Let’s talk about selfishness and entitlement. The late Anthony Demello once said that everything we do is for our own gain in some way. That there is truly no selfless act. Ever since I heard this I’ve been contemplating the meaning. And here are my thoughts on this. Everyone is selfish. Everyone can act entitled. Anyone can be an ass. Anyone can be insensitive. Victims can also be abusers. Anyone can be verbally or emotionally abusive. And, even the most giving person is doing what they do so they can feel good, needed, valued or important. What I believe makes a healthy love relationship is when both people recognize this truth and 100% own up to when they behave in ways that hurts the other. We’re not responsible for the healing and growth of the other, we are only responsible for our own side of the street. We have no responsibility in being the healer and helper for the other. We can support and be there for the other in loving ways, but not without being there for ourselves also. And the problem with those who have moderate to high narcissistic traits is that they have so many blind spots to how their behaviour impacts others. When you finally set some limits and boundaries and start putting yourself first, they’ll likely start to call you selfish. Only a truly selfish person will tell you setting limits and putting yourself first is selfish. I don’t believe in a healthy relationship we should be putting other before self. We must put the oxygen mask on ourselves first. Detachment from others reactions, feelings and moods is the only way to disentangle from this dynamic, and dealing with our own emotions, our own triggers, and setting boundaries without feeling bad or guilty. ~L - @awakeningwomensupport on Instagram
