 156 acres in extent. The temple complex is embellished with 21 Gopurams. The 236 feet high, 13 storeyed Rajagopuram is the largest gopuram in Asia. Evidences prove the origin of the temple in 1st century CE during the Sangam period (3rd Century BCE – 45th Century E). More importantly, it is not just a temple but a temple-town, unique in its Sapta-Prakaram formation, a temple centred settlement pattern that comprises of Sapta (seven) concentric rectangular enclosures or prakarams formed by thick and huge rampart walls that run round the sanctum sanctorum in which the deity presides. The temple is now dedicated to a goddess called Harshat Mata, although some art historians theorize that it was originally a Vaishnavite shrine.⠀ ⠀ The original Harshat Mata temple has been ruined and modified over several centuries.No epigraphic evidence been found regarding the construction of the temple or the Chand Baori stepwell connected with it. Based on similarities in style and carvings with the terraced temples of Paranagar and Mandore, the Baodi can be dated to 8th-9th century. ⠀ ⠀ The builder of the original temple is unknown. According to Agrawala, the sculptures are representative of the early Gurjara-Pratihara art. Reitz theorizes that the temple may have been constructed under the patronage of a local Chahamana prince (possibly Guvaka I) with support of his Gurjara-Pratihara overlord. Atherton notes that the lack of adequate historical information prevents attribution of the temple to a particular ruler with certainty, but it is more likely that the Gurjara-Pratiharas were the patrons of the temple, with Nagabhata II being the best candidate.⠀ ⠀ The entrance to the temple faces east, towards the rising sun. The temple complex is built on two broad stepped terraces (jagati), which originally included a circumambulatory path, and are now partially ruined. The boundary of the lower terrace has a relatively plain set of foundation and base moldings (vedibandha), which have decorative patterns at the top. The ruins of two small shrines flank the entrance stairway. The upper terrace is far more decorated, but is largely destroyed; the only image that remains intact is of Narasimha flanked by warriors. ⠀ ⠀ In the 20th century, the sanctum had a Durga idol, which was stolen. This is a 13th century AD sculpture of a lady and Surya from Konark. Both are bejewelled with elaborate neck and head ornamentation. From time immemorial sculptors have been capturing various aspects of human life through their artworks, references such as these gives a glimpse of the continuity in the art form of jewellery making, while also documenting the everyday inspiration of an artist. The other image of a necklace in the form of an openwork torque in five hinged sections is an excellent example of inspiration and continuity in art forms. In the front, the necklace is set with white sapphires in a design of seven flowers with an octagonal stone in the middle and surrounded with petals and meandering creepers and leaves all set with white sapphires. On either side of the center flower there is a graceful peacock with head turned back and a single pearl positioned on top in the middle and a pear-shaped floral pendant suspended below. Konark Sun Temple is one of the most spectacular sights in odisha. The temple is designed in odisha style of architecture or KALINGA ARCHITECTURE & represent a massive chariot with 2 rows of 12 giant stone wheels on each side (total 24 wheels) that are drawn by a set of seven stone horses. The size of the wheel is of 9 feet 9 inches in diameter & each one of them having 8 wider spokes & 8 thinner spokes. According to some folks, the 7 horses represent the days of the week while 12 pairs of wheel signifies 12 months & 24 wheels represent 24 hours of a day & the 8 spokes signifies 8 prahars of a day. According to some others these wheels portray the cycle of creation, preservation, and achievement of realisation. In other words these wheels may represent 12 zodiac signs as well. Hace unas semanas relaté la travesía compartiendo auto junto a 23 personas para llegar a los templos de Khajuraho, India; pero un detalle no menor fue la vuelta hacia donde nos alojábamos⁣ ⁣ Tras el consejo de no hacer un cambio de buses de noche, luego de recorrer los templos, fuimos a la estación de trenes (sacar el ticket ya fue toda una aventura) Allí, la gente se empujaba para alcanzar las puertas de los vagones (era hacer lo mismo o perder el último tren de regreso de la noche). Una vez dentro, logramos conseguir las literas de arriba. Nunca imaginamos que estaríamos 5 horas con las piernas sin estirar o que en cada litera irían 5 o 6 personas.