Those who have a voice must speak for those who are voiceless- Saint Oscar Romero As the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the city, I bring to you a true story that perhaps may warm the cockles of your heart. And so it came to be one day that my husband and I decided to pick up kirana as we usually do on a Saturday. We went down to the parking lot to get our car and Sir Don [see earlier posts] promptly followed us got into the back seat. No amount of cajoling and telling him that there was lockdown and that there was a virus troubling the city and that he needed to let us go by ourselves helped. He just stayed put in the back seat and looked at us with puppy eyes. We knew that car rides scared him beyond five minutes and didn’t know what to do. I then hit upon a plan. We drove in the lane behind our home and stopped after a few buildings and I got off. I opened the back door and Sir Don got off too. I quickly reentered the car and we drove off knowing well that the street smart Sir Don would find his way back home and wait for us. This was his hunting ground. In addition, he had also met Lizzie his girlfriend where we dropped him and they were chatting as we drove off. We were however least prepared for what happened next! A scream resonated through air followed by the choicest Bawa abuses that I had heard in a long time. An old man came chasing our car with a stick and abused us for abandoning a dog in the midst of a pandemic! He told us [what gaalis!] that we were dishonorable and callous and would rot in hell. STATE SEIZURE UPDATE: On March 11th, the ARLGP acquired temporary custody of 16 animals seized from a home in Dexter by the State of Maine Animal Welfare Department. 9 dogs, 3 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs and 2 birds were transferred to our care until a court hearing would determine their future. • It is difficult – and heartbreaking -- to describe the state these animals were in. For many of our team members, these were some of the worst conditions we had seen pets arrive in. Each of them required urgent, emergency care the moment they came through our doors. We worked quickly and diligently in teams assessing each animal and treating their physical wounds and infections. We worked long into the night to ensure each animal was as comfortable as we could make them. Sadly, one guinea pig’s prognosis was grave, and he was humanely euthanized. • Because of COVID-19 and the delays it has caused the Maine court system, we have been caring for these animals for the past 167 days. Yesterday afternoon we were awarded permanent custody of all 15 animals and can finally begin the process of readying them for adoption. • Their veterinary needs are extensive. We have performed several biopsies and mass removals to diagnose advanced conditions. We have a dog in need of entropion eye surgery due to trauma. We are treating mange and severe skin conditions. Some have extreme separation anxiety that will require ongoing behavioral support. We will find your FOREVER home this time. 🥺 No negative comments, Daisy is back at no fault of her own. For the potential adopters out there, PLEASE be sure that when you are considering adopting a dog from us that you are making a LIFETIME COMMITMENT. Do not even reach out if you are not ready for this commitment. We allow two week home trials for our adult adoptions. By the end of the two weeks, if you are not willing to do whatever it takes, DO NOT ADOPT. These dogs have been through way too much already to be coming back to rescue after being in a home for 5 months. Dogs are not disposable. If you aren’t willing to go over and beyond for them, just like you would your children, do not adopt. Our Sweet Angel and Mama to 10 beautiful puppies- RIO ❤️. As excited as we are to find all 10 puppies the perfect home, we are just as excited to find Rio the perfect home. Rio was dumped at a neighbors house back in March. The neighbor surrendered her to us with little information other than that the family moved and took the other dog they owned with them, leaving her behind. A few weeks after arriving at our rescue, we realized that she was pregnant. She was scared, stressed out, confused, HUNGRY and only about a year old. She’s now around a year and a half and has proven herself to be a selfless and exceptional mama! Wenn sie die Wahl zwischen Futter und Spiel hat, wählt sie das Spielen. 3. Fanny ist sehr selbständig und macht sich schnell neue Freunde. Aber das wisst ihr ja! 🥰 4. Ihr Lieblingsspielzeug ist ein Kronkorken. #BerlinerKind 5. Fanny ist eine kleine Diva. Sie legt sich gern auf die Couch, Sessel oder Kissen und „putzt“ ziemlich intensiv ihr Bettchen bevor sie sich reinlegt. 