History Lesson 🖤❤️💚 • Bill “Jamma” Butler, also known as The Godfather of Roller Disco • It goes without saying he IS one of the greatest skaters to hit the scene • Bill Butler was born Dec. 4 1933 in Detroit, Mi. In his early years, Bill wanted to be a running back but his Mother just wasn’t having it. Butler ended up skating instead. His first rink was Arcadia in Detroit. After walking in and seeing a skater he called “Archie” do a move, he quickly realized he wanted to be known as one of the best • After being stationed in Brooklyn, circa 1957, Bill Butler rolled into Empire roller rink • “When I got there it was all organ music. Nothing related to black people and how we danced. So I brought my own music with me, and asked Mr. Abrami if he would play a number I had, “Night Train” by Count Basie,” he stated in an article by Boy’s Own Productions • From that moment forward Bill Butler helped shape roller history. Not only was he responsible for the introduction of Jazz and R&B to the rinks, he also invented and introduced the technique and style of “jammin” still popular today. By the time Disco hit in the 70s Bill Butler was already a coveted rink legend • His skate choreography has been seen in iconic commercials and films like Roll Bounce. I bet you didnt know Bill Butler was the creative director for ALL of the skating in the film; you can even find videos of him teaching Lil Bow Wow how to skate. Untitled (Keith). 1984. I cant believe I made this work 36 years ago. Looking back in time is a sobering exercise. I dont think any of the MFA students I am currently teaching were even born then. I did this work when I was myself an MFA student. I was totally fascinated by the processes and procedures of conceptual art. The times were post Pictures generation (Douglas Crimp) and post New Image Painting at the Whitney Museum. Documenta 7 was immensely capturing of the split between a market pleasing, rough hewn Neo-Expressionism of exaggerated subjectivity and a hybrid style of photographic image-centered Neo-Conceptualism. Wedged between this split were so called graffiti artists including the great Keith Haring. The portrait of my Keith was taken by a studio photographer, the kind that every Sears store in America once had. I took a portrait of Boon Hui, the photographer, in a later work that is posted here on my IG feed. The feintly Frank Stella like left half was or is still the WNBC logo for channel 4 New York City. I was interested in the relationship of individual identity to the social economy. Keith is subsumed within the codes of the factory system of studio portraiture while ironically the abstract Channel 4 is more individuated, and perhaps more visually interesting. I made only three works in this series and they are all undersized. I was constrained by my own social economy at the time. I saved up well over a year working in part time jobs just to pay for production. Even then it wasnt enough to cover the expenses. Ultimately, that did not matter. I had em’ fanned out perfectly. • A few years ago, I purchased the entire year of the 87’ @archdigest spread. I had this curiosity about how different Black Homes were then, in comparison to the ones published in AD. G O U D – M A S T E R ! Yes, Annelies heeft haar goud-master behaald! In het Blue Collar hotel in Eindhoven kwam vandaag een internationale jury bijeen om de kwalificaties van Master Photographers Network (MPN) te beoordelen. De jury bestond uit Janusz szpakowski, Hans Einspanier en Aad Sommeling. Annelies heeft een panel getoond van 20 mannen-portretten en behaalde daarmee haar Goud-Master titel. Dit houdt in dat ze een serie foto’s van uitmuntende kwaliteit heeft gecreëerd, met haar eigen “handtekening”. Hiermee is Annelies één van de 10 Nederlandse fotografen die deze titel behaald hebben én mogen uitdragen. Naast Annelies behaalden ook Marjolijn Lamme en Fred van Soest deze titel. Gefeliciteerd! De laatste keer dat deze titel in Nederland behaald werd, was 10 jaar geleden, en wel door Ad. When I was 7, my dad enrolled my brother and I into Taekwon-do. I cried on the first day because I didnt want to do this new thing. It was scary to me as a kid. Now, I am a 4th degree black belt at Red Tiger Taekwon-do in Philadelphia. In 2009, I competed at my 2nd ITF World Championships in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Here is a little story. During my first sparring match, I sprained my ankle. Despite my coach and my teammates telling me to forfeit, I had to finish the fight. I just couldnt give up when I had come so far. I finished the round but still ended up losing the match. I had trained so hard and in one moment, all my opportunities just slipped away. After taking care of my ankle overnight, I was able to get the okay from my coach and medics to compete in my remaining divisions the next day. And I was able to bring home 2 bronze medals. It was after this experience that I vowed to go 100% in all opportunities in my life. Like that quote: You miss 100 percent of the shots you dont take. And funny enough, I did things I never imagined doing. I did pageants for a bit. I won 3rd runner up for the National American Miss Pennsylvania in 2010 and 1st runner up for Miss Vietnam New Jersey. I began modelling in college and was published in a few magazines. I finished college with a Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Business degree. I now own a digital marketing and production company/YouTube channel called Art School Dropouts making sketches and Martial Arts action comedy films. And I am a model and actress. Life can be quite funny. I started crying on my first day of Martial Arts out of fear of something new.