⁣ ⁣ La cantidad de gente era inaudita. El calor y los olores decían presente. Una madre lloraba con su bebé en brazos, ancianos sentados en el piso del vagón, bebés con calor jugando entre sacos de granos, un tren parado una hora en una estación fantasma, las piernas agarrotadas sin poder ser estiradas. El trayecto osciló entre risas, miradas de curiosidad y dolores en el cuerpo. ⁣ ⁣ Noche cerrada y estaciones sin iluminar. Imposible leer los carteles de las estaciones. Menos encontrar a alguien que hablase inglés para consultarle cuándo debíamos bajar. ⁣ ⁣ Pero algo nos ayudó; el destino, la Virgen María, Mahoma, Alá, Ganesha o la suerte misma hicieron que nos entendieran. ⁣ ⁣ Bajar de la litera fue otro tema. Por fortuna estábamos cerca de la puerta. Aún así recuerden: gente, gente y más gente, equipajes por doquier, bolsas de granos y hasta gallinas que tuvimos que sortear para alcanzar el andén.⁣ ⁣ Travesía lograda. Y por supuesto que recordamos los maravillosos templos de Khajuraho. KONARK SUN TEMPLE Konark is also known as Arkakshetra, Black Pagoda (due to black tower) or Kainapara. Ark (Sun) Kon (Corner) Kshetra (place). Its part of UNESCO World heritage from 1984 n now entrusted to ASI. Its a 13th century Sun temple built by Narasimha Deva I. Its 70kms from Bhubaneshwar n 35kms from Puri. On map it almost forms a triangle. The first pic shows the Audience Hall (128 ft) n not the Main Sanctum (229 ft). The sanctum is erased to ground by Invaders. The other small portions surviving are Dancing Hall (Natya Mandir) n Dining Hall (Bhoga Mantapa). There was 7 horse with 24 wheels chariot among which only one horse survives n few wheels. The famous Wheel depicting the mundane is world famous. It is believed that it took 12 years with 1200 artisans to complete this grandeur. Ironically ASI is doing chemical washing past 12 years! What’s not to love about a bustling city, when you are hanging out with friends, gobbling Indian street foods at odd hours, watching Bollywood movies, saving some damsel in distress, aimlessly driving down the highways, revolting and just about living the definition of carefree in real sense. ❇️Travelers Posts❇️ Loc: Pattadakkal Author: @sajnaali . Visiting Badami is incomplete without visiting the previous capitals of Chalukyas - Pattadakkal and Aihole. The first day leisurely spent time at Badami and in advance enquired to the hotel manager about the transportation facility to Pattadakkal. There was buses and shared autos. I choose the latter one. It was the first time experience in travel life to enjoy a ride with locals. Time went so fast as I was playing with the twins kids in the auto. Pattadakkal has a limited source of transportation to Aihole but I wasnt worried about that but got into the main temple complex which consists of 10 temples. The garden around was well maintained and it was beautiful. There was no much crowd as visitors here and history says crowning of Chalukya kings used to happen here, thats how it got the name Pattadakkal. Later due to the water availability they moved the capital to Badami. It was a short and 2-hour visit. Before I stepped out of the compound, I noticed the lady with a bottle of local yoghurt. Happy World Tourism Day! Khajuraho - Backpacking tips and what not :! Tips for solo traveller and others :⁣ ⁣ ✅ Khajuraho is well planned and tourist friendly. All information is online. It is overpriced for the most part. If on budget do your homework.⁣ ✅ Homestays are the best options for budget travellers. Staying close to the western gate will give you good deal. ⁣ ✅ They have a zostel, but I found it catering to foreign crowd and full of youngsters wanting to spend time with ⁣ Foreigners.⁣ ✅ Homestays can be arranged for as little as 500 a night with Western Toilet. Cheaper if you are ready to squat :) - I stayed at Junkie House and was happy to be there.