6. Sie liebt die Wärme und somit auch das Sonnenbaden oder eine Fußbodenheizung. 7. Fannys lieblings Snacks sind gekochte Kartoffeln, Natur Tofu und Bananen😻. Carmen (A1575305) Carmen is an absolute volunteer favorite! She was previously at the shelter last Fall and she got adopted by a family who adored her. She was fantastic with all of them, including the young children. She was completely housebroken and never had any issues with destructiveness. She was practically perfect! Unfortunately, there was one issue. Although she was fine meeting people away from the home, when strangers came to the house, she became territorial and defensive. She actually bit a couple of people under these circumstances, including a trainer who was there to address the issue. As a result, even though it broke their hearts, the family felt they had to surrender her to the shelter. Because of the bite history, Carmen is now RESCUE ONLY and cannot be adopted to the public. I suspect that, in a different home with more confident owners, she may not exhibit the same behavior. Even if she does, though, it is a behavior that can easily be managed if not “fixed”. The family can simply put her in a crate or in another room any time strangers come by. Problem solved! Rescues, this is a dog who is worth taking a chance on! Carmen is 5 years old and already spayed. Introducing Miss Willow While at the vets today with my bunny this sweet little girl was brought in as a stray - as the obsessed animal person that I am I asked to take her home to bring her to health and find her a home. Willow weighs only 1.8kg (my rabbit is 2.2kg for comparison) and possibly has worms. We have no idea when her last meal, drink or warm night was. She has been given flea and worming treatment, a nice bath, a big bowl of water and some yummy food to fatten her up. She will have a comfy bed tonight and start to learn how to be loved. We don’t know anything about her but after bringing her home have discovered she is such a sweet soul who has so much love to give. Recently, LeeLee, an adorable little hound mix, was hit by a car on a Saturday night. Her injuries included severe lacerations, extensive road rash and her right eye was knocked out of its socket. ⠀ ⠀ LeeLee’s family frantically called every vet clinic they knew of to see if anyone could help, but due to the pandemic they were unable to access affordable care for their beloved pet. ⠀ ⠀ Fortunately, one vet referred LeeLee to the Houston PetSet urgent care program, and the Laurels House veterinary team was able to immediately provide all the care she required. ⠀ ⠀ She received surgery to replace her right eye into the correct position, as well as several days of wound management prior to surgical closure of her worst wounds. They couldn’t be more different. 😂🤣When our first dog died from cancer, we learned so much. It felt like everyone knew kibble had been linked to cancer except us. I felt incredible guilt. Guilt/blame is a normal part of grief, but is a phase and not something we want to hold onto. I didn’t hold onto it because I knew it was a way of connecting me to her loss. I also knew that had I known different, I would have done different. Moreover, she was happy. She lived with us for seven years and we only spent one night apart. She went to the Hoover Dam, the Bellagio, the beach, the mountains, and saw snow. She had an amazing life with us and she loved every minute of it. That is what we give our pets. Those are the things that matter most. Of course now, we focus on all of that AND nutrition lol. But our journey wasn’t immediate. When our dog died we knew about raw diets and “better kibble.” We couldn’t afford raw at the time so we picked the upgraded kibble. Over the years we continued to upgrade our kibble to better and better versions. We got to the point where we were spending an inordinate amount of money on kibble and in hindsight, I’m not sure it was any “better” than I thought. I’ll talk more about this later when I address DCM, but I digress. Finally, a dear friend told us about home cooking real food and using @justfoodfordogs chicken treats. Calista was getting multiple tumors regularly at this point so we started the transition with her first. It was a game changer. From there it progressed and now we are feeding both dogs JFFD. I share this because wherever you are on this journey, I want you to know we have been there too. It should be simple and clear, but it isn’t. I always hesitate sharing because I don’t want anyone to feel pressure. I also know that I wish I had known this information sooner. If you ever have questions, I will do my best to answer openly, honestly, and always with humility. If we’re being honest, when the Coronavirus became serious, in Chicago, we were