ON THIS DAY… in 1916, Yelcho arrived into Punta Arenas in Chile. Onboard the vessel was the crew who had left England with Ernest Shackleton two years earlier, 22 of whom had been stranded on Elephant Island for 137 days, with little to keep them going other than the belief that their leader would one day return to rescue them. On 30 August 1916, that day came. - The Yelcho rescue was all the more impressive given that the vessel was deemed unfit for purpose prior to departure; her steel-built steamer was not strengthened against the thick ice and she had no proper heating system. But Shackleton insisted on going. “I could not content myself to wait,” he wrote, “knowing that six hundred miles away my comrades were in dire need.” - #shackleton #ernestshackleton #imperialtransantarctic #antarctica #polarexploration #endurance - @shackletonlondon on Instagram

Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

The day everything went wrong for the RAF, the battle of Barking Creek. We are at dawn, the 6th of september, 1939. The war has just been declared on Germany. At RAF Hornchurch and North Weald Airbases in South East England, all base personnel are on alert. Shortly after 6 a.m., a faulty radar announced the arrival of unidentified planes. While only a few planes would have been sufficient, an entire squadron of Hurricanes from North Weald Airfield and other Spitfires from Hornchurch Airfield took off. But while the ennemy planes did not actually exist; 2 hurricanes piloted by the aviator Rose and officer Hutlon-Harrop took off from their bases in North Weald without being instructed to do so and tried to catch up with the planes that had left previously. The rest was a disaster. The anti-aircraft guns, radars and lighting battery all communicated different informations and the communication was very poor. In what is still confused today, the 2 hurricanes could not be identified and were mistaken for German Bf-109s before being shot down, which killed Officer Hutlon-Harrop. This incident which remained secret for decades was ironically called the Battle of Barking Creek, a location between the bases of North Weald and Hornchurch. Hutlon-Harrop was the 1st victim of the RAF and also ... the 1st killed by a Spitfire. 《 The Historians Alliance》 @stosstruppen1918 @_the_great_war @world_war_pics1914.45 @ww1photos_info @historicalmemesandstuff @world_at_war_33 @secretsofhistory1789 @panzers_colorized @ww1.facts @papabismarck @ww2documents @in.stahlgewittern @ww1.metaldetecting - @ww2_forgotten_battles on Instagram

- In Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) Jack Sparrow’s pistol was the only real gun in the movie. Johnny Depp used a set of two flintlock pistols that were made in 1765. However, they were only used in scenes where they needed to be fired. Otherwise, he used replicas.
