One year ago, the week before Thanksgiving, I had my explant surgery. Thanksgiving morning was the first time since surgery that my husband was able to bath me. I have a weak stomach and told myself I wasn’t going to look when he removed the bandages. I remember him saying as he slowly unwrapped me “they are absolutely beautiful, you have to look”. I caught a small glimpse in the mirror and it was just enough to bring me to tears! I remember sitting in the tub sobbing (the ugly cry) while he washed me... He told me that I needed to “buck up” and reminded me that I was incredibly blessed and had so much to be thankful for! Our family was healthy, we had a roof over our head and each other. I know how fortunate I am but sometimes we lose sight. Whatever trials we are going through, there is always someone who has it worse. The last year has been extremely tough for me (in more ways than one) but I’m still so very thankful for each and every day!! Been riding a rough wave recently. My courageous wife Laural says it beautifully below. I love you Lollie, I’m so proud of you ❤️ #Repost @laural.furze ・・・ It’s difficult to open up and post the hard stuff on social media but it doesn’t feel right only posting the good. We all go through hard times and for Mark and I this week’s been incredibly sad. @themarkfurze and I were going to make a big announcement this week.. We’re having a baby! I’m 10 weeks pregnant and we’ve been so excited, daydreaming about what our little human would be like, getting ready for this new chapter. But, at my ultrasound we found out that the pregnancy isn’t viable and I’ve had what’s called a missed miscarriage where my body still thinks it’s pregnant but the fetus hasn’t progressed. I’m currently at the hospital waiting to have a D&C procedure to help my body along with the process. Pregnancy loss isnt talked about much, but it’s actually really common and happens to 1 in 4 pregnancies. I have peace in knowing that it’s likely because the embryo wasn’t 100% healthy and not compatible with life. But still it’s been an incredibly difficult few days to process everything. I cry a lot and have eaten ice cream everyday this week.. The tears are slowly stopping, but I think I’ll keep eating ice cream for at least another week!! I wanted to share this because it doesn’t feel right just pretending this huge life event hasn’t happened to us. I want to respect it and be open about it. Women should feel more comfortable to talk about pregnancy loss and that’s another reason I felt compelled to share my story. I’m sure there’s a few of you reading this that have been through the same thing 💓 It sucks, but it’s nothing to feel ashamed about. I’ve had a wonderful support network around me and I couldn’t imagine doing this alone. Mark has been so incredibly wonderful to me this week, I feel so grateful to have a man like him by my side. We will get through this and we are doing our best to stay positive. Three years ago, almost to the day, we threw a big grand opening party for our very first brick and mortar. We were the very first shop jn austin dedicated to honey and beekeeping. The party was the grandest, y’all. Delicious food, kegs, face painting, and yes. Free bee tattoos. Real bee tattoos. 27 of y’all signed up immediately for a free tattoo, so many that we had to stop the list cause we knew we wouldn’t get to all of y’all. The faces and jaw dropping of everyone in the room when they saw that this tall, very handsome fella covered in tattoos was about to ink anyone that wanted one was so priceless. (The kids! 😂 the kids were so in awe, and we had two ladies over 60 get their very first tattoo they day. And my mom was one of em!!.). When I started this business I knew we would be different from the rest. From the fact that I’m a young (ish) woman, to how we keep our bees, how and what we sell, to the transparency and openness we have with y’all, to the demographics of folks we reach, and the sheer fact that we actually are the beekeepers that produce the honey instead of just buying it: we aren’t your daddy’s bee company. And this single act showed everyone there—hey these ladies are super fun, and are gonna do it their way. And I was so overjoyed to see how you guys loved it. And How ironic that this week, 3 years later, we open our doors on our 2.0. We aren’t ready for a big party quite yet, cause well..we aren’t totally done out here and , you know..COVID complicates things. But we will have a grand opening even grander than the first some day.