terrified about what it would mean for our homeless pets. Hello Super Kind Humans I am Bubbly Bubbles and I SO NEED YOUR HELP! You see I was living in a homeless encampment in Watts with a lot of people who are down on their luck. It was not a very nice place to be but its all I had so I had to make due with the hand that life had dealt me. I am such a sweet and submissive pibble girl that I kept getting attacked by the other dogs there and there was no one to keep me safe. Finally a Good Samaritan saw what was going on called the Animal Control People and somehow got thru to them and boy did I get lucky, they actually came and got me and took me to the dog pound. I know, I KNOW the pound is not a good place for a dog like me to end up at but my wounds were totally icky and infected so it was better than a slow death on the streets! ( I have to try and look at the bright side) They cleaned my wounds, put awful drains in me and basically thats the best they could do. I am so SAD, DEPRESSED and SCARED. I REALLY want OUT of this place but the rescue needs some HELP with funds to get me out and to the DOCTOR! I am around 7 years and I LOVE humans and my tail never stops wagging! CAN YOU HELP ME? We would like to give a tongue out and a big ‘Screw you!’ to Parvovirus. These are our #SuperheroSatos who were rescued almost three weeks ago in horrific condition. There were originally five of them and tragically we lost two to parvovirus. Their tiny frail bodies had already been through so much and were riddled with parasites on top of being emaciated. Pet of the Day! Hershey is a very handsome, 2 year old pit mix. He was adopted from us as a puppy, returned, then adopted and returned once more. He is housetrained and crate trained. He knows basic commands like sit, stay, come, paw, wait, and lay down. He also knows “leave it” and “drop it”. Hershey loves chew toys and being loved on. Hershey walks well on a leash after his initial excitement of being outside subsides. He LOVES going on car rides! Hershey is a beautiful and smart alpha dog. He requires an alpha owner who will commit to his training. We have an amazing trainer that has worked with him. We will require whomever adopts him to continue his training. When Hershey has a strong leader to rely on, he is happy and secure. When he doesn’t, he feels the need to lash out. Hershey needs a home without children, cats, or dogs. Patty Shenker kept Peepers locked up in boarding for 5 years without medical care. After Peepers was released, Shenker agreed to fund all of Peepers medical care - which is the reason Vice was able to adopt Peepers (Vice had spent all of his money on his previous dogs care). Since Peepers was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2019, Shenker has broken her promise to finance Peepers care. She would rather Peepers had never received chemotherapy and just died last summer. Thanks to her treatment, Peepers was in remission from lymphoma for 16 months. Though her cancer has resurfaced, she has a very strong 85% chance of beating it a second time. Vice consulted with the top oncologists in Los Angeles, and Peepers is now under the very excellent care of Dr. Turner at Metropolitan Animal Specialty Hospital. Everyone is so happy that the treatments went well last year and are continuing to go well now with this second round of CHOP treatment. Peepers is already in remission, and she will continue with her treatment for a year. Dr. Turner and her staff at MASH are giving Peepers a longer lease on life so that she can enjoy more love, cuddles, treats, and sniffs around the yard. - @peepersfriends on Instagram
With my good buddy @tripawd_cooper . I’ve known Cooper since the day I was rescued. He’s always sweet and minds his business. We’ve been buddies for almost 17 months now and I’ve learned a lot from him. However, he’s really good at stealing attention without even being rude or pushy 😏! When I was first rescued I was a little pup, Cooper was huge! I grew up fast to oversize all the other rescues! Good thing my rescuers are not considering putting me on diet 😬 they think it might be very stressful for me. Marigold has been adopted! Our staff could not be more excited for this special girl (check out the adoption staff in the background 🤣). Marigold is an older gal who took a little longer to get adopted. She patiently waited for her perfect home for weeks until finally a wonderful family fell in love with her. And we think the feeling is mutual.