⁣ ✅ Train is the cheapest way to get to Khajuraho and there are 2 trains from Jhansi. ⁣ ✅ Shared auto will get you to from station to temple for 20 bucks. ⁣ ✅ 3 nights or 2 whole days are more than enough ⁣ ✅ If you stay close to Western group of temples - All temples can be covered by feet apart from the south group of temples ( but trust me if you like to hike you can do those are well by feet ) ⁣ ✅ Ranhe falls will cost you a lot by auto or taxi. If you don’t find travel partners to share cost - just rent a bike and go explore - remember you have to pay the entry fee at part as well. So if you go by auto or car you will be paying a higher entry fee. ⁣ ✅ Light and sound show is a good investment.⁣ ✅ Food is extremely touristy but I am a foodie and I opted for spending as they have a authentic Italian Restaurant - #Mediterranio - they make their own pizza sauce and pizza dough too! ⁣ Marwari ki Thali was also good as for Indian food. Rajah Cafe caters to rich Indian family crowd and I found it extremely average when it came to food. Hoyasaleshwara Temple in Halebeedu, Karnataka. Often referred to as the Climax of Architecture in Southern India Hoysaleswara Temple is one amongst the largest shrines that are dedicated to Lord Shiva in South India. In the 12th century, the temple was built during the rule of King Vishnuvardhana of Hoysala Empire. The construction of this marvelous shrine got completed in 1121 CE. It is believed that the temple derived its name from Vishnuvardhana Hoysaleswara, the presiding ruler in those times. However, the erection of the temple was started and sponsored by the affluent Shaiva citizens (mainly Ketamalla and Kesarasetti) of Halebid. At the time of construction, a tough competition held between Hoysaleswara Temple and Chennakesava Temple at Belur. Hoysaleswara Temple witnessed ransack of loot and raid by the Muslim invaders in the early 14th century. First ever documentation of some of the oldest wall paintings of Nubra - and of Ladakh as a whole! This painted chorten was noticed on Independence Day, during surveys I currently conduct for the next INTACH volume on the historical sites of Ladakh. After a preliminary look at the pictures, the art historian Nils Martin assessed that these paintings are likely from the 10th-11th centuries. In Ladakh, the oldest wall paintings known until now are those of Malakartse chorten (near Zangla, Zanskar), published by Rob Linrothe in 2007 in his article A Winter in the Field. Both the paintings of this post and of Malakartse are older than the Alchi Group of Monuments, which were built by members of the famous Bro and Smer families in the 12th and 13th centuries. In order to avoid the degradation of the paintings that would result from too many visitors, the location is not indicated in this post until proper conservation is completed. Out of all the places to be visited at Polonnaruwa my favourite place would be the Thivanka Pilima Geya which was built by King Parakramabahu as a part of the Jethavanarama Complex. I personally like it because of the frescos inside the walls of the image house which depict Jathaka stories (prior births of Lord Buddha before enlightenment). If you observe closely you can see how much care they have given into drawing these paintings by the graceful expressions on the faces of the gods, the dramatic poses in which their bodies have been cast and the way in which delicate fingers are held in dramatic mudras. This is the only place where you can see well preserved paintings of Polonnaruwa era where most people tend to omit this place as its at the very end of the Polonnaruwa ruin complex. Whenever I go to visit Polonnaruwa ruins I definitely start off at the Thivanka image house as I spend sooo much time observing the paintings since capturing these paintings are not allowed I try to remember all the paintings in my head, and I would request all who visit to the ruin complex to make it a must to visit this place. When talking about the image house it is one of the three vaulted-roof shrines(Gedige) seen at Polonnaruwa where the roof and the walls were built completely by bricks. The image house mainly consist of four parts, namely, the sanctum(Garbhagrha), the vestibule(Antarala), the Mandala and the entrance porch. As you enter you can see a giant Buddha statue bent at three places(reason to why its called Thivanka) standing on a lotus base in the Garbhagrha(sanctum). The Buddha statue has been built attached to a screen wall and between the screen wall and the inner side of the rear wall of the image house is a narrow ambulatory. Beside the narrow ambulatory at the ground level it is said that there was another ambulatory around the statue on the upper level as well.