😍🐶😍 We know it couldnt have happened to a more deserving dog. Marigold came to AHS after a Good Samaritan found her as an injured stray. She was struggling to walk, had wounds on her neck, had an umbilical hernia, and was very stressed. For more than three weeks, the veterinary staff at AHS Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ nursed her back to health. Today marked the end of my time at VCA. I met incredible doctors, amazing techs, and overall the best team I’ve ever worked with. I’m happy that VCA gave a newbie RVT like me a chance to grow, learn, and shadow some amazing techs. I’m grateful for those who took the time to teach me and guide me through any questions I had, even when the hospital was overflowing with patients. I got the chance to work on intense cases and see first hand what hard work and good medicine looks like. Most importantly I made amazing friends who constantly pushed me to be better and learn, who are extremely supportive, who appreciate hard work, who showed me what dedication is, and for all of that I thank you. I will miss those long shifts, crazy shifts, overwhelming shifts, slow shifts, who knows what will come through the door shifts. Spayed Female *URGENT: AVA HAS BEEN RED-LISTED AND NEEDS OUT ASAP! * Please help spread the word about our sweet Ava, a loving and playful girl, who’s been at the shelter since Feb. 2020! She’s been RED LISTED and is in danger of being euthanized WITHIN 48 hours because she’s highly distressed and going kennel crazy. (This is sadly very common for long timers who’re unable to get the daily outings every pup needs to thrive.) Once Ava is out of her kennel, staff and volunteers all agree she’s a total lap dog who’s highly engaged and responsive to people. Despite her age, she acts like a pup half her age, loves to play fetch and would enjoy lots of walks or hikes. But her FAVORITE thing in the world is giving and getting love. She eats up head and belly rubs and will give lots of hugs and kisses in return. While Ava is awesome with humans, she should be the only dog in the house. She was surrendered with her ‘brother’ Carl #A1160213 after they escaped and got into an altercation with their neighbor’s dog. (This wasn’t the first time as they developed a pack mentality and fed off each other’s energy.) However, the two have been separated at the shelter, and before the shutdown, Ava was walked with other big dogs and non-reactive. One of Ava’s original owners -- who helped raise her and Carl for the first few years of life and lost ‘custody’ after a breakup -- was devastated to learn the pair were at the shelter. She couldn’t take either dog where she lived, but she began taking them out on day trips before the shutdown. She shared that Ava is as loving as ever, enjoys car rides; knows basic commands (sit, down, stay and shake), is treat motivated and was non-reactive to people and other dogs on her trips away from the shelter. Ava’s Medical Notes: 1) Multifocal pigmented skin lesions on medial R thigh – should be evaluated by private vet 2) Weight loss, acceptable BCS at this time 3) Mild tail tip injury (happy tail) We adore Ava and are heartbroken to think that all the time she’s spent in a kennel waiting for a new loving home has been in vain. RESCUE STORY This adorable friend is called Devi. Swipe to see her before and after photos. 🐾 Devi is a small western breed. She has been neglected and dumped by her former owners. Her rescuers were on a day trip to Ubud, Bali when they found her. It was not their first time saving a dog off the streets, so they already knew the drill. This gorgeous girl is Sasha! Shes a 3.5 year old, 55lb, Shepherd mix with the most adorable ears and beautiful coat! Sasha loves to be outside playing or just laying in the sun and would love a home with a yard or an active runner. She doesnt love storms but who can blame her? An ACC Volunteer Writes: If there is anything cuter than a dog that walks around with a toy, its an 83 lb dog with his purple stuffed dino. We gave Papo his dino earlier this week, and kicked off a friendship for the ages. He walked around proudly, taking his new friend on laps around the yard, and stopping to show it to us each round. Later in the week he hopped out of his kennel for a walk, and in a show of true best friendship turned around to grab his dino for the stroll. Because everything is better with friends, and we are happy to have made a new friend in this gentle giant.⠀ ⠀ In his previous home, Papo lived and grew up with an infant who is now 7, and two other kids now aged 10 and 15. They describe him as relaxed, playful, and tolerant with the kids throughout their ages, though, for now, the shelter is recommending Papo go to a home with older kids. His previous family also tell us he is friendly with strangers, is gentle, and has medium energy levels with some bouts of exuberance. Papo enjoys a game of tug, squeaky toys, and bones, is house trained and knows cues for sit, down, come, stay, heel, and shake!
